Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of "In the Forest of the Night" the TARDIS arrives in London. Where exactly in London?

Answer: Trafalgar Square

The statue of Lord Nelson is a dead giveaway, especially when it almost crushes the Doctor and Clara. The Doctor arrives in Trafalgar Square, only to find it completely covered in forest. "We're in the middle of London," says Maebh. "No, we're in the middle of a forest," insists the Doctor.
Trafalgar Square has shown up in a variety of "Doctor Who" stories over the years, on television and in prose and audiobooks. It was where the TARDIS was set down by UNIT in "The Day of the Doctor" (2013).
Trafalgar Square has been one of London's most important public spaces since 1840, and it is often used as an establishing shot for London in films and television. The statue of Lord Nelson has been there since 1843. The square is named after the Battle of Trafalgar, a naval victory by Nelson in 1805.
2. What was the name of the girl who could communicate with the trees?

Answer: Maebh

Maebh Arden was the girl with the ability to see into the future and communicate with the trees. Maebh is the one who helped create the trees. Her sister Anabelle had gone missing, and was returned at the end of the episode. Maeve is a Celtic Goddess who is closely associated with the Earth. Anabelle is a Celtic name meaning "joy." Maebh was played by Abigail Eames. She got her start in the 2013 legal drama "Lawless".
Ruby was the rather dim student among the group in "In the Forest of the Night." Ruby was played by Harley Bird, who won a BAFTA Award for her work as the voice of Peppa Pig in the animated cartoon "Peppa Pig".
Courtney Woods is one of the older students at Coal Hill. She accompanied the Doctor on a journey to the Moon in "Kill the Moon" (2014), Kate was one of the students seen in "The Caretaker" (2014).
3. The Coal Hill School students had a sleep-over at which London museum?

Answer: The London Zoological Museum

The sleepover was at the London Zoological Museum, which exists solely in the imagination of the writers of "Doctor Who". London does have a Natural History Museum in South Kensington, near the Albert Hall. And there is the Grant Museum of Zoology, which is part of University College London.
The Doctor did visit the National Gallery of Art in "The Day of the Doctor."
While the British Museum has appeared only in "Doctor Who" prose, the National Museum did serve as the site for most of the events in the season five finale "The Big Bang" (2010).
The Tate is one of London's most important art galleries; it is located near London Bridge.
4. What was threatening the Earth in "In The Forest of the Night"?

Answer: Solar Flares

A giant solar flare was headed directly towards the Earth. Fortunately, the trees were able to create a giant oxygen bubble that surrounded the Earth and dissipated the solar flares, saving the people of the Earth.
The Doctor noted that similar events had happened in the past, such as the Tunguska Event of 1908, in which trees absorbed the blast of a cosmic collision.
5. What scares off the wolves that are chasing the little girl?

Answer: Tiger

A tiger scared off the wolves. As the Doctor noted "There is a sound scientific reason for being frightened" of tigers. Danny was able to scare off the tiger, with a flashlight of all things.
The wolves had been chasing Maebh, who hid behind a fence. The fence was not very good protection, as the wolves could leap over it. Just to add to the fairy tale metaphor, Maebh was wearing a red riding costume.
6. What group of students from Coal Hill School does the Doctor meet in "In the Forest of the Night"?

Answer: Gifted and Talented Program

Clara introduced the students as being members of the "Gifted and Talented" program. How Ruby managed to make it into the group boggles the mind. Later, when she was alone with the Doctor, Clara admitted that the students aren't really gifted and talented, "we just call it that to make them feel better about themselves."
7. Quick refresher... What subject does Danny Pink teach at Coal Hill?

Answer: Mathematics

Danny is a math teacher. He was shown attempting to teach Ruby about the geometry of triangles, without much luck. The Doctor continues in his mistaken belief that Danny is a physical education teacher. Maebh even corrected him on that. Clara Oswald teaches English.
The Doctor has had a history teacher on board the TARDIS. Barbara Wright, played by Jacqueline Hill, was aboard for the first three seasons of "Doctor Who" (1963-65).
8. Finish the statement by the Doctor: "Class Project, _____________."

Answer: Save the Earth

"Class Project, Save the Earth". The students, especially Maebh, manage to save humanity from itself. Humans were planning to defoliate the trees, which are the only shield the Earth had against the oncoming radiation.
Fortunately, the students were able to convince the Earth that the trees are there to help, and they did indeed save the world.
9. At the end of "In the Forest of the Night" Missy reveals that she loves what?

Answer: Surprises

Missy is back for yet another brief cameo. "Now that was surprising. I love surprises," stated the Gatekeeper of the Nethersphere. Evidently Missy believed the Earth would be destroyed by the solar flares, which would have given her a lot more customers.
Missy is played by Michelle Gomez, who is a Scottish actress. She has been acting since 1989. Her first big film was "The Acid House" (1998). Gomez appeared in "Bad Education," a BBC comedy series in 2012 and was a crazy wedding planner in the 2012 film "The Wedding Video".
10. Who wrote the episode "In the Forest of the Night"?

Answer: Frank Cottrell Boyce

While this is Frank Boyce's first "Doctor Who", he is one of the most respected screenwriters in England. Since "Forget About Me" in 1990, he has collaborated with director Michael Winterbottom six times, including "Welcome to Sarajevo" (1997), "The Claim" (2000) and "24 Hour Party People" (2002). Boyce worked with Danny Boyle on the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics in London.
Sheree Folkson was the director. She has been working in British television since the early 1990s, and has made a few films. Odd "Doctor Who" link: David Tennant (Tenth Doctor) was the star of Folkson's 2011 film "The Decoy Bride".
Siwan Morris played Maebh's mother. Morris has been acting in British television since 2000, including the supernatural series "Wolfblood" (2012-2014).
Adrian Anscombe has worked as the set decorator on "Doctor Who" during seasons seven and eight. He worked as property master since the start of the reboot, from 2005 to 2011. Ancombe is the one who made the trees look so cool.
