Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is NOT one of the second Doctor's companions?

Answer: Dodo

Dodo traveled with the first Doctor from the stories 'The Massacre' to 'The War Machines'.

Both Ben and Polly traveled with both the first and second Doctors from 'The War Machines' to 'The Faceless Ones'.

Zoe traveled with the second Doctor from 'The Wheel in Space' to 'The War Games'.
2. Which instrument did the Doctor carry around with him and often play?

Answer: recorder

The recorder was a 'Troughtanism' that stuck throughout the whole of this regeneration. On the success of the second Doctor's recorder, it was debated whether the third Doctor should play the guitar, as that was one of Jon Pertwee's many talents, but nothing came of it.

The only other incarnation of the Doctor to have shown musical talent of any sort was the seventh Doctor, who often played the spoons.
3. Out of the second Doctor's companions, which one traveled with him for the longest?

Answer: Jamie

Jamie accompanied the second Doctor for all but one of his adventures, totalling 21 stories (including 'The Two Doctors' in 1985). The young Scotsman traveled with the Doctor from 'The Highlanders' to 'The War Games' where he and fellow companion Zoe said a heart breaking farewell to the Doctor, who also regenerated in the same story.

Zoe traveled with the Doctor and Jamie for eight stories.

Ben and Polly traveled with the second Doctor for six stories (and with the first Doctor for 3).
4. The second Doctor returned to the series three times during multi-Doctor stories, but which of the following Doctors did he not meet?

Answer: Tom Baker (fourth)

Patrick Troughton returned in 'The Three Doctors' alongside William Hartnell and Jon Pertwee. He then appeared in 'The Five Doctors' (minus one, as the fourth Doctor was trapped in a time loop for the entirety of the story and didn't appear apart from a clip from the disused episode 'Shada') alongside Richard Hurndall (who played the first Doctor as William Hartnell had sadly passed away), Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison. Pat's final Doctor Who appearance was with Colin Baker in 'The Two Doctors' where he was accompanied by Jamie for the first time since 'The War Games'.
5. What was Polly's job before she joined the Doctor in the TARDIS?

Answer: secretary

Polly was the secretary of Professor Brett, who had developed a malevolent computer called WOTAN in the story 'The War Machines'.

Ben was the sailor, the first Doctor's companions Ian and Barbara were school teachers and the fourth and fifth Doctor's companion Tegan was the air hostess.
6. What is the name of the recently formed military organisation that the Doctor first meets in 'The Invasion'?

Answer: UNIT

Headed by Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stuart (who has been promoted from Colonel since the last time the Doctor met him the 'The Web of Fear'), UNIT made its first appearance in the second Doctor story 'The Invasion' and went on to appear regularly throughout the Pertwee era. The Brigadier, Sergeant Benton and Captain Yates were the three main UNIT regulars.

HAVOC was the name of the group of stuntmen during the third Doctor's era and was also the name of the parallel UNIT in 'Inferno'.

WOTAN was a 'revolutionary new computer that could actually think for itself' which actually transpires to be the title baddie of 'The War Machines' that the first Doctor, Ben, Polly and Dodo encounter.
7. Which of the following was Zoe NOT?

Answer: poet

Zoe Heriot was an astrophysicist with a degree in pure mathematics who was working as a librarian when she first met the Doctor. She was extremely intelligent, and sometimes rivalled the Doctor's own knowledge, though she never showed and poetic skills.
8. Which popular enemy returned not once, not twice, but FOUR times during the second Doctor's era?

Answer: the Cybermen

The Cybermen appeared in 'The Moonbase', 'The Tomb of the Cybermen', 'The Wheel in Space' and 'The Invasion'

The Daleks and the Ice Warriors both appeared twice, in 'The Power of the Daleks', 'Evil of the Daleks' and 'The Ice Warriors' and 'The Seeds of Death'.

The Yeti appeared in 'The Abominable Snowman' and 'The Web of Fear', though a third story was planned which was intended to provide Jamie's swansong, but when Frazer Hines decided not to leave, the story was dropped.
9. Which enemy appeared in Victoria's swansong?

Answer: the Weed Creature

'Fury from the Deep', all the episodes of which are now missing, was the only story to feature the creepy Weed Creature. At the end of this story, much to Jamie's dismay, Victoria decides to stay on Earth with the Harris family.
10. One of Patrick Troughton's stories was the first to mention the name of the Doctor's race - the Time Lords - but which of the following was it?

Answer: 'The War Games'

'The War Games' was the last episode to feature the second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe and was also the first episode in which we go to the Doctor's home planet - albeit briefly - and the name of his race is mentioned. We don't learn then name of his planet until the third Doctor story - 'The Time Warrior'.
11. Where did Ben and Polly first meet the Doctor?

Answer: the Inferno nightclub

Ben and Polly first met the Doctor, Dodo and each other in the Inferno nightclub during the swingin' sixties in 'The War Machines'.

The Post Office Tower was where Polly was working at the time.

Lanzarote was where Peri met Turlough in 'The Planet of Fire'.

Ian, Barbara, Tegan and Peri first met the Doctor in or by the TARDIS in 'An Unearthly Child', 'Logopolis' and 'The Planet of Fire'.
12. The Parick Troughton story 'The Invasion' was released on DVD in November 2006, but what was special about this release?

Answer: It was partially animated.

Episodes 1 and 4 of this story were sadly missing from the BBC archives, but some geniuses at Cross Grove Animations animated the two missing episodes for this DVD release which were eagerly awaited by fans.
13. Before Ben joined the Doctor in the TARDIS he was in the Royal Navy, but what was the name of his ship?

14. Popular 'Doctor Who' writer, Robert Holmes' first 'Doctor Who' episode was in the Troughton era, but which story was it?

Answer: 'The Krotons'

Robert Holmes, probably one of the best 'Doctor Who' writers wrote 41 'Doctor Who' stories from 'The Krotons' in 1968 until he sadly passed away whilst writing the final episodes of 'The Trials of a Time Lord' (now know as 'Ultimate Foe') in 1986.
15. Patrick Troughton played two parts in the 1968 adventure 'The Enemy of the World'. But what was the name of the character, aside from the Doctor, whom he played?

Answer: Salamander

Salamander is a world dictator who bears a striking resemblance to the Doctor. In 'The Enemy of the World', the Doctor is forced to impersonate Salamander and eventually, Salamander impersonates the Doctor, which gets rather confusing. Salamander also has a strong Mexican accent.
