Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sabotage Pass given to Jaskirat and Anurag for Leg 9 forced them to carry which of these around Alice Springs?

Answer: Kangaroos

To begin Leg 9, teams were taken back to the city of Darwin to open their clues at Bicentennial Park, and it was there that they were told to head straight to the airport to lock in a flight to the city of Alice Springs, thirteen hundred kilometres south. Upon landing they could drive themselves to the Alice Springs Library bus stop to sign up for one of two early morning departure times on a local bus, first-come, first-serve.

This leg, because Dwes and Katherine were given the Salvage Pass, they were given a personal driver upon arriving in Alice Springs. Jaskirat and Anurag, however, received the Sabotage Pass. For this, they were forced to carry one large kangaroo plush each throughout the remainder of the leg.
2. Unfortunately, the hot air balloon Road Block task in Leg 9 was cancelled due to rain.

Answer: False

Teams stayed in Alice Springs overnight, only catching the bus at the crack of dawn (with four teams leaving at 4:00am and the other four leaving on a second bus shortly after). Before leaving, however, teams received a Road Block clue for which they needed to choose the 'biggest gasbag', the goal of which was to send one team member above the Outback in a hot air balloon to drop coloured bags on targets scattered across the landscape. Due to unfavourable weather, however, the task needed to be cancelled mid-flight.

As a result the teams faced an Intersection instead, during which they were required to work with the other teams in their balloon group to properly pack up the hot air balloons and receive their next clue en masse.
3. Near Alice Springs in Leg 9, teams completed a regatta while facing an onslaught of which of these?

Answer: Pirates

After ballooning in the Outback, teams reboarded their buses and headed back into Alice Springs proper with their next clues. After disembarking back at the Alice Springs Library Bus Stop, teams traveled by taxi to the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to locate Todd River, the site of the Henley-On-Todd Regatta on the Todd River. For this task, each team needed to carry a land boat and complete a half-kilometre regatta race in the dry riverbed. If teams could dodge the local pirates and cross the finish line, they could get their next clue.
4. Which Detour choice was completed by more teams in Alice Springs in Leg 9?

Answer: 'Build'

After the land regatta, teams were given a Detour clue forcing a choice between 'Build' or 'Bathe', both of which sent teams back into Alice Springs. In 'Build', teams visited Alice Springs Skate Park where they needed to construct and paint one of three types of skate ramp for local enthusiasts-- a grind box, a quarter-pipe, or a tabletop ramp.

In 'Bathe', teams instead went to Pyndon Camel Farm to bathe, dry, and groom a camel. Dwes and Katherine, Jaskirat and Anurag, Amanda and Ashleigh, Chris and Aleisha, and Holly and Dolor went to 'Build' while Jordan and Violeta, Brendon and Jackson, and Skye-Blue and Jake headed to 'Bathe'.
5. Arriving at the ninth Pit Stop of the race (in Alice Springs), teams encountered a mandatory twelve-hour rest period.

Answer: False

Finishing the ninth leg of the race, the eight competing teams needed to get to the Pit Stop, but to locate it they needed to make their way to the Ghan Station (at the Alice Springs Train Station). Amanda and Ashleigh, who made up time during the Detour, were the first to arrive at the Pit Stop, winning them an Alice Springs vacation experience staying at Sails in the Desert courtesy of Voyages.

The leg wasn't over however, as they were handed their next clue, told to board the Ghan, and kept on racing. Though Holly and Dolor arrived in last place, the extended leg ensured that they were not eliminated on this occasion.
6. Leg 10 saw the introduction of a new Stowaway team, Stan and Wayne, both of whom were which of these?

Answer: Bodybuilders

Although teams boarded the Ghan at the end of Leg 9, the race wasn't quite done with them. Before teams could rest, they would be locked into one of the cabins on the moving train. An iPad would inform them that they would need to solve the puzzle and escape the room to get their rest, and the fastest teams to complete the task would be rewarded with an earlier departure time at their point of disembarkation, Mount Clarence Station in South Australia.

Upon their arrival, teams were informed that a second Stowaway team would be added to the race, bringing the team count back up to ten. Bodybuilders Stan and Wayne joined the race, departing five minutes after the last team left Mount Clarence Station.
7. In Coober Pedy in Leg 10, both Detour tasks involved tasks related to which local industry?

Answer: Mining

Heading into Coober Pedy, teams needed to make a selection for the tenth leg's Detour, both of which involved the Outback town's mining operations. In 'Above', teams had to carry one hundred bucket loads of mullock from a mound at Tom's Working Opal Mine into an opal sifter while in 'Below', teams headed underground, submerged into an opal mine forty feet below the surface at the Old Timers Mine.

There, teams would be given a blacklight and be required to find an opal, which would illuminate in the UV light, and they'd need to find their way out to get their next clue. Teams split down the middle on this one with Jordan and Violeta, MJ and Chelsea, Brendon and Jackson, Jaskirat and Anurag, and Stan and Wayne going for 'Above' and Amanda and Ashleigh, Chris and Ashleigh, Skye-Blue and Jake, Dwes and Katherine, and Holly and Dolor heading to 'Below'.
8. Who participated in the sign-painting Road Block task in Coober Pedy (in Leg 10)?

Answer: Dwes

Completing their Detour tasks, teams made their way through Coober Pedy to Saint Elijah's Underground Church where teams had to orient four handmirrors in the church's main room to shine a laser on an opal resting in the center. If they could do this in two minutes, then the task would be completed and teams could grab their Road Block clue and choose one member to do 'sign language'. For this, teams headed to the town's massive Coober Pedy sign and the selected team member needed to paint one of the large letters in race colours (left side yellow, right side red) to get their next clue. Anurag, Aleisha, Ashleigh, Jackson, Chelsea, Wayne, Violeta, Skye-Blue, Dwes, and Dolor were selected for this.
9. Teams playing at the Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club had to complete a hole in how many shots?

Answer: One

The final task of the leg sent teams racing to the Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club, one of the most unique golf courses in the world due to its lack of greens. There, teams had to garb themselves in 'proper' dress code and while one member made a golf drive, their team member, carrying a fake green, would need to catch the ball in a netted hole. If the teams could work together to sink a hole-in-one in this unorthodox game, they would receive their next clue and be able to head to the tenth Pit Stop.
10. Which team was eliminated from the Pit Stop in Coober Pedy at the end of Leg 10?

Answer: Dwes and Katherine

To end off the extensive double-leg adventure from the north of the country to the south, teams drove themselves to the tenth Pit Stop of the race from the Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club to Crocodile Harry's Underground Nest, deep in the Outback. Staying ahead through the bulk of the leg, Chris and Aleisha were nearly unseen by all other teams as they checked in with a first place victory, their first of the race. Because of this, the couple won ten thousand dollars (five each). Dwes and Katherine were overtaken in the end of this leg and it meant that they were eliminated from the race for a second time, this time in tenth place.
