Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The starting line for this season of the race was in California. There, teams needed to search for their first clue in a sand sculpture of which of these?

Answer: Octopus

Eleven teams headed to the starting line on the pier at Hermosa Beach in this thirty-first season of the race, and this time they were comprised of teams hailing form earlier seasons of "The Amazing Race", "Big Brother", and "Survivor". Once Phil gave them the go-ahead, teams had to start their journey by racing back to the beach and digging through an immense octopus-shaped sand sculpture for their very first clue inside. Teams could depart for LAX as soon as they got their info.
2. Leg 1 took teams to the capital of what Asian country?

Answer: Japan

Leaving the United States behind, teams needed to fly over the Pacific, five thousand miles west to the Japanese capital city, Tokyo. Upon their arrival, they would be able to board a charter double-decker bus that would take them directly into the heart of the busy metropolis, Shibuya.

As soon as they disembarked they would be handed their next clue, and this allowed them to search for one of two locations in the busy streets surrounding the Shibuya Scramble crossing-- ACB Lock & Security or Tokyo Tokyo Restaurant. Both stations had limited amount of clues waiting, so teams needed to find them fast to make sure they could carry on.
3. During the race's first Road Block, teammates had to chop into sandals looking for one made of what substance?

Answer: Chocolate

Teams would instructed to head on foot to the EDGEof Shibuya Building and to head to the fifth floor to start their first Road Block of the race. For this task, participating team members (Jamal, Christie, Janelle, Victor, Elissa, Tyler, Floyd, Chris, Laura, Eliza, and JJ) needed to participate in a Japanese game show-style challenge, entering a room and picking out a sweet new pair of shoes by selecting geta sandals, one at a time, and biting into them. Only twelve in the room would be made of chocolate. If they got one, they would be able to eat a portion of it with their partner and get their next clue from a hostess.
4. The first leg of the race did not feature a Detour task.

Answer: True

After their chocolate Road Block, teams needed to find a taxi and take a ride to Onarimon Station in Minato, Tokyo. There, they could head to Shiba Koen to find their second Road Block task for this leg of the race, and because of the rule for double Road Block legs, those who did not complete the first were told they would need to climb Mount Fuji. For this task, Leo, Colin, Korey, Nicole, Rachel, Becca, Bret, Britney, Corinne, Art, and Rupert had to don a smooth costume and climb a slippery twenty-foot slope (once again in a challenge inspired by a Japanese game show).

At the top they would get their next clue.
5. Which team, penalized during the first leg of the race, was eliminated at the Pit Stop in Leg 1?

Answer: Art and JJ

Ending their first leg of the race, teams needed to go to the top of the highest hill in Central Tokyo to check in at the race's first Pit Stop in front of the shrine at Atago Jinja. Taking redemption in Tokyo, Leo and Jamal led the leg and checked in in first place (after being eliminated in Japan in "The Amazing Race 23").

The cousins won themselves a seven-day cruise in Tahiti courtesy of Travelocity for their efforts. Although Art and JJ arrived at the second Road Block in tenth, Art was unable to finish his task, incurring a four hour penalty.

It allowed Rupert and Laura to check into the Pit Stop in tenth, knocking the friends out of the race.
6. Teams travelled to Laos in the beginning of Leg 2 and, upon arriving, provided items to which of these locals?

Answer: Monks

Teams left Tokyo for a change of pace at the start of Leg 2, picking up tickets and taking themselves more than two thousand five hundred miles southwest to the capital city of Laos, Luang Prabang. When they touched down in the evening they would be able to hop into a tuktuk and proceed to the Villa Santi; a courier would bring their clue before sunrise.

At 5:00am, they would be told to make their way to Wat Sensoukharam and prepare to hand off alms of sticky rice to the local monks. Once the procession passed by, teams would get their next clue.
7. Was the Double U-Turn found in Laos in Leg 2 considered 'Blind'?

Answer: No

After their early morning offerings, teams were told to proceed to the big tree on the Mekong River to find their next clue, and when they arrived, they were surprised by the appearance of an unexpected Double U-Turn. Rachel and Elissa, arriving first, used the U-Turn to send Becca and Floyd to both Detours. Becca and Floyd, convinced by Leo and Jamal, subsequently U-Turned Tyler and Korey to protect themselves.
8. Which team did not complete the 'ABC' Detour task, learning the Laotian alphabet in Leg 2?

Answer: Colin and Christie

Reaching the Double U-Turn, teams were given the choice between their first Detour options. In 'ABC', teams visited a local school where they had to learn and then recite the Laotian alphabet in an oral exam while in 'BBQ', they instead headed to the BBQ Alley open air market to purchase three ducks and eight fish to skewer and prepare for the local vendors. 'ABC' was completed by Tyler and Korey, Corinne and Eliza, and Rupert and Laura while 'BBQ' was done by Rachel and Elissa, Colin and Christie, Nicole and Victor, Leo and Jamal, Becca and Floyd, Janelle and Britney, Chris and Bret. Because they were U-Turned, Becca and Floyd went back to complete 'ABC' and Tyler and Korey headed over to 'BBQ'.
9. Team members hopped onto elephants in the second leg of the race, completing their Road Block by locating which of these in the Laotian rainforests?

Answer: Musicians

Wrapping their Detour tasks, teams were instructed to proceed to the elephant village at Ban Xieng Lom near the edge of the Nam Khan River. It was there that teams would nab their Road Block clue and select a participant who would learn Lao commands and, riding an elephant, navigate over the river searching for local musicians. Once they found the musicians the could grab their clue and return, on elephant-back, to their partners. Racers who completed this task included Jamal, Nicole, Elissa, Corinne, Christy, Britney, Becca, Chris, Tyler, and Rupert.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the race's second Pit Stop (and, thus, eliminated)?

Answer: Rupert and Laura

Coming out of their Road Blocks, teams had to go through a transportation gauntlet first by taking their tuktuks back into Luang Prabang to find the temple of Wat Xieng Thong, then taking a longtail boat to Prince Phetsarath's Palace on the banks of the Mekong River. Leo and Jamal won their second leg in a row, staying narrowly ahead of Nicole and Victor and taking a $2,500 USD cash prize for each teammate.

This leg of the race would ultimately be lost by Rupert and Laura who, trailing for two legs, were unable to overcome the rest of the pack.

They would hit the mat to be eliminated in tenth place.
