quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On-board a shuttlecraft, Picard offers sandwiches to Wesley Crusher as they discuss Picard's careless adolescence.

Answer: "Samaritan Snare"

This episode has two main plots, which are almost entirely separate, and surprisingly the most interesting of the two is the one without any action in it. Picard must go to a nearby starbase to have his artificial heart replaced, and decides to share a shuttle with Wesley Crusher, who is going there to get tested for Starfleet Academy.

They have some very interesting discussions along the way there.
2. Data ogles a female officer on the bridge, then walks off whistling a tune from "The Wizard of Oz".

Answer: "The Schizoid Man"

Data's body has been taken over by the mind of his "grandfather", Dr. Ira Graves, the cybernetics expert who taught Dr. Soong (Data's own creator). Just as Graves' body dies of a disease, he manages to transfer his mind into Data, and is now walking around in his body. Graves' unusual behavior eventually gives his identity away to the Enterprise crew... but only eventually.
3. Riker is sitting in Ten-Forward, having himself a feast of wonderous (and quite disgusting) dishes.

Answer: "A Matter of Honor"

Riker is preparing himself for a tour aboard the Klingon vessel "Pagh", by eating a wide variety of Klingon foods. Although he seems to enjoy it, when he offers some to Pulaski and Picard they react with visible unease. Riker also studies a little about the day to day life on-board Klingon ships, which would later help him befriend the Klingon crew, but nothing can really prepare him for the callous and paranoid behavior of the Pagh's captain.
4. The Enterprise intercepts a probe traveling at warp 9 in deep space, flies alongside it, and beams it aboard.

Answer: "The Emissary"

The probe contains an official Federation emissary, a half-klingon half-human woman. She is coming to the Enterprise to help plan an impending encounter with a Klingon ship that is about to come out of a 75-year-long dormancy. The crew of that ship likely has no idea that the war with the Federation is already over, and who knows what damage they could do? The emissary also turns out to be an old flame of Worf's, which complicates matters significantly.
5. Worf pushes aside a piece of furniture and attempts to fire a prolonged phaser blast at the wall behind it. The wall is completely unaffected.

Answer: "The Royale"

The away team is trapped within an awful pulp novel. Well, actually, they're trapped inside a very faithful alien recreation of an awful pulp novel; one which is centered around a 1950's casino hotel - the eponymous "Royale". They try everything they can to escape, including shooting at the walls, but nothing seems to work.

They must figure out why this hotel exists in the first place, and how to end the simulation altogether, all the while having to deal with the strange people and occurrences there, all taken straight out of the cheesy, cliched novel.
6. Picard is sitting alone in his quarters with his feet up on a table, listening to some soft piano music, and awaiting his probable death.

Answer: "Where Silence Has Lease"

The Enterprise is trapped inside the laboratory of a bizarre and dangerous space being, who spends some time messing with the ship and crew to see how they'll react. When this being informs the crew of its desire to kill one third of them as an experiment in humanoid mortality, Picard decides to destroy the ship instead.

He sets the auto-destruct, and then waits patiently in his quarters to see what would happen.
7. Picard shoots himself in the chest.

Answer: "Time Squared"

The Enterprise is stuck in a dangerous anomaly out in deep space, and is about to be destroyed. Picard, believing that the anomaly is specifically interested in him rather than the ship, leaves the Enterprise in a shuttle. Unfortunately, the ship is destroyed anyway, and he is flung six hours back in time, creating a stable loop.

After he's picked up by the "six-hours-ago" Enterprise, her own Picard must kill his time-traveling counterpart in order to end the time loop, and then find a different solution to the problem.
8. Riker has a long needle inserted into his forehead.

Answer: "Shades of Grey"

In this infamous clip-show episode (often considered the worst episode of the entire series by a wide margin), Riker is stung by a deadly plant and is going to die unless a cure can be found. Pulaski puts him into R.E.M sleep, because apparently his memories of events from previous episodes can somehow help cure him. Part of this medical procedure involves drilling into Riker's brain in order to stimulate it into recalling these memories.
9. Geordi tells Riker and Pulaski that he had been looking for them but couldn't find them anywhere. The two suddenly realize that they can't recall where they've been at all.

Answer: "Up the Long Ladder"

In one of two intertwined plots in this episode, the Enterprise discovers a lost Federation colony populated only with clones of the original settlers. The clones beg the Enterprise to give them samples of the crew's DNA for cloning, to help revitalize the colony's gene pool, but the crew refuses vehemently.

The desperate colonists then resort to stunning and kidnapping Riker and Pulaski, and attempt to clone them against their will.
10. Riker scans the Federation databanks for any information he can find regarding Data's vulnerabilities.

Answer: "The Measure of a Man"

In one of the most highly-acclaimed episodes of the series, Riker is assigned to be the devil's advocate in an official hearing to determine whether Data is the property of Starfleet. Riker is warned that he must do his best as a prosecutor, or else the court will summarily rule against Data.

While searching the computer memory banks for information that could help his case, Riker discovers some interesting tidbits about Data's physiology, and reluctantly has to use this against Data in court.
11. Data interrupts Picard's horse-ride with some disturbing news.

Answer: "Pen Pals"

While he's adjusting the ship's sensors, Data makes unexpected radio contact with a young girl from a pre-warp civilization, who lives on a planet that is about to blow itself to bits. He comes to reveal this to Picard, in the hopes that the Enterprise could help save that planet. Picard, however, does not see Data's actions in a very positive light, and convenes an urgent meeting to discuss the Prime Directive and whether it can (or should!) be ignored in order to save a doomed people.
12. Picard walks out of an Enterprise turbo-lift, only to suddenly find himself in a shuttle out in deep space.

Answer: "Q Who"

Q kidnaps Picard to deep space because he had supposedly agreed never to bother Picard's ship again in a previous episode (actually, he never promised that, but just go with it). Q wants to join the Enterprise as a member of the crew, but Picard is understandably hesitant in light of Q's actions so far in the series. Q gets mad at this rejection, and decides to show Picard exactly how much he could benefit from Q's help - by flinging the Enterprise to a VERY dangerous region of the galaxy.
13. Data is sitting in his quarters, and refuses to go up to the bridge. Picard eventually has to come down there and talk some sense into him.

Answer: "Peak Performance"

While the crew is preparing for a combat exercise between the Enterprise and an old Federation derelict, Pulaski manipulates Data into challenging a grand-master of Stratagema to a friendly game. When Data loses for no visible reason, he begins to doubt his own judgment, and refuses to continue serving as a bridge officer until he can locate the perceived malfunction in his systems.
14. Geordi sets up a force field in the Sickbay, and then Pulaski beams in a person completely encased in a thin layer of plastic.

Answer: "Unnatural Selection"

A Federation research facility conducts questionable genetic research, creating a group of "super-humans" possessing extraordinary physiology. Unfortunately, the immune systems of these super-humans is so powerful that it begins to attack any nearby "normal" people, causing the targets to age rapidly.

The Enterprise beams one of these super-humans aboard for testing, taking every possible precaution to ensure that the crew is not affected. Pulaski, however, is exposed and must find a cure before it kills her.
15. Name the episode in which Data is incapacitated, but nonetheless tries to instruct Picard on how to operate an alien computer himself.

Answer: Contagion

The away team explores the ruins of an ancient, long-gone civilization, finding a sort of "teleporter room" that could take them virtually anywhere. Picard fears that the Romulans will find this technology and win a decisive edge, so he decides to destroy the entire facility.

Unfortunately, some sort of electrical surge knocks out Data - the only person who understands how to use the ancient computer that could provide the means to do so.
