Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The Zygon Invasion" opened with scenes from what previous episode of "Doctor Who"?

Answer: The Day of the Doctor

As the episode notes, there were three Doctors, two Osgood and one peace treaty in "The Day of the Doctor." One of subplots of the fiftieth anniversary show featured an attempt by the Zygons to invade the Earth by infiltrating UNIT. The Tenth and Eleventh Doctors resolved the crisis by confusing everybody's identities. "The Day of the Doctor" aired on the fiftieth anniversary of "Doctor Who" - November 23, 2013.

"Terror of the Zygons" (1975) was the Fourth Doctor adventure which introduced the alien race. It involved the Zygons using the Loch Ness Monster to take over the world by attacking an energy conference.

In "The Power of Three" (2012), the Zygons got a brief mention as being at the Savoy Hotel during Rory and Amy's wedding anniversary.

"Kill The Moon" (2014) has nothing to do with Zygons, but was written by the same author as "The Zygon Invasion".
2. What song was the Doctor playing on the guitar when he got the emergency message from Osgood?

Answer: Amazing Grace

The Doctor was playing "Amazing Grace", a hymn written by former slave captain John Newton by 1779. It remains one of the most popular folk hymns ever written, and has been recorded thousands of times. The tune is actually called "New Britain" and has been used with the lyrics of "Amazing Grace" since 1835.

That really was Peter Capaldi playing the guitar. He was a musician before he got into acting, working in a band with Craig Ferguson. We first saw the Doctor playing the guitar in the "The Magician's Apprentice" and Capaldi's playing has been worked into several episodes since.
3. What form did the two members of the Zygon High Command who met with the Doctor take?

Answer: Little girls

The Doctor met the Zygon leaders at Brockwell Park in London. The Doctor is speaking with two blonde girls, and at first you start to question his sanity, thinking he may be harassing children. It turns out the little girls are Zygons, who assure the Doctor that they have things under control. It turns out the high command girls do not have things under control, for they are captured by members of the rebel Zygon forces and are executed.

Brockwell Park is a 125 acre park located in the south of London, between Brixton and Tulse Hill. The area has been a public park since 1891.
4. Where were the Zygon headquarters that the Doctor and UNIT visited located in London?

Answer: A school

Drakeman Junior School in Dulwich, to be precise. For some strange reason, aliens in "Doctor Who" like to build bases near schools. The Doctor visits with Kate Stewart and discovers that the Zygon plot has world-wide implications, although the majority of the Zygons are still located in the UK.

Dulwich is on the south side of London, in the borough of Southwark. The history of the area goes back to 967 and the reign of King Edgar.
5. Where did Kate Stewart travel to in the United States to investigate the Zygons?

Answer: New Mexico

She traveled to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, which is a real place. It is the county seat of Sierra County, NM. In 2012, it had a population of 6411. The town was first settled in 1912, right around the time New Mexico became a state. It was named Hot Springs in 1916, after its most prominent geographic feature; the town changed its name in 1950, to promote the game show hosted by Ralph Edwards.

Stewart visits the town, only to discover it deserted, with a paranoid sheriff the only resident. They discover dumpsters filled with the charred remains of people killed by the Zygons. At the end of the episode, it turns out the sheriff was a Zygon as well - Kate Stewart appears to be dead (then again, she's pretty tough to kill, as we saw in "Death in Heaven" (2014).
6. The Americans in the town Kate visited greeted the new British immigrants with open arms.

Answer: False

More like armed resistance. The billboard in the Sheriff's office had the caption Brit Murders, and the sheriff talked about how the residents had killed many of the new immigrants. This is one of the more political episodes of the Capaldi era, with commentary on the issue of immigration both in the UK and the United States.

And while hostility to immigration has been common in the southwestern United States (especially Arizona), it has generally been towards Hispanic immigrants rather than Europeans.
7. What is the name of the fictional country that the Doctor traveled to with UNIT?

Answer: Turmezistan

Based on the stan part of the name, presumably Turmezistan is located somewhere in Central Asia. The Doctor traveled there to rescue Osgood, who had been kidnaped by the Zygons.

The Doctor traveled to Turmezistan as the President of the World, with a group of troops from UNIT. The commander, Colonel Walsh, was played by Rebecca Front, who spent much of season four of "The Thick of It" working with Peter Capaldi. The Turmezistan scenes were some of the tensest in the whole episode, as UNIT solders were faced with having to shoot Zygons posing as their family members.

Turkmenistan is a real country in Central Asia, most notable for having one of the craziest world leaders in recent memory, Saparmurat Niyazov. Tazbekistan is the fictional country from the BBC comedy series "The Ambassadors" (2013). Tomania is the fictional nation from the Chaplin masterpiece "The Great Dictator" (1940).
8. What type of clothing was Osgood wearing as a tribute to a former Doctor when the Twelfth Doctor rescued her?

Answer: Question mark collar

Osgood was wearing a question mark collar for most of this episode, which was a hallmark of the Fifth Doctor. Osgood points out to the Doctor that he used to wear question marks. The Doctor says he still does, only on his underwear. "Makes you wonder what the question is," she comments.

Ingrid Oliver returns as Osgood, who we last saw being killed by Missy in "Death in Heaven." There were two Osgoods, one Human, one Zygon, and it was unclear which one was killed - actually, it was still unclear as Osgood refused to discuss the matter. Osgood first appeared in "The Day of the Doctor" wearing the Fourth Doctor's scarf, and dressed as both the Tenth and Eleventh Doctor in "Death in Heaven".

When she is not playing Osgood, Ingrid Oliver is best known as a comedian. She and comedy partner Lorna Watson have been performing since 2005. She and Watson had a widely panned sketch comedy show on the BBC in 2013. Oliver also appeared as Mimi Throckmorton in the fashion dramedy "Material Girl" (2010).
9. What was the name of the Zygon who was impersonating Clara?

Answer: Bonnie

Monster spoiler: Clara was not Clara for most of the episode, but was actually a Zygon. The truth is not revealed until about three-fourths of the way into "The Zygon Invasion". The Zygons are storing humans in the sewers beneath London, and Clara Oswald turns out to be one of their captives.
10. Who wrote the series nine episode "The Zygon Invasion"?

Answer: Peter Harness

Peter Harness wrote the two-parter "The Zygon Invasion" and "The Zygon Inversion" for series nine. He also wrote "Kill the Moon" for series eight. Harness was one of the co-writers for the first season of "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell."

Nettheim directed both "Zygon Invasion" and "Zygon Inversion" This is his first work on "Doctor Who" although he has been working as a director in television since 2001. Nettheim, a native of Sydney, has done most of his work on Australian television.

Aidan Cook is one of the men behind the monsters on Doctor Who. He played in a Zygon in both "Zygon Invasion" and "The Day of the Doctor" (2013) as well as a Cyberman in "Nightmare in Silver" (2013) and "The Time of the Doctor" (2013). When he is not in a monster costume, Cook does voice-over work on the animated series "Horrid Harry".

Nicholas Briggs is the most popular voice actor on "Doctor Who". He has been voicing the Daleks on the show since "Dalek" in 2005. He also frequently voices the Cybermen. Briggs did the voice of the Zygons in "The Zygon Invasion".
