Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is not a name used to describe the stable wormhole on "Deep Space Nine"?

Answer: The Galactic Vortex

Bajorans, whose religion is entirely based upon the wormhole and the alien beings within it, have always referred to the wormhole as the Celestial Temple of the Prophets. In the episode "Sanctuary", the Skrreea, a displaced alien race looking for a new home, called the wormhole The Eye of the Universe.

The Jem'Hadar called it The Anomaly ("The Jem'Hadar") and the Founders called it The Passageway ("The Search, Part II").
2. Mark Lenard was the first actor in "Star Trek" history to portray members of three non-human races (Romulan, Vulcan and Klingon). Who was the second?

Answer: Marc Alaimo

Best known as Gul Dukat on "DS9", Marc Alaimo also played in several episodes of "TNG", including as the first Cardassian seen in "Star Trek", Gul Macet ("The Wounded"), in 1991. Prior to that, he was the Antican delegate Badar N'D'D in "Lonely Among Us", and Romulan Commander Tebok in "The Neutral Zone" (both in 1987). And he also did play a human, the 19th Century poker player Frederick LaRouque, in "Time's Arrow, Part I". Of the other listed actors, James Sloyan has played a Romulan and a Klingon on "TNG", the Bajoran Dr. Mora Pol on "DS9", and a Haakonian on "Voyager". Suzie Plakson was a Vulcan and a Klingon (okay...half-human/half-Klingon) on "TNG", a member of the Q Continuum on "Voyager", and an Andorian on "Enterprise". And Vaughn Armstrong (Admiral Forrest of "Enterprise"), has had numerous guest roles in "Star Trek", including two Klingons, a Cardassian, a Romulan, two Kreetassans, a Hirogen, and more.
3. What is the tip-to-tip length of a warrior's configuration Bat'leth?

Answer: 116cm

In the "DS9" episode "Blood Oath", Jadzia Dax must convince her Klingon friends, Kang, Koloth, and Kor, that she is willing to go through with the blood oath made over 80 years earlier with the three Kilngons and Curzon Dax. During an argument with Koloth in a holosuite, she has the computer create a Bat'leth for her, providing dimensions and specifications such as length, mass, and composition.
4. Starfleet has explored some parts of all four quadrants of the galaxy.

Answer: True

The majority of the United Federation of Planets lies within the Alpha Quadrant. In "Star Trek VI", Captain Sulu made a log entry regarding the completion of gaseous anomoly research in the Beta Quadrant. The wormhole in "Deep Space Nine" leads to the Gamma Quadrant. And the Enterprise-D and Voyager were thrown into the Delta Quadrant by Q and the Caretaker, respectively.
5. In the "TOS" episode "The Trouble With Tribbles", approximately how many tribbles were on the Enterprise when Captain Kirk opened the storage compartment that held the quadrotritacale?

Answer: 1,771,561

According to Spock, this figure was based upon a single tribble bearing an average litter of ten, with each new generation multiplying every twelve hours over a three-day period. This figure was confirmed by Lt. Jadzia Dax in the "DS9" episode "Trials and Tribble-ations". Let's do the math on this...

Assuming a 24-hour day, there are six 12-hour periods in three days.
1 + 10 = 11
11 x 10 = 110 -- 110 + 11 = 121
121 x 10 = 1,210 -- 1,210 + 121 = 1,331
1,331 x 10 = 13,310 -- 13,310 + 1,331 = 14,641
14,641 x 10 = 146,410 -- 146,410 + 14,641 = 161,051
161,051 x 10 = 1,610,510 -- 1,610,510 + 161,051 = 1,771,561

...And there you have it! By the way, this number is also 11^6.
6. Actor Aron Eisenberg (Nog) was a teenager at the start of "DS9".

Answer: False

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" premeired in January 1993. Aron Eisenberg was born on January 6, 1969. This would place his age at 24 at the launch of "DS9". By the way, his growth was stunted when he was a child due a kidney malfunction (and subsequent transplant), which fortunately made him of perfect stature to play a Ferengi youth (Some information from www.imdb.com).
7. The term "Maquis" is based on...

Answer: The French Resistance of World War II

Loosely translated, "maquis" is a variety of thick foliage in the Mediterranean, like heath, cork oak, and arbutus. During World War II, members of the underground movement against the German occupation of France adopted this term to define how well-hidden they were.
8. Each "Star Trek" series has had at least one episode set on Earth, without holograms or illusions, during the present day for which a given series aired.

Answer: False

"Star Trek" ("Tomorrow Is Yesterday" and "Assignment: Earth"), "Star Trek: Voyager" ("Future's End, Parts I and II" and "11:59"), and "Star Trek: Enterprise" ("Carpenter Street") have had episodes set on present-day Earth. Neither "Star Trek: the Next Generation" nor "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" ("Past Tense, Parts I and II" was set in the year 2024) had such episodes.
9. Many "Star Trek" episodes (and at least one of the movies) feature a distinctive rock formation near Los Angeles. What is the name of this rock formation?

Answer: Vazquez Rocks

A very popular filming location used since the 1930s, Vazquez Rocks is located near Agua Dulce, California, about 45 miles north of Los Angeles. Vazquez Rocks and "Star Trek" have been affiliated with each other from the very beginning; the fort shown in "The Cage", where Captain Pike relived a conflict on Rigel VII, was built at Vazquez Rocks for the TV show "Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers", in 1956 (It has been torn down since then). Episodes that feature Vazquez Rocks include, but are not limited to, the following: "Arena", "The Alternative Factor", and "Shore Leave" on "Star Trek"; "Who Watches the Watchers?" on "TNG"; and "Initiations" on "Voyager".

