Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Detour of the race, found in Laos, was accompanied by a Double U-Turn. Which faces did not appear on the board (either as the users or recipients)?

Answer: Leo and Jamal

At a big tree on the edge of the Mekong River in Luang Prabang, teams found the first Double U-Turn of the race with little fanfare, and in the hustle of the leg, some teams were very quickly compelled to use it. Rachel and Elissa, arriving there first, U-Turned Becca and Floyd who, in an attempt to stave off another strong team, subsequently used the U-Turn on Tyler and Korey.

It meant that both teams needed to complete either 'ABC', a task which involved learning the Laotian alphabet in a local school, or 'BBQ', which involved properly skewering duck and fish for cooking in a local marketplace.
2. In the 'Reel It In' Detour in Leg 3, teams had to catch which of these food items at a restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City?

Answer: Prawns

In Leg 3, teams spent their time wandering the nighttime city streets of Southern Vietnam's largest city, and that meant they could engage in one of two very different Detour options. In 'Reel It In' (completed by Tyler and Korey, Corinne and Eliza, and Chris and Bret), teams had to take part in a local restaurant's meal-serving policy by catching eight live prawns from the restaurant pool to make into a meal. All the other teams went to 'Light It Up', allowing them to join a dance crew and perform, in sync, to a routine in which they had to wear a glowsuit.
3. Only two teams completed the 'Irrigation' Detour task in Leg 4 when they stopped at Binh Quoi Village in Ho Chi Minh City. What was the name of the second Detour task?

Answer: Irritation

The pair of tasks that teams encountered on a humid day in Ho Chi Minh City were 'Irritation' and 'Irrigation'. In the former, teams had to paddle their way down a local stream in a basket boat while dodging other boats and crossing low bridges. If they could collect fish from downstream and bring them to their destination 200 yards from their starting point, they would get their clue.

In the latter, teams created an irrigation wheel out of bamboo, assisting local farmers in filling a bucket with river water if they could succeed in constructing the structure.
4. Teams divided out evenly over the Detour options in Dubai (in Leg 5), but which one was a limited-station task?

Answer: 'Fall'

In Dubai, teams needed to select one of two nighttime tasks either at the Burj Khalifa or the Dinosaur Park at Dubai Garden Glow. The first of these, 'Fall', was a limited-station Detour in which teams believed they would be parachuting down the side of the tallest building in the world but, in reality, they were doing so in a virtual reality simulator.

There were only two simulators available at a time, so teams completed the task on a first-come-first-serve basis, completing the challenge then answering questions about their experience to get their next clue.

The other teams searched for eggs in the dinosaur park while dressed as t-rexes instead. No stations to consider in this case.
5. Teams completing the 'Salty Roll' Detour task in Leg 6 (in Uganda) were told to prepare which of these African fish for their clue?

Answer: Nile perch

Visiting the shores of Lake Victoria in Kamapla, Uganda in Leg 6, teams had a Detour challenge which allowed them to choose between 'Salty Roll' and 'Move the Pole'. In the former, teams joined the local workforce by taking a wheelbarrow full of Nile perch and handling them at a nearby station.

After chopping the meat up, they needed to gut the fish, salt the skin, and lay it out to dry to get their next clue. Most teams instead completed 'Move the Pole' in which they had to load bikes with firewood and move them to a stacking station across the village to begin piling them. If they stacked it high enough they could continue onward.
6. Both Detour tasks on Grimsel Pass in Leg 7 (in Switzerland) involved which element in their names?

Answer: Water

In 'Water Power', teams took a ride on the steepest funicular in the world, the Gelmerbahn, keeping their eyes peeled for blue signs bearing the names of eight local water reservoirs and the amounts of water they could contain. When they had them memorized, they could make their way across the dam at Gelmersee and place those names with their respective locations on a map to collect their next clue.

In 'Water Down', teams instead took a canyoning course through Grimsel Canyon.
7. Two teams were U-Turned by a democratic vote in Switzerland in the race's eighth leg. One was Colin and Christie, but who was the other?

Answer: Rachel and Elissa

Visiting the Ballenberg Community Hall in Hofstetten bei Brienz, Switzerland at the start of Leg 8, the seven teams remaining in the race were informed that they would be voting, then and there, for two teams to be U-Turned for the upcoming Detour. It's because of this that both Colin and Christie and Rachel and Elissa were forced to complete both the 'Haymaking' and 'Cow Dressing' options while the others only completed one or the other. Colin and Christie managed to excel, checking into the Pit Stop in third place despite the setback; Rachel and Elissa were eliminated.
8. All teams completed the 'Poetry in Motion' Detour task in Croatia in Leg 9. If they hadn't, they would've needed to search the beach using which of these items?

Answer: Metal Detector

If they hadn't done the 'Poetry in Motion' task, which required that they memorize a tongue twister while riding on a flying tube ride across the waters of Kasjuni Beach, teams instead would've donned snorkel gear and completed 'Washed in from the Ocean', which allowed them to search around marked buoys with a metal detector for one metal chalice and five coins which they could trade for their next clue. All teams ended up completing 'Poetry in Motion' though some wasted their time with the coins.
9. In Leg 10, teams completed either 'High' or 'Dry' in the Netherlands. Which was the only team to choose to complete 'Dry'?

Answer: Nicole and Victor

Visiting the Dutch town of Kampen in Leg 10, teams tandem biked to one of two Detour choices (or both, as it were), either 'High' or 'Dry'. In 'High', teams biked to a local farm to strap a large plastic cow into a trailer then, again on bike, they had to travel into town to lash it to a pulley system and haul it up to the top of the Nieuwe Toren bell tower in an allotted time. Only Nicole and Victor went for 'Dry' instead, for which they had to complete an "Amazing Race" Switchback of ditch vaulting, using a pole to cross a boggy ditch to retrieve cheese and eggs which they could deliver to the market in town.

This leg of the race also had a Double U-Turn wherein Leo and Jamal U-Turned Nicole and Victor (who also had to complete 'High') and Nicole and Victor U-Turned Becca and Floyd (leading to their elimination).
10. The final Detour task of the race, in London in Leg 11, was a choice between 'Know' and which of these alternatives?

Answer: 'Row'

The choices for this last Detour allowed teams to exercise severe mental acuity or push to the limits of their physical abilities. In 'Know', teams used memory and brain power to memorize a complicated cab route through the London city streets. If they could track the entire route including seven points of interest and all turns taken on fifteen streets (as recited by their cab driver) they could get their next clue. Leo and Jamal, Tyler and Korey, and Nicole and Victor completed this task. In 'Row', teams had to head to Hyde Park where, hopping into a double scull boat on the Serpentine, they needed to work together to complete a 200m sprint in under a minute.

This task was completed by only Colin and Christie.
