It was certainly large enough with plenty of rooms and beds that were sorely needed. The big problem was that when Charlotte died, the bank confiscated the boarding house for the many debts she had. So basically they committed breaking and entering.

Feeling no luck in getting patients Michaela resorted to desperate measures. So she opted for Jake Slicker (played by Colm Meaney) to pull her tooth she claimed was painful. While he was prepping her for the tooth pull she noticed his hand wrapped with a rag and offered to help take care of it. After that patients slowly started to arrive.

When Loren's sister Olive returned, she took the children to her ranch for a visit. Meanwhile Michaela was trying to make dinner, which wasn't going well for someone who didn't know how to cook. Olive returned the children as this mess was being made with a picnic basket of food.

Jake didn't trust her skills as a woman doctor but he staggered into the makeshift clinic pale and sweating. He half collapsed onto a bed with Michaela giving him a cup of water. Michaela was arguing with Reverend Johnson about sending another advertisement (pronounced in the show as: "adver-tiz-ment") for a town doctor. Bryan came running saying a rattlesnake got his mother. After extracting a promise from Michaela to take care of her children, Charlotte started to slip away fast. Michaela was prepping medicine when the Reverend simply laid his hand on Michaela's hands.

It was an unspoken but understood: "There's nothing to be done."

After running out of quinine, Matthew went looking for Cloud Dancing, the Cheyenne medicine man. After chanting some Indian sayings and giving her some tea made from Indian medicinal plants, her fever finally broke.

After Brian ran away from home, Michaela took off on her own to find him. She was found by some Cheyenne Indians who took her to the camp where Sully happened to be. The Cheyenne Indians offered to help look for Brian along with Sully and Michaela. Michael and Sully had already found him with a broken leg. Cloud Dancing was taking a look at Brian's leg, but Michaela reassured him it was fine. That's when the army started to charge for the Indians. Michaela ran up the embankment and raised her hands up to stop them.

The Colonel told her, "The Indians broke the treaty by leaving the reservation with a number more than 20." Michaela: "That's my fault, sir. Please accept my apology."
