"The Amazing Race 19" [1] Trivia Quiz

Eleven teams of two began their race with the dropping of Phil's hand at the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights, California and for their first task, teams needed to search through a wall containing hundreds of traditional Asian parasols to find one containing three letters that would match up to a word puzzle given prior to the task.

This word puzzle was 'WANPEI', so teams needed a parasol marked 'T A I' to create their first destination: Taipei, Taiwan. The last team to complete this first task would receive a penalty int he first leg of the race called a Hazard.

After finishing the task, teams were given keys to a Ford Explorer so that they could drive to the airport to board one of two flights to Taipei leaving that evening.

Answer: An electronic billboard

Arriving in Taipei, teams needed to take a bus into the downtown sector of the city in order to find the Ximending Commercial District where they would need to look up for their next clue. What teams didn't know was that their clue would be written in Chinese on a large billboard covered in red and yellow balloons.

They would need to have someone translate their next destination: Taipei Confucius Temple. Continuing onward through the city, this is where they located their next clue.

Answer: Memorize and recite a proverb

Arriving at the Confucius Temple, teams were required to choose one member to complete the first Road Block of the race. For this task, the selected member needed to locate a payphone on the temple grounds and call 1-800-CONFUCIUS to listen to a proverb written by Confucius. They then had to recite the proverb without any help or written copies to a monk to receive their next clue. This memory task was completed by Cindy, Jennifer, Sandy, Amani, Ethan, Zac, Ron, Andy, Lisa, Liz, and Cathi.
After this task, teams took a taxi to the Daija Riverside Park for their next clue.

Answer: Kaylani and Lisa

After the Road Block, Kaylani and Lisa (who were the last to leave the task at the starting line in the United States) were required to complete the first-ever Hazard task at the Core Pacific City Mall. Here, one of the two teammates needed to perform an indoor bungee jump within the mall itself before they could continue on with the rest of the leg. Kaylani performed the jump before they made their way to Daija Riverside Park. Once under the bridge here, teams needed to don lifejackets and hop into a dragonboat. One team member would join the dragonboat team in paddling while the other would man the drum. Completing this circuit resulted in the next clue.

Answer: Ernie and Cindy

After completing their dragonboat race, teams were told to make their way to the first Pit Stop of the race, the Martyr's Shrine in Taipei. Here, Ernie and Cindy stayed ahead of the crowd to take first place. For their victory they won the elusive Express Pass which would allow them to skip any task of their choosing in the first eight legs of the race. In the end it was Bill and Cathi who arrived at the mat in last place having trailed through the majority of their time in Taiwan.

While they were spared from elimination in this leg they were told that they would need to complete a Speed Bump in the coming leg of the race.

In addition, Leg 2 would be the first-ever double-elimination leg; two teams would be eliminated on the mat.

Answer: Indonesia

Departing from the Martyr's Shrine in the evening, teams were told that this leg of the race would be the first-ever double elimination leg. In addition, they would be flying to the city of Jakarta, Indonesia over two thousand four hundred miles away. All eleven teams took the same flight at 8:45 in the morning and were required to make their way to the local train station to catch an overnight ride to the city of Yogyakarta.

This result in the teams spending nearly twenty-four hours on even ground with one another en route to their first route marker.

Answer: Spelunk in a cave

Upon arriving in Yogyakarta, teams needed to take taxis to Goa Jomblang Cave. Arriving quite early in the morning, they discovered that they would need to perform a task involving one member taking a one hundred sixty foot descent into the cave itself to search for a Javanese mask and kris. When they'd located these items they would need to make their way out of the dark cave to a large bamboo ladder which they'd need to scale to hand off their items and receive their next clue. Cindy, Marie, Marcus, Bill, Jeremy, Tommy, Justin, Ethan, Kaylani, Zac, and Bill completed this task.

Before arriving at the Road Block, Bill and Cathi, having arrived at the first Pit Stop in last place, were forced to complete a Speed Bump task. This involved unknotting a series of ropes in order to link it to a nearby carabiner. Since they arrived at the Road Block in first place they were easily able to overcome the task with minimal disruption.

Answer: Dancing

After the Road Block, teams needed to make their way into the city of Yogyakarta proper to complete their Detour, a choice between 'Shake Your Money Maker' and 'Be a Ticket Taker'. In the 'Money Maker' task, one of the team members needed to learn a traditional dance and perform it in the streets for money while the other played a traditional instrument.

When they earned 30,000 Rupiah they could continue on. In 'Ticket Taker', teams needed to park motorized scooters at a local parking lot to accumulate 15,000 Rupiah in tips. Liz and Marie, Amani and Marcus, Jeremy and Sandy, Ethan and Jenna, Kaylani and Lisa, and Ron and Bill completed 'Money Maker' while Bill and Cathi, Ernie and Cindy, Justin and Jennifer, Andy and Tommy, and Laurence and Zac finished 'Ticket Taker'.

Answer: Three

After the Detour task teams were told to travel to Aisyiyah Orphanage in Yogyakarta to donate their Detour earnings to local children who lost their homes in the 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi. Upon arriving, many teams missed a crucial sign indicating that all money in their possession would also need to be handed over for them to check into the Pit Stop. Amongst the teams to miss this important bit of information were Ernie and Cindy, Bill and Cathi, Liz and Marie, Justin and Jennifer, Jeremy and Sandy, Amani and Marcus, Ethan and Jenna, and Ron and Bill. Teams received a small souvenir mentioning their Pit Stop regardless of whether or not they completed the task properly and those who failed to follow the instructions were forced to return and make the proper donation before checking in.

Answer: Ethan and Jenna

After receiving a coat of arms, teams needed to figure out that the second Pit Stop of the race was Kraton Palace in Yogyakarta and because they'd given away all their money, they'd need to head there on foot. Although Ernie and Cindy arrive in first, they failed to follow the final clue to hand over their money. Ultimately, the fourth place team, Andy and Tommy, were the first to properly finish the leg, winning them a trip for two to Ireland from Travelocity. Because they accidentally left a clue behind at the Detour and because they didn't read the instructions at the orphanage, Ethan and Jenna became the first team to be eliminated from the race (though in tenth place).

They were followed by Ron and Bill who, likewise, made the latter mistake.

They were eliminated in eleventh place.
