In the beginning of the episode, Homer and Bart both look into the oven and attempt to take one of Lisa's cupcakes before she takes them to her teacher Mrs. Hoover. Bart calls Lisa a teacher's pet, but Homer tells Bart that it's never a bad thing to 'grease the wheels' and be on the teacher's good side. Homer nearly gets a bite out of a cupcake, but Lisa snatches it away at the last second.

She also has a cupcake for Otto.

When Lisa refuses to let Bart hold the box of cupcakes on the bus, he insults her and she comments that he'll never get a cupcake with that attitude towards her. He decides to make up for the cupcakes and calls her a beautiful human being with a generous nature and a great spirit of giving. When he closes his eyes for her, she gives him a cupcake that has fallen on the bus floor.

When the bus arrives at school, Lisa's cupcakes are stolen by a bully who's friends with Nelson Muntz. Bart begins to fight the kid when the cupcakes are destroyed, but Nelson intervenes and Bart accidentally punches him in the nose. When Principal Skinner arrives the school bell rings and Nelson vows to get Bart after school.

In the cafeteria, Bart is regarded as a hero by the other students for punching a bully.

At lunch, Bart is told that he has an appointment to fight Nelson near the flagpole at 3:15. The knowledge of his impending fate has Bart shaken during class and he daydreams about his future funeral. At the funeral, Principal Skinner even mentions that Bart required reconstructive surgery following the fight.

At the flagpole, Nelson ends up punching Bart to the ground and stuffing him in a garbage can that is rolled down a hill.

When he returns home, Bart crawls into the bathtub to cry and Homer walks in to see what's wrong. When he realizes that Bart is crying, Homer uses a blow dryer to dry the tears. Marge feels that Bart should go to Principal Skinner, but Homer and Bart both know that it breaks the Code of the Schoolyard through tattletaling. He decides to help Bart by teaching him how to fight dirty.

Homer suggests that Bart fight dirty by pulling off moves that the Simpson family has been using for years. When Bart runs into Nelson again he throws mud into his eyes and punches him in the stomach. The punch does nothing and the mud just gets Nelson angrier. Before getting the chance to punch Nelson in the family jewels, Bart is forced to take the garbage can home again. Lisa suggests to Bart that he talk to Grandpa Simpson for help.

Following Lisa's advice, Bart visits Grandpa Simpson at the old folks home where Abe is busy writing a letter about his disgust towards the way that old people are reflected as sex-hungry partiers on TV. Grandpa and Bart head to Herman's Military Antique store in order to form a battle plan to get Nelson to learn his lesson once and for all.

At Herman's, Grandpa and Bart write up a declaration of war in order to legally battle Nelson. Herman also suggests that Bart train an army in order to attack Nelson as a large group. Bart rounds up classmates and other school chums at the treehouse to tell them about the battle, but Bart is late for the meeting (because of another fight with Nelson). Bart promises victory and trains his soldiers.

While Nelson is at the video arcade on Elm Street, Bart, Lisa, Grandpa, and Herman plan the attack and the troops fill up the two hundred rounds of water balloons. They plan to attack him at the Kwik-E-Mart after he's shaken the quarters off of kids. Unfortunately, some of their artillery has 'Happy Birthday' written on it.

Bart and the troops tie up Nelson until they come to an agreement. Herman has the boys sign an agreement (although it clearly doesn't hold through the next seasons). In the end, everyone has cupcakes.
In an epilogue, Bart says that there are no good wars excluding World War II, the "Star Wars" trilogy, and the American Revolution. He also suggests that we check our local library for gory books on war.
