Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with a nice musical ode to Tokyo by the guitar strumming Captain Spaulding. Who plays Captain Spaulding in this, his first of three appearances on 'M*A*S*H'?

Answer: Loudon Wainwright

To be more precise, Loudon Wainwright III played Captain Calvin Spaulding. Wainwright's father was a longtime editor of 'Time Magazine'.
2. In Captain Spaulding's song about Tokyo, a tune that can be heard several times throughout the episode, what pair of Japanese things are mentioned in the lyrics?

Answer: Sake and sashimi

For those of you who do not know, sake is a kind of fermented rice wine, while sashimi is simply raw fish. 'Oh, Tokyo, they got sake and sashimi and clean sheets, oh come on, oh', are lyrics heard numerous times during this particular episode.
3. Happily on his way to Tokyo (or so he believes) is Hawkeye, who enjoys a manicure before he goes. Wearing a beautiful Asian-style dress, who carefully tends to Hawkeye's fingernails?

Answer: Klinger

Sorry, this is something of a rotten trick question, but then, who wears more dresses on 'M*A*S*H' than Maxwell Q. Klinger? Trapper is also being attended to, by the Bobbie Mitchell, who played Nurses Mason, Marshall, Murphy, Gilbert, Lyons, Albe, Baker and Gage in other episodes. That has to be a 'M*A*S*H' record.
4. While in Tokyo, Hawkeye and Trapper are requested to get a list of different items for the various personnel at the 4077th. What particular item is on the shopping list for Klinger?

Answer: Training bra

Father Mulcahy brings this shopping list, which otherwise includes normal items such as cameras and watches. When the good Father inquires about what exactly a training bra is, Hawkeye responds, 'It's just like an ordinary bra, but with two wheels in back.'
5. Henry also makes a special request of Trapper and Hawkeye while they are in Tokyo. What Japanese items does Henry want his two favorite doctors to pick up for him when they arrive at their destination?

Answer: Prints

Specifically, he wants them to get some old Japanese prints, probably of erotic paintings. He tells them to bring $34 dollars to a bookshop on the Ginza, where they are to pick up the prints under the name of Orville Carver.
6. Wounded arrive at the 4077th, delaying Hawkeye and Trapper's trip to Japan. In the operating room, they find themselves working on soldiers with relatively superficial wounds. Who is working on triage, creating this odd situation?

Answer: Frank

When Hawkeye confronts Frank about a severely wounded man he finds on the bus, Frank insists that this soldier does not take priority. Why? Because he's Chinese and American wounded come first. Specifically, Frank claims that the priority is: American wounded first, allied wounded second and enemy wounded last.
7. With the officers gathered in the mess tent, Henry arrives with a message. The Chinese have agreed to an exchange of wounded soldiers. Frank is adamant against this suggestion, pointing to 'Chinese treachery'. What is Frank's example of Chinese treachery?

Answer: The 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor

Little does Frank seem to realize, it was the Japanese who initiated the attack on Pearl Harbor. Frank also refers to the Chinese as the 'yellow hordes'. This prompts the following response from Hawkeye: 'Frank, if you say yellow hordes one more time I'm going to cut out your tongue and use it for a pen wiper.'
8. Hawkeye and Trapper agree to go on the prisoner exchange. Frank eventually also volunteers, thanks to some nudging from Hot Lips. On the trip, Frank brings a handgun he received from his father.

Answer: False

Actually, the gun is Margaret's, as is the idea for Frank to bring it. The gun has an inscription engraved on it: 'To my little shot from her big shot. Your loving husband, Lt. Col. Alvin F. Houlihan, Regular Army'. It was a gift from Margaret's father to her mother.
9. Besides Radar and the doctors, what other member of the 4077th volunteers for this dangerous mission into enemy territory?

Answer: Klinger

Belying any thoughts that he is a coward, Klinger volunteers to go along with the guys to pick up the American wounded that are in Chinese custody. Dressed in army fatigues, Klinger claims that if he can't get out through 'nuts-ery', he might as well get out of the army through bravery.
10. At the prisoner exchange, the doctors encounter a Chinese doctor who can speak very good English. What regular 'M*A*S*H' guest star plays Dr. Lin Tam here?

Answer: Mako

This marked the first of four appearances on 'M*A*S*H' for the Oscar-nominated Mako. Each time he would play a different role, and each time he was simply marvelous.
