In the beginning of this episode, the kids are watching an episode of "Krusty the Klown" and yelling back to Krusty through the TV. When Homer returns home, he decides to let the family watch the news to see how his night went and Bart is shocked to find that his hero robbed the Kwik-E-Mart. Patty and Selma are unsurprised that Homer called the the 'Gruesome Twosome' on the surveillance camera.

On a news segment called 'Krusty Gets Busted: The Day the Laughter Died', Kent Brockman chronicles Krusty's life from his first performances as a street mime to recent years. In 1986, Krusty had a heart attack promoting pork products on the air and required a triple bypass. Krusty now has a pacemaker as a result. Krusty also fights illiteracy on his show, according to Brockman.

Bart and Homer attend Krusty's trial and Homer ends up pointing out Krusty as the man he saw in the Kwik-E-Mart. Following the trial, Homer packs up all of Bart's Krusty memorabilia and souvenirs and tosses them into a burning pile downtown- an event organized by Reverend Lovejoy to combat Krusty's evil ways.

The fumes from the fire are described as toxic, but the fact that they are childrens' toys causes them to burn instantly and the town stays to view the fireball that is created.

His show is placed into the hands of Sideshow Bob, his trusty sidekick, who announces that although "Itchy and Scratchy" will still remain on the show, it will become more intellectual. Despite the fact that Krusty is found guilty, Bart has full faith that his idol didn't do it. He asks Lisa for help in this and they head to the Kwik-E-Mart to find hints to prove that Krusty didn't do it. First was the microwave; Krusty's pacemaker inhibited the use of the microwave.

Another clue was the video footage showing the criminal reading a magazine. Krusty couldn't read. The two decide to talk to Krusty's sidekick, Sideshow Bob, for more ideas.

In the end, Bart is called up to stage at the Sideshow Bob Show where Bart reveals what he already knows. When he realizes that Homer stepped on the criminal's feet at the Kwik-E-Mart, he remembers noting that Krusty had small feet. It turns out that Sideshow Bob's feet were long enough to be hurt when Homer stepped on them at the Kwik-E-Mart. Sideshow Bob admits to the crime he committed and Krusty congratulates and thanks Bart.
