Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first episode, "Caretaker," we meet the crew of the USS Voyager, as well as a Maquis commando group whom Voyager is pursuing. Which of the following Voyager crewmembers had infiltrated the Maquis crew to help capture them?

Answer: Tuvok

Tuvok was sent by Captain Janeway to impersonate a Maquis crewmember and help bring them to justice. Tom Paris used to be a Maquis, but he got caught and was sent to prison. Seska, as we find out later, was actually a spy for the Cardassians.
2. How far away did the Caretaker array throw Voyager in the series premiere?

Answer: 70,000 light years

This put Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, a region of space that the Federation had not yet come into contact with.
3. What is the name of the Starfleet engineer that was next in line for the position of Chief Engineer before B'Elanna Torres took the position?

Answer: Joe Carey

In the second episode, "Parallax," B'Elanna is named Chief Engineer. Reginald Barclay isn't even on Voyager; he was an engineer aboard the Enterprise-D, but he does make several appearances later in the series.
4. The character of Tuvok is said to have the rank of "Lieutenant" whenever he is addressed during this season. What rank does he hold according to his uniform?

Answer: Lieutenant Commander

Tuvok is shown with two full pips and one empty pip, the insignia of a Lieutenant Commander. This is fixed by the episode "Cathexis," and some speculate that it was a costuming error. Tuvok is promoted to Lieutenant Commander in the fourth season.
5. In the episode "Phage," we are first introduced to a race of aliens that suffers from a deadly disease. What is the name of this species?

Answer: Vidiians

The Vidiians "harvest" organs from other races to stay alive. The Telpans also suffered from a disease, but they reside in the Gamma Quadrant. The Voth and the Hirogen are two species that Voyager encounters later in its travels.
6. Whose DNA may contain a cure for the disease of the aliens in "The Phage?"

Answer: B'Elanna Torres

B'Elanna is half-Klingon, and the Klingon immune system is highly resistant to disease. She is captured by the Vidiians in the episode "Faces."
7. In the episode "Prime Factors," Voyager encounters a species with technology capable of significantly shortening their journey home. After diplomatic paths fail, some of the crew decide to disobey the captain's orders and purchase the device illegally. Which of the following crewmembers was not involved with this conspiracy?

Answer: All of these were involved

B'Elanna Torres was also in on the conspiracy. Although Tuvok did not convey his plans with the others, he was the one who went to the surface and made the transaction. This was surprising to Captain Janeway, as she thought she could trust her Security Officer.
8. The episode "Heroes and Demons" is centered around a certain Holodeck novel of Harry Kim's. What epic story does this program follow?

Answer: Beowulf

Beowulf is considered by some the first example of English literature ever recorded. It was written between 700 and 1000 AD. The other choices are also epic works of poetry.
9. What Voyager crewmember was killed in the episode 'Faces?'

Answer: Peter Durst

Durst, B'Elanna, and Tom were captured by the Vidiians, so that they might find a way to use B'Elanna's Klingon DNA to cure their phage. Frank Darwin is later found dead in the season two episode "Meld."
10. What species is the doctor on Voyager?

Answer: None of these

The Doctor is actually a hologram, officially titled Emergency Medical Hologram, or EMH. He was activated because Voyager's medicinal staff was killed in the series premiere, and became the new Chief Medical Officer.
