Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As the episode opens, Captain Picard and several other Federation personnel are being beamed to sick bay after being attacked by the Lenarians. What were the circumstances of this attack?

Answer: The Federation personnel were ambushed outside of a peace conference

The full story of the peace conference is not related in this episode, though it might be similar to the role Starfleet played as mediator in the "ST: TNG" episode "Loud as a Whisper". If there are any Trekkers out there who can provide some context for this, I'd be much obliged.
2. The Lenarian attack irreparably damages Picard's artificial heart, and he finds himself in a limbo-like "afterlife" with his old sparring partner, the omnipotent Q. What does Q initially present Picard with as a purgatory-like torment?

Answer: All of these

The motif of Picard's imperfect artificial heart was also used in the episode "The Samaritan Snare", where Picard grudingly confided this defect to Wesley Crusher. In the earlier episode, Picard told Wesley that he had laughed manically after being impaled, but did not explain why. "Tapestry" goes a bit further in that explanation.
3. Q "replays" the fight with three Naussicans that led to the loss of Picard's real heart. After viewing the scene, Q expresses surprise at one portion of the fight. What element of Picard's personality does Q find so disconcerting?

Answer: His laugh when he was stabbed by the Naussican

The exchange goes like this:

Q: "And did I hear a laugh? It's so unlike you, Jean-Luc, to have a sense of humor, especially about getting stabbed through the back."

Picard: "[I was] a different person in those days - arrogant, undisciplined, far too much ego, far too little wisdom. I was more like you."

Q: "Pity you had to change."
4. Q sends Picard back to the days just after his graduation from Starfleet Academy to prevent the fight that cost him his heart. His first interaction with this past reality is, appropriately enough, a slap in the face. What were the circumstances of this rude awakening?

Answer: Picard had been caught two-timing a woman who was none too pleased about his duplicity

The lady in question, named Corlena, had discovered that Picard had a later date with a woman named Penny. When Picard ham-handedly insults Penny on their date, Penny throws her drink in his face. Smooth guy, that Jean-Luc.
5. Picard and his friends (Corey and Marta) first get into a conflict with a Naussican when he cheats Corey at a game not unlike billiards. What is the name of this high-tech parlor game that eventually turns ugly?

Answer: Dam-Jat

Picard recalls how Corey later realized the Naussican had been cheating. In Picard's younger days, he had helped Corey by rigging the table so Corey would win the rematch; this precipitated the fatal fight. Now Picard just wants Corey to avoid the whole thing.
6. After Picard seemingly convinces Corey not to retaliate against the Naussican, Jean-Luc and Marta have a tender moment in Jean-Luc's quarters. What interrupts them?

Answer: Q comes in disguised as a deliveryman, carrying flowers and asking for a "Gene-Luck Pickurd"

Marta is played by the strikingly attractive actress J. C. Brandy, who has also appeared in the films "What Lies Beneath" (with Harrison Ford) and "Prometheus Bound", which she also co-wrote and produced.
7. Picard and Marta do end up spending the night together. Which of these best characterizes the "morning after"?

Answer: They have an awkward moment in the starbase lounge, with Jean-Luc being coldly civil and Marta wiping away tears

Saying that she will never be able to forget their night together, Marta insists that they meet with Corey for one last drink that night as they had planned for months beforehand.
8. Corey, Marta, and Jean-Luc meet in the lounge for one last drink together before their first assignments. They are accosted by the three Naussicans, who demand a game and insult Marta's honor. How does Picard prevent Corey from striking the Naussican?

Answer: He blocks Corey's punch and pushes him, sending his friend sprawling over a table

The excuse Picard gives to Corey is that the Naussican was reaching for a weapon. Corey doesn't buy it, telling Picard: "I don't know who you are anymore, but you're not my friend." Marta is also alienated, dismissing Picard curtly and walking away.
9. After Picard prevents the fight with the Naussicans and saves his heart, he finds himself in an alternate future that has been profoundly changed by his alteration of the past. What is Picard's position in this alternate future?

Answer: He is a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the Astrophysics department aboard the Enterprise

This turn of events is the crux of the episode. Picard realizes that this confrontation with mortality brought his life into focus and that he would rather die the noble man he is than live as a functionary with no passion or imagination. Q honors this choice and sends him back to be fatally wounded by the Nausican, only to spare his life in the present.
10. At the end of this episode, Picard muses that Q actually did him a great favor, and that pulling at "threads" like the Nausican incident shows how intricately the tapestry of his life is woven. To whom does Picard confide this insight?

Answer: Commander Riker

This 1992 episode was written by Ronald D. Moore and directed by Les Landau.
