Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What planet was the Le Verrier space station located near?

Answer: Neptune

The station was near Triton, the largest moon of Neptune. Triton is the seventh largest moon in the solar system. It is the only large moon in the solar system with a retrograde orbit, meaning it moves opposite the direction of Neptune. The space station was named after Urbain Le Verrier, the French mathematician who predicted the existence of Neptune.

Neptune is the fourth largest planet in the solar system, and is 47 times the size of Earth. It is the densest planet in the solar system. It was first observed by telescope in 1846 by German astronomer Johann Galle.

The episode was a huge departure from past "Doctor Who" episodes as it uses a "lost footage" approach similar to "The Blair Witch Project" (1999). The Doctor and Clara arrive on a space station (not that unusual) and meet a scientist conducting strange experiments with unforeseen and disastrous consequences (again not that unusual) - so it was mainly the format which was different.
2. What time period did the events in "Sleep No More" take place in?

Answer: 38th Century

According to the Doctor, they were in the 38th century. It appeared to be an era of peace and prosperity, with a slightly psychotic work ethic. People were so driven to be productive that even sleep was viewed as a luxury.

For the Doctor in the 51st Century, watch "The Long Game". The Doctor visited the 16h century in "The Shakespeare Code". There are many episodes set in the 21st century, especially in London.
3. What was the name of the sleep machine invented by Gagan Rasmussen?

Answer: Morpheus

Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams. He is the son of Hypnos, the god of sleep. He is featured in the ancient Greek poem "Metamorposes" by Ovid. The narcotic morphine gets its name from Morpheus.

Somnus is the Roman god of sleep, and Hypnos is his Greek counterpart. Baku are Japanese demons that devour dreams.

Gagan Rasmussen was played by Reece Shearsmith. He was been working in television since 1999. Rasmussen got his first big break on "The League of Gentlemen" (1999-2002) where he worked with Mark Gatiss, the writer of "Sleep No More." Other notable work includes "Psychoville" (2009-11) and "Inside No. 9" (2014-15).
4. The sleep machine was able to concentrate one month's worth of sleep into what period of time, according to the message?

Answer: 5 minutes

According to the message, five minutes sleep were sufficient. People who used the machine were known as "Wide Awakes". The unfortunate side effect of the machine is that it turned users into monsters - but other than that...

Zina Badran was the woman who presented the Morpheus machine message. She appeared as Lucy in the BBC comedy series "The Wrong Door" in 2008. Badran also had appearances on "EastEnders" (2010), "Pramface" (2013) and "Doctors" (2010 and 2015).
5. What dream-related song appeared repeatedly in "Sleep No More"?

Answer: Mister Sandman

The Morpheus machine was playing "Mister Sandman" until the Doctor turned it off with his sonic sunglasses. The computer also used "Mister Sandman" as a keycode for entry into rooms, which was very frustrating for Chopra.

"Mister Sandman" was written by Pat Ballard in 1954. The song was a #1 hit for the Chordettes in October of 1954. Many other artists have recorded versions of the song since, including Chet Atkins, Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Linda McCartney, the Osmond Brothers and even Alvin and the Chipmunks.
6. In "Sleep No More", what were the Sandman monsters made from?

Answer: Skin cells

According to the Doctor, the Sandmen are made up of skin cells and mucus that accumulate around the eyes when people sleep. Apparently, the accelerated nature of sleep during inside the Morpheus machine changes the nature of the cells, making them join together and become a life form.

One of the best moments was when Clara called the monsters Sand Men, and the Doctor called her out on it. "I'm the Doctor, I get to name things."
7. What strategic disadvantage did the Doctor discover about the Sandman creatures?

Answer: They were blind

The Doctor discovered the Sandmen were blind, which made it possible to sneak past them if one were quiet enough. The reason they were blind was disturbing: their cells were spying on the space station, somehow creating images of what was happening in a place that had no cameras.

There never really was a plausible explanation for why much of what was happening (including the video images) was actually happening; a fact that even the Doctor acknowledged near the end of "Sleep No More."
8. According to the Doctor, the phrase "Sleep No More" comes from what Shakespeare play?

Answer: MacBeth

It comes from "MacBeth, Act 2, Scene 2". "MacBeth" was written between 1599 and 1606, and was probably first performed in 1611. Based on Scottish history, "MacBeth" remains one of the greatest reflections on the corrupting influence of ambition and power.

Peter Capaldi actually quoted MacBeth's speech "Methought I heard a voice cry, "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep" - the innocent sleep, Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care, The death of each day's life, sore labor's bath, Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course, Chief nourisher in life's feast."

Hamlet does actually use the phrase "To sleep - no more" ("Act 3, scene 1") in the "To be or not to be" soliloquy, but the Doctor quotes "MacBeth".
9. What is the correct order for how the rescue team died in "Sleep No More"?

Answer: Deep Ando, 474, Chopra

Deep Ando was the first to die, shortly after his argument about singing with the computer. 474, the grunt, was second to die, right after saving Chopra's life. Chopra was the last of the rescue team to die. Commander Nagata survived by escaping with the Doctor and Clara on the TARDIS.

Deep Ando was played by Paul Courtenay Hyu. He was been acting primarily in television since 1999, and his voice can be heard in several video games.

474 was played by Bethany Black, the first transgender actor to appear on "Doctor Who". She was been working as a stand-up comedian since 2005, but is fairly new to acting.

Neet Mohan played Chopra. Mohan played a police officer in the TV series "Line of Duty" (2012) and "No Offence" (2015).

Elaine Tan was Commander Nagata. She began acting in 1988, and has been working regularly since 2000. While most of her work has been in British television, she has worked in the US on shows such as "Boston Legal" (2008), "Entourage" (2011) and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2011 and 2012).
10. According to the opening credits, who wrote "Sleep No More"?

Answer: Credits? What opening credits?

Correct, there were no opening credits. The show opened with Gagan Rasmussen (Reece Shearsmith) and continued without any credits until the end of the episode. This is the first time in the history of the show there were no opening titles.

For the record, the show was written by Mark Gatiss, one of Britain's most popular science fiction and horror authors. This is his eight episode of "Doctor Who" - his past episodes include "The Unquiet Dead" (2005), "Victory of the Daleks" (2010), "The Crimson Horror" (2013) and "Robot of Sherwood" (2014). Gatiss also acted on the show as Professor Lazarus in "The Lazarus Experiment" (2007).

Justin Molotnikov directed "Sleep No More" as well as "Face the Raven". He was been working in television since 1999; appropriately enough, he got his start on a show called "My Parents are Aliens" (1999). Since then, he has worked on "Shoebox Zoo" (2004-05), "Merlin" (2011-12) and "Atlantis" (2013-15).

Mark McQuoid was the guy behind the camera this episode. He has been working as a camera operator since 1999. He first worked on "Doctor Who" with "The Day of the Doctor" (2013) and joined the crew full time during "Mummy on the Orient Express" (2014). For "Sleep No More" McQuoid actually dressed up as the characters, spoke lines and carried a gun while filming to give the scenes an extra sense of reality,
