Answer: Pancakes

In the beginning of this episode, Bart and Lisa prepare stacks of pancakes for Marge's birthday before she wakes up. They also take the opportunity to show each other their respective gifts. Bart plans to give Marge a large bottle of French perfume (which he got for $4), and Lisa shows off her exquisite and complex macaroni picture (which bears a striking resemblance to "Whistler's Mother").

Besides these places, Homer also passes the International House of Answering Machines. After the kids give Marge her breakfast in bed, Homer rushes off to the mall in order to buy Marge a gift. While he's out, Marge talks with her sisters over the phone, excited about what he could possibly buy. Patty and Selma remind Marge that Homer's gifts are often bought with himself in mind. One year he gave her a tackle box and a Connie Chung calendar.

Marge also talks to Patty and Selma about where they would like to hold Marge's birthday dinner, and they all decide on The Singing Sirloin, where the waiters sing during dinner. Homer is depressed by the idea that his sisters-in-law will be joining them for dinner, but remains confident that his present to Marge will be great in her eyes (though Patty and Selma would never share the same sentiments).

Homer ends up buying a bowling ball for Marge, and when he holds the present in front of her over the table, it destroys her birthday cake. Homer asks her what she thinks of the gift, but she says that she doesn't quite know what to think of it since she's never bowled in her life. To top it off, Homer's name is engraved into the ball.

He says that he could always use it if she doesn't like it. She later decides to use the ball to spite Homer.

When Marge goes to Barney's Bowl-O-Rama for the first time, she has to follow instructions given by an employee in order to understand what's required in bowling. When she attempts her first shot, she only hits one pin, and when she continues to try, Jacques notices her from the next lane. Jacques gives her his bowling ball and a few pointers and Marge is able to hit a strike.

After Marge sees instant results from Jacques' ideas, Marge asks if he'll give her lessons. Although she's surprised by the $25 fee he's charging, he assures her that it's good since he normally charges $40. Meanwhile, Homer and the kids adjust to having dinner alone, and on the first night they have pizza in the kitchen. Lisa assures Homer that it's quite easy to take care of them, but he says that he'll be okay.

Answer: Feed the dog

Homer is able to pull off all of the tasks on the list before Marge comes home, and although he had a good night spending time with the kids, he was asleep by the time Marge was ready for bed. Marge wakes Homer up to tell him that she had a good night of bowling and that she would be going the following night. Homer agrees to take care of the kids again.

The next night, Jacques presents Marge with a present, her own bowling glove. After their second evening of bowling lessons, Jacques drives Marge home from the Bowl-O-Rama. Jacques decides to ask Marge to have a meal with him away from the 'thunderous folly of clattering pins'.

He decides on brunch because it's not quite breakfast and it's not quite lunch, but it comes with a slice of cantaloupe at the end. The next day, Lisa notices that Marge is overcompensating, and that her marriage may be unhappy.

Answer: Helen Lovejoy

After sending the kids off to school, Marge has brunch with Jacques. Before they can order, Reverend Lovejoy's wife, Helen, spots her sitting with the bowling instructor and draws her own conclusions. Jacques pretends to be giving Marge a bowling lesson until Helen leaves and then decides to ask Marge if she'll go with him to his apartment at Fiesta Terrace. Marge faints, but when she comes around, she decides to say yes.

Answer: A hospital

As Marge begins to make her way to Fiesta Terrace, she continuously stops in front of locations that remind her of Homer (eg. a wedding, two people holding hands, etc.). She ultimately decides not to visit Jacques' apartment, and she heads to the Nuclear Power Plant where she surprises Homer. Homer goes on a ten minute break to be with Marge.
