Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the planet where the Doctor meets River at the start of "The Husbands of River Song"?

Answer: Mendorax Dellora

The opening scene establishes the planet as Mendorax Dellora, and it is Christmas in 5343 AD. River has crashed a spaceship after marrying a psychopathic space despot nicknamed "The Butcher of Bone Meadows."

Alfava Metraxis, the seventh planet of the Dundra System, is where the Byzantium crashed and River and the Doctor fought the Weeping Angels. Trenzalore featured heavily in "The Name of the Doctor" (2013) and "The Time of the Doctor" (2013) and is the planet where the Doctor is buried.

The Doctor and River had a picnic at Asgard, just one of the adventures mentioned by Flemming.
2. What is the name of the king who is fighting the Doctor and River for most of the episode?

Answer: Hydroflax

Hydroflax was the king. He was known as a ruthless conqueror, who would eat his conquered enemies dead or alive. The king was a cyborg, who could disconnect his head from his body, which had an autonomous computer system. River found that sexy - the Doctor did not.

Hydrox is a brand of creme-filled cookie, first marketed in 1908. They predate Oreo cookies by four years.

Hydrofrac, the short name for hydraulic fracturing, is a controversial technique used in petroleum drilling. It has been linked with seismic instability, including earthquakes.

Hydroloths are a type of demon in "Dungeons and Dragons", specifically during the Second Version era (1991-1994).
3. What piece of archeology equipment has River converted into a sonic tool?

Answer: trowel

River has a sonic trowel, which the Doctor finds quite silly. The trowel is the iconic tool used by archeologists, used for digging around in small spaces where delicate work is required.
4. What is the name of the diamond River is attempting to steal in "The Husbands of River Song"?

Answer: Halassi Androvar

The diamond has become lodged in the skull of King Hydroflax (shades of the plot of the Bond film "Die Another Day"). River needs to remove the king's head to get the diamond. Conveniently, the king is able to swap out his head because he is a cyborg. For the record, a talking head in a bag is very funny.

After lots of running and a really cool explosion, River gets her hands on the diamond. Later, the Doctor gives it to a rescue worker so he can build a restaurant near a major tourist attraction.

A white point star comes from Gallifrey. One can be seen in "The End of Time, Part One" when the Time Lords attempt to return to the galaxy. The Eye of Ashaya is the world's largest diamond, and featured in the 2013 comic book of the same name.

The Tenth Doctor used the Koh-I-Noor to rescue Queen Victoria from a werewolf during "Tooth and Claw" (2006). When discovered it was 793 carats, but has been repeatedly cut over the years. It is now 105.6 carats and is in the crown of Elizabeth II.
5. What type of alcohol does River offer the Doctor once they are aboard the TARDIS?

Answer: Aldbaran Brandy

River steals booze from the Doctor's liquor cabinet - presumably not the first time she has done so.

Romulan Ale is from "Star Trek". A Panagalactic Gargleblaster is from "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". The Tenth Doctor claimed to have invented the banana daiquri (in the 18th century no less) in "The Girl in the Fireplace" (2006).
6. What was the code name River and Ramon used for the Doctor?

Answer: damsel

Ramon had photographs of all twelve incarnations of the Doctor prior to Peter Capaldi, and reported that none of them were on the planet. Damsel is short for "damsel in distress," presumably referring to the fact that the Doctor frequently had to be rescued by his companions.

Ramon was another one of River's husbands. He was played by Phillip Rhys, who has been acting since 1997. Rhys is probably best known to American TV viewers as Reza Naiyeer on "24" (2002-2003) and Jude Sawyer on "Nip/Tuck" (2003-2005).
7. How old did River claim to be when she was on the spaceship?

Answer: 200

River said "Looking good for 200" and claimed that she had augmented her life span. Her diary was almost full, which worried River because the Doctor (Matt Smith) would have known how much space she needed.

While a 200 year life span would give River room for plenty of adventures, none of them were with the Twelfth Doctor, because she did not recognize him when they met.
8. What was the name of the buyer of the diamond?

Answer: Scratch

Scratch was an agent for the Shoal of Winter Harmony. River had no interest in learning his name or in whom he represented, only in his money. Unfortunately for the Doctor and River, the Shoal of Winter Harmony was a cult group supporting Hydrofax.

Scratch offered River 100 billion credits for the diamond. Based on the exchange rate the Doctor cited in "Voyage of the Damned" (another Christmas episode with a crashing spaceship), that would be worth 2 billion pounds (roughly 3 billion US dollars). A very valuable diamond indeed..

Screech is "Saved by the Bell" and "Stitch" is a Disney alien. Stretch is a common nickname for people who are tall.
9. Which of these adventures featuring the Doctor and River is NOT among the things mentioned by Flemming when he is reading River's diary?

