Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams commenced the race in what province or territory of Canada?

Answer: Northwest Territories

For the first time, teams headed out for a race around Canada (and more) from one of its three territories. In this first leg of the race, the ten participating teams of two lined up on the frozen waters of Frame Lake outside Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, and were sent off on a life-changing adventure. For their first task, they had to head to the ceremonial circle at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre and locate wooden signs (amongst many) teaching them how to learn the phrase 'travel safely across the land' in a First Nations language.

When properly recited they could continue to the airport.
2. After an early task, teams were told to fly to Alberta in Leg 1 to complete tasks in and around what National Park?

Answer: Jasper

Teams raced to the airport to fly to Calgary, Alberta where, after heading to the train station, they needed to make their way to Jasper National Park. At the Jasper Train Station, teams loaded into Chevrolet Colorado trucks and drove to the Jasper SkyTram to find their first clue and first Road Block task of the race. Teams heading to Calgary were split onto two different flights with four teams on the earlier plane and six on the later.
3. How many teams were unable to complete the SkyTram Road Block task in Leg 1 due to inclement weather?

Answer: Four

At the Jasper SkyTram, teams located their first Road Block which asked participants 'who's ready to let it all hang out?' In this task, the chosen teammate needed to ascend in the SkyTram, suit up, and head halfway up Whistler's Mountain to climb outside the tram car to the bottom, traverse a set of monkey bars, and climb a ladder on the other side to grab their next clue. If they fell they would go to the back of the line. On their subsequent attempts, they would be able to receive assistance from a guide line. Stephane, Emmett, Anne, Ashley, Steph, Amy, Lowell, Kelly, Yvette, and Brandon signed up to complete this task, but Kelly and Kate and Anthony and Brandon both opted to take a four hour penalty by opting out of the task.

As they day wore on, several teams were unable to complete the task due to rain and were asked to wait a predetermined amount of time before receiving their clues.
4. Which of these did team members use in Leg 1 to complete their second Road Block task?

Answer: Avalanche beacon

After the first Road Block, teams drove to the Athabasca River where they needed to paddle downstream to get their next clue, a second Road Block task. For this task, teams needed to drive to Two Valley Creek Canyon where the participating member (who didn't complete the first one) had to 'search high and low'. For this task, they completed an eighty foot rappel and a hike through the canyon to a person with an avalanche beacon. Using the beacon, they would need to locate one of three hidden caches containing their clue. Jill, Kristen, Kate, Anthony, Antoine, Joel, Rita, Frankie, Julie, and Tanya completed the task.
5. Which team was last to arrive at the first Pit Stop, resulting in their elimination?

Answer: Anthony and Brandon

After completing their second Road Block task, teams were informed that they would need to head to their first Pit Stop of the race at Pyramid Island in the middle of Pyramid Lake. Jillian and Emmett, the first team to complete the first Road Block, held onto their lead throughout the entire first leg of the race and checked in before everyone else, winning themselves a trip for two to London, England courtesy of Hotels.com.

After a long leg of the race, Kelly and Kate and Anthony and Brandon had to serve their four hour penalties and, due to this stipulation, the latter team found themselves unable to stay afloat and they were eliminated with less than an hour remaining on their countdown.
6. In Leg 2, teams completed all of their tasks in what Alberta city?

Answer: Calgary

At the start of Leg 2, teams departed from the Jasper Park Information Centre and needed to take one of three buses through Alberta to the city of Calgary. Upon their arrival, they needed to proceed on foot to the City Hall in Downtown Calgary to meet with the mayor, Naheed Nenshi, who would give them a picture of a sculpture, Wonderland, waiting outside a building known as The Bow, also in the downtown core.
7. Team members rappelled nearly six hundred feet in their Road Block task in Leg 2. Who didn't take the plunge?

Answer: Jillian

Arriving at the Wonderland statue, teams located their Road Block task, sending one team member to Calgary Tower. That team member needed to 'feel like they were in control' as they took an elevator to the top observation deck of the structure, harnessed up, and then rappelled almost six hundred feet from the top floor to ground level, receiving their clue from the tower mascot only when they reached the bottom. Antoine, Emmett, Kristen, Joel, Lowell, Frankie, Anne, Kelly, and Yvette completed the task.
8. Which team claimed two Express Passes in Leg 2 in Alberta?

Answer: Steph and Kristen

After completing the Road Block, teams needed to locate the Beatnik Bus, a mobile record store, as it drove its circuit around Downtown Calgary, playing songs and moving on, but indicating its next stops of social media. If teams could hunt it down using peoples' phones, they could get their next clue and move on. Finding the bus, teams were given an opportunity to pursue the race's Express Passes by traveling to Canada Boy Vinyl and searching through crates of vinyl records to nab them. Steph and Kristen did this, sinking through the placings for the leg, but securing the rewards.
9. Which team was the only one to complete the 'Sim' Detour task in Alberta in Leg 2?

Answer: Joel and Ashley

After finding the Beatnik Bus, teams ended up receiving their Detour, a choice between 'Swim' and 'Sim'. In 'Swim', teams went to the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery at the BOW Habitat Station and corralled trout in an indoor pool to transport them to a new container while in 'Sim', teams had to learn how to operate a crane using a simulation program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Only Joel and Ashley completed the 'Sim' task while everyone else completed 'Swim'.
10. Which team was last to arrive at the second Pit Stop, though they were spared from elimination?

Answer: Kelly and Kate

In the end of the second leg of the race, teams were told to take a taxi to their second Pit Stop located inside Studio Bell, the National Music Centre, in Downtown Calgary. Here, Jillian and Emmett ended up landing on the mat for their second first place win in a row, this time receiving a trip for two to Paris, France courtesy of Hotels.com.

In the end, a footrace was all that separated the final teams; Rita and Yvette narrowly beat Kelly and Kate, who placed last. Fortunately, they were spared since this was the first non-elimination leg of the race.
