Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams flew to Sandspit, British Columbia where, during a Road Block task, team members learned stories behind which of these?

Answer: Totem poles

At the start of Leg 5, teams headed out from September 23 Park, immediately taking a trip to the airport so that they could fly back to Canada. This leg of the race would be sending them to Northwestern British Columbia, to the Queen Charlotte Islands. To get there, teams flew from Ho Chi Minh City through Taipei and Vancouver, to the small airport in the town of Sandspit, British Columbia. From there, they took a ferry and then drove themselves to the Haida Heritage Centre in Skidegate for a Road Block task in which one member of each team needed to listen to stories about the totem poles erected on the grounds and match their creators to their concepts. Jillian, Kristen, Ashley, Amy, Julie, Kate, and Rita completed this task.
2. Racers completed a puzzle in Skidegate in Leg 5 involving the artwork of which local native group?

Answer: Haida

After the totem pole task, teams drive to the Spirit Lake Trail in Skidegate where, at the end of the path of old growth forest, they would need to recreate two works of contemporary Haida art. What teams needed to discover was that the pieces to their puzzles would not indicate correct sides, and while all pieces would be able to fit together, they would not resemble a traditional puzzle.

After completing the puzzles, teams would be able to drive themselves to the Queen Charlotte City Harbour to catch a seaplane.
3. Which city did teams fly to in Leg 5?

Answer: Prince Rupert

After hopping onto a seaplane, teams were flown to the city of Prince Rupert on Mainland British Columbia where, upon arrival, they needed to hop into a brand new Camaro and drive themselves to the statue of Charles Melville Hays in front of Prince Rupert City Hall.

This would be teams' fourth flight of the leg, certainly pushing the envelope for flights in a single round of the race. Reaching the statue, teams located a clue box containing their second Road Block of the race.
4. A second Road Block was completed by teams in British Columbia in Leg 5.

Answer: True

Finding a second Road Block, the team members who didn't complete the totem pole task were required to head onto the waters of the Pacific solo. Teams took a water taxi to the Cow Bay Marina where the chosen member had to board a dozer tugboat and locate three marked log booms in a cordoned-off lane, moving them from one side of the area to the other simply by nudging. Steph, Emmett, Joel, Frankie, Lowell, Kelly, and Yvette were stuck completing this task before returning to the mainland.
5. Which team was eliminated from the race in British Columbia in Leg 5?

Answer: Kelly and Kate

Following the Road Block, teams took a water taxi back to Prince Rupert and needed to drive themselves out of the city towards Port Edwards where they would need to hit the next Pit Stop mat at the North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site. Steph and Kristen, who led through the entirety of the leg upon arriving back in Canada, kept their lead landing on the mat, winning their first leg of the race and a trip for two to New York City courtesy of Hotels.com.

At the end of the leg, Kelly and Kate were unable to overcome the puzzle challenge, pushing them to the back far enough that they ended up being eliminated.
6. What province did teams fly to in Leg 6?

Answer: Ontario

Teams were taken to the Sunken Gardens Park of Prince Rupert, British Columbia to commence Leg 6, and from there they were given a clue sending them to Hamilton, Ontario, nearly five thousand kilometers from British Columbia to the shores of Lake Ontario. To get there, teams had to fly from Prince Rupert to Vancouver and then to Toronto where they would take a taxi sixty kilometers to Hamilton's main Bank of Montreal branch.

There, they received a video message from a family member sending them to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum for their next clue.
7. In Leg 6 in Hamilton, how many people piloted airplanes for the Road Block task?

Answer: Five

The sixth leg of the race contained six teams, but upon arrival at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, only five completed the Road Block waiting for them. In this task, one member of each team needed to hop into a de Havilland Chipmunks, learn the controls, and pilot the plane in a 360 degree banked turn to the satisfaction of their pilot. If they stayed in the required parameters, they received their next clue. Having received an Express Pass from Steph and Kristen at the end of Leg 4, Frankie and Amy handed theirs over to avoid completing this task. Ashley, Jillian, Julie, Steph, and Rita completed this task.
8. Teams completed a trio of physical challenges in Hamilton in Leg 6. Which was not one of the requirements?

Answer: Swimming

After their Road Block, teams were told to embark on a triathlon of sorts provided by Mountain Equipment Co-Op at Bayfront Park. For this, teams began by biking to Hamilton Harbour, then they hopped into kayaks to paddle across the water before donning climbing gear and ascending a rock climbing wall to ring a bell.

When they finished all three parts of the task, they would receive their Detour clue.
9. Teams completing the 'Art Rock' Detour option spray painted which of the following to complete their task?

Answer: Beer label

After the triathlon, teams chose either 'Dry Dock' or 'Art Rock' for their Detour task. In 'Dry Dock', Steph and Kristen and Jillian and Emmett ended up at a Hamilton dry dock where they needed to use tools to weld steel and prevent leaks. If they both welded eight inches of steel properly they would get their clue.

The other four teams ended up at the Collective Arts Brewery to create a beer label using spray paint, stencils, and a canvas. If they got the colours on, properly and in order, they would get their next clue from the band Elliott Brood.
10. Which team was the last to arrive at the Pit Stop in Hamilton in Leg 6?

Answer: Joel and Ashley

After the Detour, teams needed to race across Hamilton to their sixth Pit Stop, the nineteenth century mansion known as Dundern Castle. Pulling ahead of the pack at the Detour, Steph and Kristen won their second consecutive leg of the race, taking with them another trip for two from Hotels.com, this time to Delhi, India.

Despite Frankie and Amy's struggles at both Detour options, they managed to stay ahead of Joel and Ashley, whose navigation problems caused them to struggle at the back of the pack.

But all teams, upon arrival at the Pit Stop, were handed their next clue and told to keep racing; no one would be eliminated and all teams would begin Leg 7 immediately.