Answer: Fighting the Great Intelligence on Trenzalore

River did appear to the Doctor when he was battling the Great Intelligence, but it was established that River had died by the time those events took place. ("The Name of the Doctor" (2013)).

In "The Pandorica Opens," the Doctor's enemies place him in a super prison to attempt to prevent the destruction of the universe when the TARDIS explodes. The crash of the Byzantium sees the Doctor and River fighting the Weeping Angels; it was the first time Amy met River (at least from Amy's point of view). And Flemming mentions that River had just recently been in Manhattan, where she had once again fought the Weeping Angels with the Doctor -- this time as Melody Malone.
10. What was River's escape plan from the spaceship Harmony and Redemption in "The Husbands of River Song"?

Answer: Meteor Shower

River, being from the future, conveniently knew that a meteor shower would hit the spaceship, destroying the floor and giving them a way out. River told the Doctor she read about it in what may be the greatest dine and dash guide of all time, a guide to restaurants which were destroyed by natural disasters.

River has often used a vortex manipulator to jump around time and space. A Callisto Pulse is a micro-electronic signaling device which can disable explosives. River used it to blackmail Dorium Maldovar in "The Pandorica Opens" (2010).

Flying out an airlock was how River escaped in "The Time of Angels" (2010). She also escaped by jumping off a skyscraper in "The Day of the Moon" (2011).
11. When the Doctor and River were fighting, what British celebrity did he claim River had married?

Answer: Stephen Fry

Stephen Fry is one of the great renaissance men of British entertainment. He has been an actor, comedian, journalist, author and director. He first gained fame in 1982, and has been working regularly since. Part of the joke is that Fry is one Britain's most prominent gay activists.

Fry and Hugh Laurie were a popular comedy team and are probably best known for their work together in "Jeeves and Wooster" which aired on ITV from 1990 to 1993. Laurie went on to become arrogant physician Gregory House in "House, MD" (2004-2012). Fry and Laurie worked with Emma Thompson in a comedy review when they were at university together

Standup comedian Alan Davies is the permanent panelist on Fry's quiz show "QI" (Quite Interesting). Fry announced he was leaving the show towards the end of 2015, after thirteen years as host.

Alan Rickman is one of the Britain's most distinguished actors, notable for playing villains. His roles include Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series, Hans Gruber in "Die Hard" and the Sheriff of Nottingham in "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves."

River had brought up the Doctor's marriages to Queen Elizabeth I (Tenth Doctor, "The Day of the Doctor" (2013)), Marilyn Monroe (Eleventh Doctor, "A Christmas Carol" (2010)) and Cleopatra (unknown, and possibly River posing as Cleopatra).
12. The last scenes of "The Husbands of River Song" take place on what planet?

Answer: Darillium

The very first time we meet River Song, shortly before she died, she mentioned that the Doctor had taken her to Darillium to see the singing towers. ("The Forest of the Dead"). It was an appointment the Doctor had been putting off for a long time. The singing towers are a pair of monoliths that are perfectly placed so that when the wind blows they create music.

The Library was where the Tenth Doctor first met River, and where River died. Stormcage is the prison planet where River was kept after she murdered the Doctor.
13. What does the Doctor give River for Christmas?

Answer: Sonic Screwdriver

The very sonic screwdriver she was using in "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead." The same screwdriver the Tenth Doctor uses to upload River into the computer database in the Library. Yes, that screwdriver. Steven Moffat takes the adventure of River Song full circle - and they lived happily ever after.

River got the vortex manipulator from Dorium Maldovar, supposedly stolen from Jack Harkness. She did get the diary from the Doctor, but in "Let's Kill Hitler" (2011). Where she got the lipstick from is anybody's guess.
14. How long does a night on Darillium last?

Answer: 24 years

The Doctor says the night lasts 24 years. When River says "I hate you", the Doctor responds "No, You don't." This has been one of the running gags of the Doctor and River's relationship.
15. Who directed "The Husbands of River Song"?

Answer: Douglas McKinnon

"Husbands of River Song" was Doug McKinnon's eighth episode directing "Doctor Who". He started with the two-parter "The Sontaran Stratagem/The Poison Sky" in 2008. His other episodes include "The Power of Three" (2012), "Listen" (2014) and "Flatline" (2014). Like Steven Moffat, McKinnon is a native of Scotland.

Nikki Wilson was the producer for the BBC on "Husbands of River Song." Wilson also worked on "Sleep No More" and "Face the Raven" during series nine.

Nonso Anozie, a British actor with Nigerian roots, did the voice of King Hydroflax. A trained Shakespearean actor who has worked in "King Lear" and "Othello", Anozie has been working in films and television since 2007. Liam Cook was the stunt man who had the tough job of walking around in the giant robot suit.
