Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where is the Doctor when we first see him in "Hell Bent"?

Answer: Nevada

The show opens with a red pick-up truck driving across a desert landscape. The screen states that it is "Nevada, USA". The Doctor enters a diner, where he finds Clara.

This is the second time we have seen the Doctor in the western United States. The first was in "The Impossible Astronaut" when he visited Lake Silencio in Utah. Interestingly enough, they used the same diner set in both episodes. And the Twelfth Doctor does bring up Amy and Rory. The Doctor mentions that the diner had moved, that it was "on the other side of the hill". That must be quite a hill, moving from Utah to Nevada.

If you would like to visit the diner (with hopes of finding a TARDIS in the kitchen), go to Eddies Diner, which is on Mermaid Quay (along the waterfront) in Cardiff, Wales.
2. What type of uniform is Clara wearing when we first see her in "Hell Bent"?

Answer: Waitress

Clara was a waitress. She listens to the Doctor's story of what happened on Gallifrey.

Clara was a nanny in "The Snowmen" and more or less a flight attendant in "Asylum of the Daleks". For a real flight attendant, see Tegan Jovanka, companion of the Fifth Doctor. Clara did wear a spacesuit in several episodes.
3. What planet was the Sisterhood from?

Answer: Karn

The Sisterhood of Karn was first seen in the Fourth Doctor adventure "The Brain of Morbius". The Doctor helped save their sacred flame, and they assisted him in defeating a crazed "Robot Monster"-like Time Lord.

The Sisterhood were also seen in "The Night of the Doctor" (2013) where they helped the Eighth Doctor regenerate into the War Doctor, and earlier in series nine during "The Magician's Apprentice".

Clare Higgins played Ohila, the leader of the Sisterhood. Higgins is a three-time winner of the Olivier Award for Best Actress, Britain's equivalent of the Tony Award.

Korn is an American metal band from Bakersfield, California. Kern is the county in California where Bakersfield is located, or a surname. Kirn is an island in Scotland, as well as a surname.
4. What was the name of Lord President that the Doctor banished from Gallifrey during the events of "Hell Bent"?

Answer: Rassilon

Rassilon is part of the mythology of "Doctor Who", dating back to the 1970s. He was first seen on screen in "The Five Doctors" (1983). He is responsible for much of the technology that makes time travel possible, and established much of the infrastructure of Time Lord culture.

Rassilon last made an appearance in "The End of Time" (2009), played by Timothy Dalton. This time around, he was played by Donald Sumpter. Interestingly enough, one of Sumpter's first jobs in television was in the Second Doctor adventure "The Wheel in Space" (1968). Sumpter also worked with Jon Pertwee in "The Sea Devils" (1972).
Sumpter has appeared in a wide range of both films and television shows during his long career.
5. What form did the General take after he regenerated?

Answer: Black woman

The General was nominally on the Doctor's side once the Doctor had deposed Rassilon and become Lord President. But he stood in the way of the Doctor rescuing Clara, so the Doctor had to shoot him.

The Doctor brushed off shooting the General, saying "This is Gallifrey. Here death is like a case of man flu." For non-British fans, "Man Flu" is a UK term for overemphasizing how sick you are in order to gain sympathy and attention.

The general regenerated as an African woman. The male General was played by Ken Bones and the female General was played by T'nia Miller. Ken Bones has been acting professionally since 1974. He appeared as The General in "The Day of the Doctor", the fiftieth anniversary special in 2013. T'Nia Miller began acting in 2007. Her work includes the film "Stud Life" (2012) and the TV shows "Cucumber" (2015) and "Banana" (2015).
6. There were a variety of enemies trapped in the Matrix. What old enemy of the Doctor did we NOT see in the Time Lord dungeon?

Answer: Sontaran

There was a rather pathetic Dalek that was begging to be killed, some Weeping Angels that were fortunately tied up, and a Cyberman. We didn't see a Sontaran, but that doesn't mean there might not be one who was foolish enough to attack the Matrix.

Daleks are the Doctor's oldest enemies, appearing in the second story of the show, "The Daleks" (1963). Cybermen first appeared in "The Tenth Planet" (1966). Weeping Angels are much newer, first appearing in "Blink" (2007).
7. According to the Time Lords, how long had the Doctor been trapped inside the confession dial?

Answer: 4.5 billion years

We knew for sure that he had been in the confession dial for at least 2 billion years, as seen in "Heaven Sent." The Time Lords upped even that, telling Clara that he has been trapped for 4.5 billion. For sake of comparison, 4.5 billion years ago, the Earth was pretty much a pile of rocks floating around in space, as seen in "The Runaway Bride".
8. The TARDIS the Doctor stole looks very much like the TARDIS of which previous Doctor?

