Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams left Uganda in Leg 7 and flew to what Swiss city?

Answer: Zurich

Teams left Africa at the start of Leg 7 and flew 3,500 miles north to the city of Zurich, Switzerland, the nearest major city to what would be the proceeding two legs of the race. What this meant was that teams needed to head to the travel agency in Kampala and then join their competitors on the same flight into the Alps. Upon landing, they could hop aboard a train to the town of Grindelwald and collect their next clue (and a number) at the entrance of the Gletscherschlucht Glacier Gorge.
2. How many racers completed a rope swing for their Road Block task in Leg 7 (in Switzerland)?

Answer: Seven

Once teams pulled a number at the gorge (after a three kilometre run!), they could open up their Road Block clue and choose the participant for the task at hand. Here, one member of each team took the scenic route through the gorge, taking a terrifying swing four hundred feet above the glacial river below. Once they completed the drop, they could search the gorge for their next clue. Korey, Becca, Leo, Christie, Nicole, Elissa, and Chris completed this task.
3. Which team completed the 'Water Power' Detour task amongst the water reservoirs of Switzerland in Leg 7?

Answer: Nicole and Victor

Leaving the Road Block, teams were told to take a helicopter ride from the site of their Road Block up into the Alps to Grimsel Pass and, there, they would find their Detour options waiting for them. Only Leo and Jamal and Nicole and Victor ended up completing the 'Water Power' task for which they had to take a ride on the funicular at Gelmerbahn searching for eight signs listing water reservoirs and water volumes associated with them. If they could memorize all eight and identify them on a provided map on the nearby dam, they could continue racing.
4. Teams completing the 'Water Down' Detour task in Leg 7 went canyoning. Which of these was not involved in the challenge?

Answer: Spelunking

Teams not completing 'Water Power' instead finished the 'Water Down' Detour task in Grimsel Canyon. This task, completed by Tyler and Korey, Becca and Floyd, Colin and Christie, Rachel and Elissa, and Chris and Bret, sent them on a canyoning course through the Alps for which they needed to rappel 150 down into the river, jump into the frigid waters to collect their clue, then take a zipline to their endpoint at the end of the course.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the race's final non-elimination Pit Stop at the end of Leg 7?

Answer: Nicole and Victor

After their Detour tasks, teams were told to drive themselves to the seventh Pit Stop of the race waiting on the lawn in front of the 600-year-old Michaelskirche in the Swiss town of Meiringen. This leg of the race was won by Tyler and Korey who, after leading for the whole leg, took their second consecutive victory.

Instead of receiving cash or a trip, they won themselves a spa experience at the Pit Stop, allowing them to rest and relax in advance of the upcoming leg. The end of the leg proved to be a tight one with the last three teams hitting the mat within minutes of each other. Nicole and Victor ended up being the last to step on the mat but they were saved by the race's final non-elimination Pit Stop.
6. In Leg 8, teams encountered a U-Turn Vote. How many teams were forced to complete both Detour tasks in this leg?

Answer: Two

Starting Leg 8 early, all teams were directed to the Ballenberg Community Hall to celebrate one of the world's oldest democracies in Switzerland, and there they united to cast their votes-- out loud-- for two teams to be U-Turned. Colin and Christie, considered one of the toughest teams in the race, received votes from Rachel and Elissa, Leo and Jamal, and Becca and Floyd, while Rachel and Elissa received votes from Colin and Christie and Chris and Bret. It meant that they would be forced to complete both sides of the upcoming Detour.

Nicole and Victor cast their vote for Leo and Jamal while Tyler and Korey voted for Nicole and Victor, but since both received fewer votes than other teams, they survived the vote.
7. During the Speed Bump in Leg 8, the participating team needed to fold which of these to continue racing?

Answer: Flags

Though all other teams raced onward after the U-Turn Vote, Nicole and Victor had to attend to their Speed Bump, incurred in the last leg of the race when they dodged elimination. For this additional task, they needed to wait for the other teams to depart from the Ballenberg Community Hall before taking down and folding twenty-six Swiss canton flags to the specifications of a local judge. Once all the flags were packed up and placed back into their basket, they could play catch-up.
8. Which is the only team that didn't complete the Swiss 'Haymaking' Detour task in Leg 8?

Answer: Nicole and Victor

Leaving the Ballenberg Community Hall, teams could race on foot to the nearby Open Air Museum to begin their Detours (in some case two Detours). In 'Haymaking', team members had to work together to cull a lane of grass on a nearby hillside using scythes and rakes to collect cut grass and stack it to dry into hay.

In 'Cow Dressing', teams instead had to make a headdress for a cow using provided materials and then, when they'd given it to their cow, they needed to bring it to a nearby festival. Becca and Floyd, Chris and Bret, Leo and Jamal, and Tyler and Korey completed 'Haymaking' while Nicole and Victor completed 'Cow Dressing'. Both U-Turned teams completed the latter task before coming back for the former.
9. The Leg 8 Road Block asked teams to act like William Tell, shooting which of these with a crossbow bolt?

Answer: Apple

Leaving the Detour, teams needed to drive themselves to Schwanden bei Brienz and a Road Block clue waiting near the edge of the water in Oberschwanden. For this challenge, one member of each team needed to fire a crossbow in an attempt to knock an arrow off the head of a scarecrow (a la William Tell). If they knocked it off, they could get their next clue, but if they hit the scarecrow, they would need to reassemble it to try again. Tyler, Becca, Bret, Victor, Colin, Rachel, and Jamal aimed and fired.
10. Which team was eliminated from the race at the end of Leg 8, leaving the competition in Switzerland?

Answer: Rachel and Elissa

If teams could take their shots, they could take the gauntlet to the next Pit Stop by leaving Oberschwanden and driving themselves to Bootsverleih Brienz on the edge of Lake Brienz. From there, they could take a small motorboat across the lake to a marked pier and then either the stairs or a funicular up to Grand Hotel Giessbach to check in at the next eighth Pit Stop mat. Though Chris and Bret left the Road Block in first, Tyler and Korey overtook them en route to the mat to get their third victory in a row, this time winning the pair a Travelocity cruise through Vietnam and Cambodia.

The leg was lost by Rachel of Elissa who, after their U-Turn, checked into the Pit Stop in last, rounding out Rachel's record-breaking thirty-second leg of the race and marking the first time she was eliminated in her race career.
