While the group searches the abandoned cars for supplies, Andrea stays in the RV trying to learn how to clean a gun. She is unaware that the walkers are on the highway until she sees movement out of the corner of her eye. She hides in the restroom as a walker boards the RV.

She drops a piece of the gun and the walker attacks. Dale hands her a screwdriver through the ceiling vent which she uses to stab into the walkers brain.

Daryl kills the walker as quietly as possible, but the noise still attracts walkers. Daryl pushes T-Dog to the ground and covers him with the dead walker. He covers himself with a dead body as well. The dead smell masks the smell of living flesh allowing the two to go undetected.

Sophie shifts her body to watch the passing walkers and attracts the attention of a walker that has fallen behind the herd. The walker grabs under the car and another walker joins in the hunt. Sophia runs into the woods with the walkers chasing her. Rick runs after Sophia. Rick catches up to Sophia and hides her along a riverbed.

Then he draws the walkers away and kills them with a rock. Rick returns for Sophia but she is gone.

Carl sees a deer on the way back and slowly approaches it. Rick and Shane watch as Carl walks toward the deer. A shot is fired at the deer from an unseen hunter. The bullet passes through the deer and hits Carl.

Hershel tells Rick that Carl needs surgery in order to live, but he needs supplies. Rick insists that he has to find Lori and tell her about Carl. Hershel needs Rick to stay close so he can give blood to Carl. Hershel's daughter Maggie sets off on horseback to find Lori and bring her back to the house.

Maggie is the daughter of Hershel who lives at a farmhouse close to the highway. Maggie arrives just in time to kill the walker attacking Andrea. Maggie introduces herself to the group and tells them that Carl has been shot and Lori needs to come with her. Maggie also gives the group instructions on how to get to the farmhouse.

Before the high school was taken by the walkers, FEMA had a mobile medical unit set up in the parking lot. Shane would have gone alone, but Otis wants to make things right. Otis feels terrible about shooting Carl. He apologizes telling Rick that he never even saw Carl.

Meanwhile, Shane and Otis reach the high school and notice that the path to the medical trailer is blocked by dozens of walkers. They distract the walkers with road flares that they found in an abandoned police car. They reach the trailer and find the supplies. On the way out they are chased by walkers and they run into the school.

They lock themselves in the school with walkers trying to reach them.

Carl is injured really bad and he could die without the surgery. The pain from the injury causes him to wake up and pass out frequently. Lori tells Rick that it might be better if Carl died because then he would not have to face the new world. Rick argues that Carl still sees the good things not just the bad.

Shane tells the group that there was nothing he could do for Otis. The two of them were down to their last bullets and walkers were closing in fast. In truth, Shane shot Otis in the leg so that he could escape and get back to the farmhouse. Maggie talks to Glenn about the people that they have lost. Maggie tells Glenn that she lost her step-mother and step-brother.