Answer: First Doctor (William Hartnell)

The TARDIS had the round circles and central panel seen in the early years of the show, when William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were the Doctor. The Twelfth Doctor described the look as "classic".
9. In "Hell Bent", who does the Doctor meet up with at the end of the universe?

Answer: Ashildr (Me)

The Doctor goes all the way to "five minutes before the end of the universe" to escape the Time Lords and save Clara. He finds Ashildr waiting in a comfy chair, waxing poetic about the death of stars. They have a deeply philosophical conversation about the implications of keeping Clara alive.

Ashildr was first introduced as a brave Viking girl in "The Girl Who Died". After 800 years, she had changed her name to Me and becoming deeply cynical in "The Woman Who Lived". Ashildr was revealed as the mayor of a street filled with alien refugees in "Face the Raven". And by "Hell Bent" she was very likely the last living being in the universe with powers over time and space rivaling the Time Lords.

Orson Pink, presumably a descendant of Danny, was a time traveler at the end of the universe in "Listen" (2014). Professor Yana (Derek Jacobi) was an incarnation of the Master at the end of universe in "Utopia" (2007).
10. What kind of fruit does the Doctor warn Clara about as he is losing consciousness?

Answer: Pears

The Doctor warned Clara about pears, stating they were "too squishy."

Bananas have appeared repeatedly through "Doctor Who"'s history, mentioned by the Second, Fourth, Sixth, Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. Both the Ninth and Tenth Doctors were fond of bananas.

Apples have also shown up repeatedly, linked to the Fourth, Sixth, Seventh, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. "Apple" was even used as part of the calendar system in "The End of the World" (2005).

Donna Noble unfavorably compared Nerys to a peach in "The End of Time" (2010).
11. The Doctor wipes all Clara's memories of their adventures together in order to protect her from the Time Lords.

Answer: False

Clara turns the tables on the Doctor. She used the sonic sunglasses to "reverse the polarity" and changes the neural link so that the Doctor's memories of her are erased. The Doctor gives a somewhat rambling, somewhat poignant speech to Clara before blacking out. When he awakens, he asks "Clara who"?

The Doctor has wiped the memories of past companions in order to protect them, most notably Donna Noble in "Journey's End" (2008).
12. What two adventures with Clara did the Doctor mention towards the end of "Hell Bent"?

Answer: "Cold War" and "Mummy on the Orient Express"

The Doctor mentions being on a Russian submarine, which was the plot of "Cold War" (2013) and the Mummy on the Orient Express (2014).

At this point, the Doctor has no memories of Clara's face or voice. You can tell Clara wants to tell him who she is, but she can't for the sake of the universe.
13. Who did "The Hybrid" that the Time Lord prophecies spoke of turn out to be?

Answer: The Doctor and Clara

It turns out the "hybrid", a melding of two warrior races, represented the combination of the Doctor and Clara. As Ashildr noted, they were brought together by Missy (the Master) who thrives on creating chaos. Ashildr warned that if they continued, they could destroy the time-space continuum.

Since Clara's death in Trap Street was a fixed point in time, the Doctor trying to reverse it could cause time to fracture - much like the story line in "The Wedding of River Song" (2011). Clara did indicate that she would return to Gallifrey and have the Time Lords return her to the moment of her death; but maybe not right away. Steven Moffat leaves the door wide open for Clara and Ashildr to appear at some point in the future (or past?), even if the Doctor doesn't know who she is.

Don't forget, River is a hybrid - part Human, part Time Lord. She did regenerate twice.
14. Complete the final message that Clara left for the Doctor: "Run You Clever Boy ________."

Answer: And be a doctor

This was heartbreaking for Clara fans, as her signature line, first said in "Asylum of the Daleks" (2012) was "Run you clever boy, and remember."

As the episode ends, the Doctor dons his magician's coat, gets a shiny new sonic screwdriver and closes the TARDIS doors with the snap of his fingers. He then takes off into the universe to save more people.
15. Who wrote the series nine finale "Hell Bent"?

Answer: Steven Moffat

Do you really think Steven Moffat would allow somebody else to write the series finale? Moffatt has been the show runner for "Doctor Who" since 2010, and has written all five of the series finales during his tenure. He has written more episodes of "Doctor Who" than anyone else in the history of the show.

Rachel Talalaly directed "Hell Bent" as well as "Heaven Sent." She also directed the series eight finale "Dark Water/Death in Heaven" (2014).

Nick Lambon was the script editor for "Hell Bent" as well as several other episodes during season nine.

Linda Broughton is credited as "The Woman". It is assumed that she is the Doctor's foster mother based on her reaction at seeing him. Broughton is a veteran character actress, appearing in films such as "Sliding Doors" (1998) and "Babel" (2006) as well as lots of British television.
