Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are many different classes of starships in Starfleet. In fact, each different design of the Enterprise we've seen over the years is from a different class. What class starship was the Enterprise in "Star Trek: The Original Series" and the 2009 "Star Trek" film?

Answer: Constitution class

Here are all the different starship classes that the Enterprise name has been attached to: Declaration Class (XCV 330, launched 2123); NX Class (NX-01, 2151-2161); Constitution Class (NCC-1701, 2245-2285); Constitution refit (NCC-1701-A, 2286-2293); Excelsior refit (NCC-1701-B, 2293-2320s); Ambassador Class (NCC-1701-C, 2332-2344); Galaxy Class (NCC-1701-D, 2363-2371); Sovereign Class (NCC-1701-E, launched 2372).

There are other renditions and classes of the Enterprise seen in alternate timelines, as well as far into the future.

Question by reedy
2. Who was the villain in Tom Paris' "The Adventures of Captain Proton" holoprogram?

Answer: Chaotica

In the "Voyager" holoprogram, made to look like low-budget movie serials from Earth's 20th century, Dr. Chaotica was an extraterrestrial who wanted to enslave Earth. Tom Paris played the hero, Captain Proton and Harry Kim played his sidekick, Buster Kincaid.

Question by CmdrK
3. The mirror universe was revisited on several occasions during the run of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine". What was the name of the first "DS9" episode in which it was featured?

Answer: "Crossover"

Doctor Bashir and Major Kira were the first two "DS9" characters to visit the mirror universe. Whilst there, they found that the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance ran Terok Nor, and that the mirror version of Kira was the Intendant running the space station with Garak as her second in command.

Question by Daddy19
4. In the "TOS" episode "The Doomsday Machine", what rank was held by Matt Decker?

Answer: Commodore

The rank of Commodore is more senior to Captain, but junior to Rear Admiral.

In "The Doomsday Machine", Commodore Decker was the commanding officer of USS Constellation, which was crippled in an encounter with the planet killer. Decker was killed trying to destroy the planet killer in one of USS Enterprise's shuttlecraft.

Gene Roddenberry wrote that Matt Decker was the father of Will Decker, who featured in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture".

Question by Daddy19
5. In the "TNG" episode "Yesterday's Enterprise" we got to see the Enterprise-C. Who was its helm officer who volunteered to command the ship after the death of the captain?

Answer: Castillo

A temporal distortion caused the Enterprise-C to emerge in the Enterprise-D's era and change the timeline. Lt. Richard Castillo was helmsman to Capt. Rachael Garrett. The 'C' had been fighting the Romulans at Narendra III. A massive photon torpedo volley sent the 'C' twenty-two years into the future. By the time the situation was understood, Garrett had died of injuries from a separate attack by Klingons. Castillo volunteered to take the ship back through a temporal rift and restore the timeline.

Question by CmdrK
6. Kirk and his crew are pulled to a planet by 'The Companion' in the episode "Metamorphosis". Whom do they meet on the planet claiming to be the man who developed warp drive technology?

Answer: Zephram Cochrane

Cochrane explains to Kirk and company that at the age of 87, he left Earth to go into space to die alone. The Companion saved his life, and rejuvenated him. It has been 150 years since that time.

Glenn Corbett played Zephram Cochrane in this episode. The character was also played by actor James Cromwell in the film "Star Trek: First Contact", where he has just invented the warp drive in the year 2063.

Question by reedy
7. What was the name of the original pilot episode for "TOS" that was remade into a two-part episode entitled "The Menagerie"?

Answer: "The Cage"

"The Cage" was originally rejected by NBC, but in an unprecedented action, ordered a second pilot. "Where No Man Has Gone Before" became the first episode of the first season of "TOS", and the discarded pilot was remade into "The Menagerie", which was broadcast as a two-part story for the eleventh and twelfth episodes of the first season.

Question by reedy
8. What was the full name of 'Trip', the chief engineer aboard the Starship Enterprise NX-01?

Answer: Charles Tucker III

It was the 'the third' at the end of his name that earned Commander Tucker the nickname 'Trip'.

In the episode "Unexpected", he became the first human male to be pregnant following a visit to a Xyrillian ship (although genetically he was not the father, just the baby's host).

Question by Daddy19
9. In the "TOS" episode "The Man Trap", an archaeologist and his wife were living on the planet M-113 while he conducted his work. The last surviving member of the civilization killed the wife of the scientist and assumed her identity. What was the surname of the human couple?

Answer: Crater

From the episode we learned that the Craters had lived on the planet for five years. The shape-shifting creature killed Nancy Crater for the salt in her body and took her form. Known originally as the "M-113 creature", Trekkers have renamed her "the salt vampire."

Question by CmdrK
10. Which musical instrument does Harry Kim play in "Star Trek: Voyager"?

Answer: Clarinet

Harry's clarinet is seen and referenced on several occasions in "VOY", although he initially forgot to take it with him when he boarded and had to save up replicator rations to be able to get a new one. When Voyager traveled through a region of the Delta quadrant with no stars or planets, Harry composed a piece called "Echoes of the Void".

We also see Keiko O'Brien play the clarinet in "Star Trek: The Next Generation".
