Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Celeste was the name of Madeline's mother.

Answer: False

Celeste was the name of the mountain that Madeline, the protagonist, wanted to climb - it was actually based on a real mountain in British Columbia. Madeline was a young Canadian woman somewhere in her early-to-mid 20s (according to the developer) who wore a snow jacket and sported long auburn hair.

Although it was a literal climb to the top, much of the journey was centered around Madeline's depression and anxiety. To her, the mountain was about finding motivation in life and conquering the inner doubts that restrained her.

Although her mother did briefly feature as an ancillary part of the plot, she wasn't named.
2. The colour code used to obtain the Crystal Heart in the first level was re-used and embellished in which other level's more complex Crystal Heart puzzle?

Answer: Chapter 6: Reflection

'Celeste' was full of collectibles. Each main level had a Crystal Heart to find, and these tended to be the trickiest of the collectibles to obtain as they tended to require a little lateral thinking to obtain. In the Forsaken City, coloured birds would move in a specific direction with a computer flashing a sequence of colours. The player would then need to link the right colours with the right directions and correctly dash six times to get that level's Crystal Heart.

In the Reflection chapter, the player would need to find a hidden room with four tiki torches in it. The first would light with the original colour code, but the others would need the player to mirror the code up-down, left-right and both up-down and left-right to light the other torches and obtain the Crystal Heart here. Tricky!
3. The surreal and unsettling Old Site level wouldn't have been the same without tracks like 'Resurrections' and 'Awake' to add to the atmosphere. Who composed these tracks, and others, for the game?

Answer: Lena Raine

Lena Raine was inspired as a child by composers like Yasunori Mitsuda in acclaimed RPG 'Chrono Trigger' who showed her the story-telling potential of video games. In 'Celeste', she blended classical piano-based techniques with electronic sounds. One nice touch was in the Mirror Temple level, where she spoke an internal monologue that might have reflected Madeline's thoughts. Her own personal experiences with anxiety allowed her to add musical touches to make Madeline's experiences feel more real. To mention another example: 'Resurrections' exemplified the dreamy discomfort that Madeline might have felt at the Old Site where she first met the negative part of her, Badeline.

Although 'Celeste' was an indie game that came from nowhere, relatively speaking, Lena Raine was given a BAFTA Games nomination in 2019 in the Music category, although it was 'God of War' which won it.
4. B-Side tapes unlocked more challenging versions of the levels. However, there were also C-Side levels to be unlocked on top of that.

Answer: True

It's not the easiest ask. To unlock every C-Side level, players will need to collect every B-Side tape, beat every B-Side level and collect every Crystal Heart. The B-Side levels were typically more like the original levels, but with harder manoeuvres and lots and lots of spikes. The C-Side levels were smaller, but with dense and difficult platforming challenges.
5. Which mechanic challenged Madeline as she made her way through the Golden Ridge?

Answer: Vicious winds

The Golden Ridge level was, thematically, a fairly light level after the angst and drama of the Old Site and the Celestial Resort. Sometimes the winds would blow against Madeline, severely restricting her movements, where at other times the winds would give her energy and momentum throwing her off-guard. Other mechanics introduced in this level included moving arrow platforms, water bubbles and bouncy clouds.

The eye creatures were found in the second half of the Mirror Temple, the star blocks were a part of the Old Site and the finale, and the hot and cold switches were the core mechanic in... well, the Core.
6. At the end of the Golden Ridge, Madeline experienced a panic attack whilst riding a gondola. Who taught her a calming breathing technique?

Answer: Theo

Theo was a cheerful aspiring photographer who was also climbing Mount Celeste, though not with as much fervor as Madeline. On the gondola, the player had to balance a feather up and down, simulating a calm and methodical breathing technique. This calmed Madeline, and he then took a selfie of the both of them.

He ended up needing some help of his own when finding himself stuck in a crystal in the nightmarish Mirror Temple; after this chapter the two had a long chat over a campfire where Theo revealed that Madeline resembles his anxious sister, Alex.
7. Early in the Reflection chapter, Madeline had the bright idea to reject the part of her that held her back, telling her that she didn't need her anymore. What was Badeline's reaction?

Answer: Angry: She threw Madeline down the mountain into a cavern

After chatting with Theo and drifting off, Madeline woke up once again and saw the Northern Lights and beautiful aurora rays. There was an uncharacteristic sense of energy and optimism in the air. She resolved to tell the part of her, Badeline, that she was strong enough to go on without her.

After climbing a celestial tower using golden Feathers, she met Badeline and gave her the news. Initially, her response was sad - how could Madeline abandon her? - but this soon turned into rage. She trapped Madeline and even her breathing technique couldn't keep her calm anymore.

She then threw Madeline all the way down the mountain, into a gloomy and lonely cavern. It felt like the end of the road...
8. At the end of the Reflection chapter, Madeline realised her potential and learned how to double dash. What colour did her hair become?

Answer: Pink

Madeline met the mysterious Old Woman again in the cavern area, who wondered if she had given up on her goal. She had considered it, seeing as the part of her purportedly refused to let her reach the summit, but eventually committed to finding her and making a resolution with her.

After winding through the maze-like cavern, Madeline had a face-off with Badeline, who was still extremely distrustful and resentful after her earlier rejection. Eventually, Madeline convinced her that they needed to work together if they were to get out of the cavern, and Badeline merged with her giving her an extra charge dash and colouring her hair a vivid pink.
9. Did Madeline eventually reach the top of the mountain?

Answer: Yes

After squaring away all the difficulties with Badeline, Madeline made her way through a long finale with extremely upbeat music which featured sub-levels inspired by each of the main levels. Each of these sub-levels had a jewel, with the final Crystal Heart needing six jewels in total.

The final section was a mountainous climb with thirty checkpoints - once Madeline reached the top the music stopped momentarily and she could then appreciate finally having scaled the mountain.
10. What did Madeline make in the Epilogue that, based on how thorough players had been in obtaining certain food items, could slightly modify the ending?

Answer: Strawberry pie

Each level had strawberries that added a little optional challenge for completist players. Some of them were mechanically demanding, where others needed to be puzzled out a little more. With 175 strawberries collected, Madeline could bake a beautiful strawberry pie for her friends that everyone loved.

The fewer the strawberries, the more critical the reaction. Of course, the game itself warned early on that 'strawberries will only impress your friends', so one shouldn't have been too surprised to see a fairly trivial reward for their copious efforts in collecting the fruit.
