Dr. Bashir gives Odo two weeks to live; Odo asks Kira to return to Damar's base, wanting to spare her from watching him die. Sisko offers the doctor his help, and Miles convinces Julian to tell him about Section 31's act of genocide. If Section 31 takes their bait, an announcement regarding the discovery of a cure, and sends an agent, Julian plans to use a Romulan memory scanner to search his mind for anything on the virus. Julian agrees with Sisko that this is a long shot, but it is Odo's only chance.

Julian meets Sloan with a phaser set on stun, but when he wakes, he commits suicide to ensure that the cure can't get to the Founders. Julian gives Sloan just an hour to live, but Miles' makeshift multitronic engrammatic interpreter lets them go on a bizarre trip into his mind. While wandering corridors like those of DS9, they meet a Sloan whose words are distorted when he tries to name the cure's components. At an odd farewell ceremony attended by his family, he is shot by another Sloan.

Answer: His book is incomplete

While Sisko and Ezri puzzle over the strange sight in the lab, Julian and Miles' surreal "adventure" turns deadly when they are shot, and Julian is too weak to get them out of Sloan's mind. Miles laments his failure to leave a message for Keiko, who already thinks her husband likes Julian more than her; Julian agrees with that assessment. Valiantly, they try one more door, and wake up in the lab. But when "A Tale of Two Cities" begins to repeat in the middle, Julian knows they are still in Sloan's mind, which couldn't fill in portions of the book Julian hadn't yet read. Little time remains to find the cure.

"These files, they exist only in the minds of a very select group of people, and I happen to be one of them. If you really want to destroy Section 31, it's now or never." -- Sloan

Julian and Miles return to the door they nearly opened before, and inside sits Sloan, surrounded by countless files that contain all the information Julian would need to destroy the ruthless Section 31. He is tempted by this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but Miles reminds him that Odo is counting on him, and if they linger too long and die, Odo dies too. They get out with the cure just in time, two minutes after Sloan dies. Julian injects Odo with the cure, and after a painful moment, Odo becomes his old self again.

Admiral Ross keeps his promise to get another ship for Ben after the Defiant's destruction. The Sao Paulo's shield generators can withstand the Breen weapon, but it still has big shoes to fill. Ross transfers its command codes to its new captain, and directs Ben's attention to a PADD authorizing him to change its name to Defiant. Bashir (who hates the carpet) goes to check out his new sickbay, O'Brien and Worf head to engineering, and Ezri leaves Ben to get acquainted with his new bridge.

"If you don't mind hiding in a basement, I guess I don't mind having you down here." -- Mila

Damar, Kira, and Garak risk going to Cardassia to meet with Legate Goris and Gul Revok, who have promised their soldiers to the rebellion. Instead, they beam into a cave where Jem'Hadar, in league with Revok, kill Damar's would-be allies. Their orbiting ship is destroyed as well. So, Garak seeks the only person on Cardassia he trusts: Mila, his father's "housekeeper," to whom Garak likely has a much closer relationship than is ever verbally acknowledged. She puts up Garak and his fellow revolutionaries in the basement of his childhood home, and sets them to work cleaning it!

"The Federation claims to abhor Section 31's tactics, but when they need the dirty work done, they look the other way. It's a tidy little arrangement, wouldn't you say?" -- Odo

Odo is outraged to hear that Section 31 infected him with the virus to spread it to the Founders, feeling that ultimately the Federation is responsible. Sisko tells Odo that, while not condoning the act of genocide, the Federation Council has chosen not to give the Founders the cure, which would strengthen their position in a war that they started, and which still endangers millions of lives. Odo, aggrieved, gives his word that he won't take matters into his own hands.

Answer: Appealing to the Cardassian civilians

"If Damar, the man they couldn't kill, tells the people of Cardassia to rise up against the Dominion..." -- Kira

Damar, Kira, and Garak are stunned and dismayed by the news, but confined to a cellar with no way to leave Cardassia or send a message, their options are limited. Mila relays word on the street that gives Kira an idea: having been lied to by the Dominion too many times, the people don't believe that Damar is dead, whispering rumors that he is alive. Although he hardly feels like one, Kira proposes that they turn Damar into a legend, one who will incite the civilians to revolt. After attacking a Jem'Hadar barracks, Damar makes his appeal to the citizens: a united cry for freedom rises from the crowd.

Planning to retire, Zek names Quark as his successor, but thinks he is speaking to Rom. Meanwhile, Quark plans to set a new standard of greed for Ferenginar. Liquidator Brunt arrives to curry favor with Quark, whom he believes is his new Nagus, and informs him of the "deplorable" state of affairs back home. So, when Zek and Ishka bestow the title upon a shocked Rom, Quark is both dumbfounded and relieved. He declares his bar to be "the last outpost" of the old ways, but congratulates his brother, whose reaction says it all: "Wow!"

If the Dominion is left to its own devices inside its perimeter, it could spend years bolstering its forces until it is ready to take the Alpha Quadrant once and for all. Sisko and Martok convince Ross and Velal, the Romulan representative, that they must strike now, though the battle will be a costly one.

Back home, Ben Sisko finds that his wife has waited up for him and has a surprise: she is pregnant. What should be a cause for joy, however, is tinged with fear: Kasidy remembers the Prophets' warning that Ben would know sorrow after marrying her. Ben tries to assure her that nothing will happen to their baby, and everything will be all right. His trial, however, is just ahead....
