Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the end of the first leg of the race, teams hit the Pit Stop at Juyongguan, a spot at which Chinese landmark?

Answer: The Great Wall of China

Teams flew from Seattle, Washington (starting at the season three finish line, Gas Works Park) to Beijing, China in this first leg of the race and one team, in a surprise twist, was eliminated half-way through the leg at the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City.

At the end of the leg at the first actual Pit Stop, teams needed to ascend the Great Wall and step on the Pit Stop mat. Here, Vipul and Arti became the second team to be eliminated. Coincidentally, Juyongguan, also known as Juyong Pass, was visited in the final leg of the very first season of "The Amazing Race" and played host to a Detour task before teams were whisked off to Alaska.
2. In the race's second leg, teams completed a Detour task in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. This location is in what Asian nation?

Answer: Mongolia

Departing from Beijing, China in Leg 2, teams took a train to Outer Mongolia, specifically the Mongolian capital city of Ulan Bator. After experiencing a cultural event in this city, teams needed to drive themselves, in old Soviet Jeeps, to the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park.

Here, after driving through the mud and riding horses to their next clue box, teams completed a Detour task involving either the dismantling of a Berber tent or the handling of Mongolian creatures known as hyniks. This leg of the race ended at the Hotel Mongolia where Kellie and Jamie, unable to complete a flaming arrow Road Block, checked into the Pit Stop in last place.
3. Heading to Vietnam in Leg 3, teams needed to find the flying suit of which American prisoner at the 'Hanoi Hilton'?

Answer: John McCain

Flying from Mongolia to Hanoi, Vietnam in Leg 3, teams needed to wait outside the gates of Hỏa Lň Prison to begin the trip. Upon the site's opening in the morning, teams were handed their clue in front of John McCain's flying suit, a reminder of the U.S. Senator's five-year stay in this war prison. Surprisingly, it was none of the interesting tasks completed in the rural village of Phố Vác (just outside of Hanoi) that did eliminated team Duke and Lauren in; in fact, Tom and Terry received a thirty minute penalty. Duke and Lauren couldn't make up the time they lost from starting the leg with zero dollars-- they'd overspent in the previous two legs of the race.

The fourth leg of the race also took place in Vietnam.
4. Kuwait Towers was a landmark visited in Leg 6. Here, one member of each team needed to collect which of the following?

Answer: Puzzle pieces

After traveling to Chennai, India in Leg 5, teams made their way to the nation of Kuwait in their fifth leg beginning at the Kuwait Towers. Here, in a Road Block task, one member of each team had to climb up to the top of one of the towers to claim a bag of puzzle pieces, then use them to spell out their next destination, Souk Al-Gharabally in Kuwait City.

The Detour task for this leg of the race ended up bringing teams into the desert to complete a task involving camels before everyone checked in at the Al Sadiq Water Towers. Peter and Sarah were unable to complete all the tasks in this leg of the race and were told to head to the Pit Stop after being lost in the country for most of the day.
5. In Leg 7, teams pulled their clue from atop a sailboat named Isla Mauritia moored in Grand Baie, a spot in what country?

Answer: Mauritius

Leaving the Middle East in Leg 7, teams flew from Kuwait City, Kuwait out towards the Indian Ocean to find the small, island nation of Mauritius. Landing in Plaine Magnien, teams needed to locate the Isla Mauritia in Grand Baie and swim out to it to claim their next clue.

In addition to this, teams needed to complete a unique Detour in which they either searched a large island for a sailboat sail or through one of three large mounds of salt for a shaker containing sea salt (amongst several others containing pepper). Checking in at the Pit Stop at the Chateau Bel Ombre, David and Mary were spared from elimination (for a second time).
6. Stopping at Lac Anosy in Leg 8, teams encountered what new race mechanic for the very first time?

Answer: Intersection

Remaining in the Indian Ocean in Leg 8, teams flew southward to the unique island of Madagascar, specifically to the capital city of Antananarivo. Upon their arrival, teams needed to take taxis to the Black Angel, a statue in the center of Lac Anosy in the middle of the capital.

Here, teams encountered their first-ever Intersection and were forced to work together with another team until their clues said that they could split up. Tyler and James and Rob and Kimberly completed the Fast Forward together but still managed to be edged out of first place by Dustin and Kandice. David and Mary could not overcome their 'Marked For Elimination' status and ended their trip outside the Cathedral Andohalo.
7. When teams stopped off in Helsinki, Finland in the first half of Leg 9, they needed to do which of the following at the Olympic Stadium Tower?

Answer: Perform a face-first rappel

Going from the southeast corner of Africa to the reaches of Scandinavia, the final five teams headed into the reaches of Finland receiving a clue from their families (via video message) in a cafe in Helsinki, taking a train out to a Detour in the muddy fields of Ylöjärvi, and descending into a mine for a Road Block task in Lohja.

At the end of the leg, teams needed to go into the Helsinki Olympic Stadium Tower to find a clue, then perform a face-first rappel (also known as an angel dive) down to the bottom.

When they finished this task, they discovered that the leg was not over-- they would be continuing to Kiev, Ukraine for a whole new set of clues.
8. The tenth leg of the race was in Morocco. The Pit Stop was at a nomadic camp erected in what mountain range?

Answer: Atlas Mountains

Beginning the tenth leg as only four teams at Kiev's Great Patriotic War Museum, teams flew to Ouarzazate, Morocco. Visiting a local antiques shop, teams spent the night before embarking on a chariot race Road Block (and Yield) at the Atlas Film Studios, then driving through the desert completing Moroccan-themed tasks. All four teams finished a Detour option involving crushing olives.

The Pit Stop for this leg of the race, a non-elimination point at which Dustin and Kandice avoided being ousted, was a nondescript camp in the Atlas Mountains.

The next leg of the race took teams to Casablanca before returning to Europe.
9. How many teams visited Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain?

Answer: Three

After heading to Barcelona, Spain in the penultimate leg of the race, Dustin and Kandice couldn't pull back from being 'Marked For Elimination' (though they placed last regardless). In the twelfth and final leg of the race, only three teams remained.

They departed from the Pit Stop at Palau Nacional de Montjuicin the night and needed to visit the front of Sagrada Família in the middle of the night to get a clue sending them to the Eiffel Tower in France. In France, teams completed a skydive road Block in Bayeux before an art/fashion-themed Detour in the city of Paris.
10. Returning to the United States, teams ended their trip in New York. Their last clue was found at what New York City sculpture?

Answer: Alamo

Flying from Paris, France to New York City, New York in Leg 12, the final three teams needed to locate a clue box in the Daily News Building before receiving a photograph directing them on foot, through the city streets to the Alamo, also known as the Astor Place Cube, for their final bit of Route Info.

In the end, teams took taxis to the town of Garrison, New York where they raced to the finish line at St. Basil Academy. Here, Tyler and James won the million dollar prize. They were followed by Rob and Kimberly and Lyn and Karlyn, the first all-female team to make it to the final three.
