Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How much time did Rigsy have left when he called Clara?

Answer: 538 minutes

At the very start of "Face the Raven," Rigsy tells Clara that he has a tattoo on the back of his neck that is counting down. The Doctor declares that "very non-boring" and comes to see Rigsy. We see the tattoo change from 538 to 537.

Rigsy's memory of the previous day has vanished, and the number keeps counting down. The Doctor and Clara decide to solve the mystery in order to save Rigsy.

We first saw Rigsy in "Flatline", the series eight episode in which Clara and the Doctor fought two-dimensional beings called The Boneless. Joivan Wade plays Rigsy. He is fairly new to acting, getting his big break in "Big School" in 2012. Wade was also in "Youngers" (2013-14).
2. What was the name of Rigsy's daughter?

Answer: Lucy

In the time since the events in "Flatline", Rigsy had gotten married and has an infant daughter named Lucy. The Doctor initially thought about bringing the baby along, and then realized she would be a distraction.

Jenny is Rigsy's new wife. The Tenth Doctor encountered Rose Tyler as a baby in "Father's Day (2005), and the Eleventh Doctor saw Melody Pond (later River Song) as a baby in "A Good Man Goes to War" (2011).
3. What character from series nine reappears as the mayor of the sanctuary city in "Face the Raven"?

Answer: Ashildr

Maisie Williams returns as Ashildr, the immortal Viking girl that we saw in "The Girl Who Died" and "The Woman Who Lived." She is the mayor of a city that is invisible to humans, hidden on a secret street, and home to at least 27 different alien races (who are disguised as humans), at least 15 who are known for aggression.

Ashildr vanished from the Doctor's radar in the early 19th century. The mayor tells him she set up the sanctuary street around the time of the Battle of Waterloo (1815).
4. What was the name of the deadly force that kept the residents of the sanctuary city in line?

Answer: quantum shade

According to the Doctor, the quantum shade was one of the most feared death sentences in the universe, because it could track victims down anywhere in time and space, without any chance of escape.

The Quantum Shade was nominally under the control of Ashildr, and took the form of a raven which attacked and drained the life force of its victims.
5. What was the race of the two-faced woman that Rigsy was accused of murdering?

Answer: Janus

The Doctor identified her as a Janus, named after the Roman god with two faces. Female Janus had psychic abilities - one face could look into the past, and the other could see into the future. The name of the alleged victim was Anah.

Jacondans are a race from the Sixth Doctor adventure "The Twin Dilemma" (1984). The Malus is a psychic energy beast from the Fifth Doctor story "The Awakening" (1984). Kali is a multi-armed Hindu goddess known for destruction.
6. What author did Clara say was a great prankster?

Answer: Jane Austen

Jane Austen is a particular favorite of Clara, who teaches English when she is not racing around the universe. In "The Caretaker" (2014), Clara and The Doctor discuss "Pride and Prejudice" and in "The Magician's Apprentice" (2015) Clara called Austen "a great kisser."

Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved of British authors. Most of her work focused on the social mores of pre-Victorian England. Her novels include "Sense and Sensibility" (1811), "Pride and Prejudice" (1813), "Mansfield Park" (1814) and "Emma" (1815). Her work remains popular 200 years later, and has frequently been reworked for films and television.
7. According to Clara, why can't the Doctor play "Good Cop"?

Answer: His face

When the Doctor and Clara are investigating the murder of Anah, Clara suggests "good cop, bad cop" with her as "Good cop". When the Doctor asks "Why can't I be good cop?", Clara responds "We've discussed this, remember? Your face."

The Doctor himself has stated that he has a rather stern face, especially his eyebrows. "Look at these eyebrows. These are attack eyebrows! They could take off bottle caps! They're cross. They're crosser than the rest of my face. They're independently cross!"

His personality would be another factor. The flash cards we first saw in "Under the Lake" reappear, as the Doctor tries to find a nice way to tell Rigsy that the numbers are counting down to his death.
8. How many minutes were left when Rigsy transferred his tattoo to Clara?

Answer: 33 minutes

It was 33. They had 50 minutes left when they discovered the entrance to the sanctuary city, and it was 8 minutes when Clara revealed that she had taken Rigsy's tattoo.

42 minutes was the amount of time that Tenth Doctor had to save a space station in the Series Four episode "42" (2007).

When Rigsy called he had 538 minutes. The Doctor and Clara arrived a few minutes later, when he had 532 minutes. Their quest to find the hidden street took around 8 hours, as they arrived there with only 50 minutes left.
9. Mayor Me (Ashildr) is able to keep her promise and provide "absolute protection" to Clara.

Answer: False

While Ashildr is pretty amazing after 1200 years of living, there are certain things even she is incapable of doing. One of them is cheating the raven once it has been promised a soul.

Ashildr would have been able to save Rigsy, but once Clara took over the curse, the power to reverse the spell was no longer in her hands. After an amazing rant by the Doctor at Ashildr and an emotional farewell between Clara and the Doctor, the raven attacks Clara and she falls to the ground.

Clara's death marks the first seemingly permanent death of a companion since Adric died in "Earthshock" (1983). Clara herself has a habit of dying - as a Dalek in "Asylum of the Daleks", as a nanny in "The Snowmen" and ripped apart by time winds "In the Name of the Doctor." So who knows?

"Face the Raven" ends with the Doctor being teleported to places unknown and Rigsy decorating an abandoned TARDIS with flowers as a tribute to Clara.
10. Who wrote the series nine episode "Face the Raven"?

Answer: Sarah Dollard

Sarah Dollard, an Australian screenwriter, was behind "Face the Raven". She got her start on the Australian soap opera "Neighbours" before moving to England in 2008. Since then, Dollard has done a great deal of work on science fiction or fantasy series, including "Merlin" (2009), "Primeval" (2011) and "Being Human" (2013). Dollard also produced a web series called "Cara Fi" (2014) about a town of Welsh men seeking wives.

Justin Moltnikov directed "Face the Raven" and the previous episode "Sleep No More" for series nine. Moltnikov has been working in television since 2000. His credits include "Shoebox Zoo" (2004) and "Atlantis" (2013-2015). Moltnikov also worked on "Merlin" but not at the same time as Sarah Dollard.

Nikki Wilson is the BBC producer for this episode. She was the producer of quite a few series eight episodes, and worked on "Sleep No More" (2015). In 2011, she worked on the BBC medical drama "Casualty."

Letitia Wright played Anahson, the daughter of Anah. She had the same psychic abilities as her mother, and helped solve the mystery. Wright can be seen in the TV shows "Banana" (2015) and "Cucumber" (2015) and the film "Urban Hymn" (2015).