A brief scene of "Star Trek IV" was also shot there.
10. Who was the first Vulcan to graduate at the top of the class at Starfleet Academy?

Answer: Valeris

In "Star Trek VI", Spock mentions that Lt. Valeris (Kim Catrall) is the first Vulcan to acheive the feat...

KIRK: "You must be very proud."
VALERIS: "I do not believe so, sir."
MCCOY: "She's a Vulcan, all right."
11. Shuttlecraft are always named for prominent scientists.

Answer: False

True, shuttles are named for scientists, but they are also named for explorers. A few of the more noted scientific names of shuttlecraft featured in "Star Trek" include Galileo, Copernicus, Hawking, and Goddard. Explorers immortalized on shuttlecraft include Magellan, Pike (as in Christopher Pike), and Cousteau (who was both a scientist and an explorer). One exception to the rule is Shuttlecraft Justman, seen in a few episodes of "TNG", which is named for "TOS" and "TNG" producer Robert Justman.
12. What is the name of the fish in Captain Picard's Ready Room on the Enterprise-D?

Answer: Livingston

Though this name is unofficial, the production crew of "TNG" dubbed the Australian lionfish Livingston in honor of "Star Trek" producer/director David Livingston.
David Livingston's first episode as director was "The Mind's Eye" on "The Next Generation". He has also directed numerous episodes of "Deep Space Nine", "Voyager", and "Enterprise".
13. What is the title of the first "Star Trek" episode (in order of production sequence) to feature Ensign Chekov?

Answer: Catspaw

Chekov joined the crew of the Enterprise at the start of Season 2. "Catspaw" was the first episode (#30) filmed that season, but it did not air until October 27, 1967. The first episode of Season 2 to air was "Amok Time" (#34), on September 15, 1967.
14. The "DS9" two-part episode "Past Tense" dealt with the Bell Riots of 2024, which started in what was called a "Sactuary Disctrict" in San Francisco. Which of these terms was NOT used to describe the residents of the Sanctuary Disctricts?

Answer: Shadow

A Gimme was an otherwise normal person who was down on his luck. A Dim was a person suffering from mental illness. And a Ghost was a person who failed (either by choice or by circumstance) to adapt to life within a Sanctuary.
15. Not including Enterprise crew members, who was the only guest star on "TOS" to play the same character twice?

Answer: Roger C. Carmel

Barbara Babcock played five different roles, two of them on-screen: the voice of Trelane's mother in "The Squire of Gothos", Mea 3 in "A Taste of Armageddon", the voice of the Beta 5 Computer in "Assignment: Earth", the voice of Tholian Commander Loskene in "The Tholian Web", and Philana in "Plato's Stepchildren".
William Campbell made two appearances in "Star Trek". He was Trelane in "The Squire of Gothos", and Koloth in "The Trouble With Tribbles". He would later reprise his role as Koloth in the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Blood Oath".
Skip Homeier's two appearances were as Melakon in "Patterns of Force", and as Dr. Sevrin in "The Way to Eden".
But it was Roger C. Carmel who appeared in two eponymous episodes as Harcourt Fenton "Harry" Mudd: "Mudd's Women" and "I, Mudd".
16. What is the first name of Captain Archer's father?

Answer: Henry

Henry Archer was a prominent warp theory scientist in the 21st Century. He was instrumental in the design of the Warp-5 engine model that evolved into the engine on the Enterprise (NX-01). It seems appropriate that his son, Jonathan, would be the commander of the ship his father helped to design.
17. In "Star Trek: Insurrection", the Son'a and the Ba'ku were really the same people.

Answer: True

The Ba'ku had settled in a region of the galaxy known as the Briar Patch and subsequently forsaken technology for a more agrarian lifestyle. Adding to the appeal of the planet was a system of rings that allowed the Ba'ku to be virtually immortal. But some members of the colony ached to return to space, and eventually did so. Years later (and known by this time as the Son'a), they returned to the Briar Patch with the assistance of Starfleet Admiral Dougherty (Anthony Zerbe), with the intention to harness the "Fountain of Youth" properties of the planet's rings. During the Enterprise-E's investigation of the area, Dr. Crusher discovered through DNA testing that the Ba'ku and the Son'a were really the same people.
18. Captain Archer's dog is named for a prominent man from Ancient Greece.

Answer: False

Actually, Porthos is the name of one the Three Musketeers from the novel by Alexandar Dumas; the other two Musketeers are Athos and Aramis.
19. Which of the following is the correct inscription on the dedication plaque for the U.S.S. Defiant (NX-74205)?

Answer: "All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by."

This quote, from John Masefield, made its Federation debut in "Star Trek V", as Kirk, Spock and McCoy return to the Enterprise-A after their shore leave was cancelled. By the way, the other three quotes are also on plaques. "No matter where you go..." appears on the plaque for the U.S.S. Excelsior (NX/NCC-2000). "To bring light..." is written on the plaque for the U.S.S. Stargazer (NCC-2893). And the "Gilligan's Island" in-joke is on the plaque for the U.S.S. Brattain (NCC-21166), which was featured in the "TNG" episode "Night Terrors", although some may argue that it would be more appropriate for the U.S.S. Voyager (NCC-74656)... :)
20. Captain Christopher Pike was played by two different people in the "TOS" two-parter "The Menagerie".

Answer: True

The footage taken from the original pilot, "The Cage", had Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike. The newer footage, in which Kirk meets a now-crippled Pike (and the subsequent court martial) had Pike played by Sean Kenney. Sean Kenney can be seen sans make-up in the "TOS" episodes "Arena" and "A Taste of Armageddon" (as Lt. DePaul).
