Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Sega Mega CD (aka Sega CD) was an add-on for which games console?

Answer: Mega Drive/Genesis

You can tell in the name really, Sega MEGA CD was the add-on for the Sega MEGA Drive. The Mega Drive was also known as the Genesis in America because of trademark issues at the time, therefore the Mega CD is called the Sega CD.
2. In what year was the system released in North America?

Answer: 1992

It was October 15th, 1992 to be accurate. This means it was released just more than ten months after the Japanese release of December 12th, 1991 and six months before the European release of April 1993.
3. What don't US Sega CD Games have when bought new compared to other regions?

Answer: Spine Card

Spine Cards were unique to Japanese and European Mega CD games. However, American games didn't have spine cards. All games, no matter what region, had a manual. Long Boxes weren't exclusive to US Sega CD games, as some European games had long boxes. Shrink wrapping is common to any factory-sealed game.
4. The original Sega CD in all countries would come packaged with an arcade game compilation called "Sega Classics Arcade Collection" and it would come with four games, but how many games were originally planned to be in the compilation?

Answer: Ten

Apparently, early magazines that did reports on the Mega CD said that one of the pack-in games was called ""Sega Classics Arcade Collection 10 IN 1" but when it was released in America, it only had four games. In Europe it only had one extra game to make it 5 in 1.
5. The Sega Mega CD was made to compete with the Super Nintendo (SNES).

Answer: False

It was planned to compete against NEC's PC-Engine CD add-on (also known as Turbografx-16's CD add-on/Turbo Duo). It didn't sell well in Europe or America and since the Super Nintendo was on its way. Magazines and Sega's marketing team believed it would compete with the Super Nintendo.
6. One of the most infamous games for the Mega CD was released on December 1994, called "Snatcher". Who directed and wrote the game?

Answer: Hideo Kojima

Yes the same man that made all of the "Metal Gear Solid" games. "Snatcher" was also released to the MSX computer, the PC-Engine, the Saturn and the Playstation. All four of the people to choose from in this question are from Konami.
7. "Sonic CD" was another classic, but this one was more common. In Japan and Europe, "Sonic CD" had an enjoyable soundtrack to listen to, but at the last minute, the American release was delayed to give the game a new and original soundtrack, which some love and some hate. What is the name for the famous opening theme for the US version of "Sonic CD"?

Answer: Sonic Boom

"Sonic Boom" was performed by the group Pastiche (Sandy Cressman, Jenny Meltzer and Becky West) and the rest of the US Soundtrack was done by Spencer Nilsen. The Japanese/European opening was called "You Can Do Anything" which was composed by Masafumi Ogata.
8. What was the last game to be released for the system in Japan?

Answer: Shadowrun

Based off a Pen and Paper Role Playing Game, Shadowrun was the last officially released Mega CD game for the system only in Japan on 23rd February 1996, with a plan for a US release in the same year. It is also believed to be the only game that was released in 1996, as the other three games were released in Japan in 1995 (though people say that "Syndicate" was released in 1996 in Japan also).
9. The Sega Mega CD was the first system to introduce magazine issued game demos for games. Which of these magazines DID NOT offer a "Sega CD Game Demo"?

Answer: Sega Visions

"Dave Perry's Mega Power" issued demos from issue 4 (November 1993) and "Sega Pro CD" from issue 1 (October 1994) until October 1995 when "Sega Pro" was moved to report Sega Saturn and all other system sections disappeared, while "Mega Power" closed entirely. "MegaSega" was a Spanish Mega Drive magazine that gave a demo of "Mickey Mania" for free in one of its issues.
10. The Sega Mega CD had the first two games of the famous RPG series, "Lunar".

Answer: True

"Lunar: The Silver Star" and "Lunar: Eternal Blue" by Game Arts series were first released on the Sega Mega CD before being remade on the Saturn and the Playstation. Game Arts also made the shooter "Silpheed" for the same system and another famous RPG series, "Grandia".
