Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Abe Simpson's first wife
Answer: Mona
Abraham Jedediah Simpson, also known as Grampa, first made his appearance on a "Simpson" skit on "The Tracey Ullman Show" in 1988, where Matt Groening's iconic characters first appeared. He has been 83 for over thirty years. Abe is a World War II veteran and often goes on rambling tangents about the war and his past.
After two affairs (producing two illegitimate kids), Abe married Mona Penelope Olsen, and Homer was born on May 26, 1956. Abe lied to Homer, telling him that Mona had died. Mona has been voiced by several actresses, including Glenn Close.
2. Chief Wiggum
Answer: Sarah
Chief of Police Clancy Wiggum is known more for his donut consumption than his law enforcement. He is lazy, gluttonous, incompetent and couldn't catch a cold. Chief Wiggum married his wife Sarah and they had a son, Ralph (who is not "all there"). Hank Azaria voices Clancy with his excellent Edward G. Robinson impression. Sarah is voiced by Pamela Hayden. FYI, 'Wiggum' is Matt Groening's mother's maiden name.
3. Sideshow Bob
Answer: Selma
The murderous Robert Underdunk Terwilliger Jr., PhD., is better known as Sideshow Bob. He was Krusty the Clown's sidekick before turning to a life of crime (and trying to frame Krusty). Ever since Bart helped the police capture him, Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) has tried to kill Bart.
In the 1992 episode "Black Widower", Sideshow Bob marries Selma Bouvier in a plot for revenge. Selma, Marge's older sister, has been married six times, i.e., Terwilliger, Hutz, McClure, Discotheque, Simpson, D'Amico.
4. Reverend Lovejoy
Answer: Helen
Springfield's Protestant Reverend Timothy Lovejoy is married to the gossipy, 'holier-than-thou' Helen Schwatzbaum Lovejoy. Helen grew up in a rural area, which is where she met Timothy who was selling bibles at the time. She fell for him and his stories of the big city. When she spread a rumor about their relationship, Helen and Tim were forced to marry.
5. Dr. Hibbert
Answer: Bernice
We are familiar with the kindly, always cheerful Dr. Julius Hibbert, but did you know that Bernice, his wife, is a recovering alcoholic? She once claimed that she was too drunk to remember her marriage to Dr. Hibbert. The two are one of the longest married couples on the show, having produced five children. Bernice also has the same infectious laugh as her husband.
She is voiced by Tress MacNeill.
6. Ned Flanders' second wife
Answer: Edna
Poor neighborly Ned Flanders; his first wife, Maude, mother to his sons Rod and Todd, was killed by a T-shirt cannon at the Springfield Speedway. After a long period of questioning and grieving, Ned married fourth grade teacher Edna Krabappel. Edna was voiced by the wonderful Marcia Wallace. Sadly, Marcia died of pneumonia in October 2013, and her character died on the show, leaving Ned a two-time widower.
7. Sheldon Skinner
Answer: Agnes
We are all familiar with Seymour Skinner, (Armin Tamzarian), principal of Springfield Elementary School. We are also familiar with Seymour's nagging, controlling mother, Agnes. But what of Agnes' husband? Agnes was married to Sheldon Skinner who fought in the same World War II company as Abe Simpson, i.e., the Flying Hellfish, where he was the radio operator.
He survived the war, but died in 1979, in a parade float accident.
8. Apu Nahasapeemapetilon
Answer: Manjula
Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is the husband of Manjula, and the father of octuplets. They are from India, and their marriage had been arranged since Manjula was three years old. She is a good cook, very judgmental and has announced that Apu cannot die until their kids are out of college. Manjula is also a part-time friend of Marge's, as they both belong to the Midday Mommies club.
9. Clancy Bouvier
Answer: Jacqueline
Clarence 'Clancy' Bouvier was a French, chain-smoking, male flight attendant. Often called Grampa Bouvier, he was the husband of Jacqueline Ingrid Gurney Bouvier. Clancy and Jacqueline had three daughters, i.e., twins Patty and Selma, and youngest child Marge.
After Jacqueline was widowed, she moved into the Hal Roach Apartments, where she continues to reside. Before it turned gray, Jackie had blue hair and, like Marge, she is voiced by Julie Kavner.
10. Kirk Van Houten
Answer: Luann
Lastly, we have the on-again-off-again couple of Kirk and Luann Van Houten, parents of Bart's best friend, Milhouse. Luann Mussolini Van Houten has been married, divorced (over a game of Pictionary) and remarried to Kirk who also happens to be her cousin (which is permitted in Shelbyville where she grew up).
While Luann and Kirk were separated, apparently Luann 'got around', having slept with Dr. Hibbert and dating Apu, Disco Stu and Captain McCallister.
