Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first game, Cerberus was just a rogue black ops group that was featured in a few side-quest lines. They were much more involved the next two games. Who was the leader of Cerberus?

Answer: Illusive Man

The Illusive Man (not Elusive Man) was voiced by Martin Sheen, who also gave his likeness to the character.

Saren Arterius was the main antagonist in the first game, and Desolas was his brother. Desolas and Jack Harper (the Illusive Man) were featured in the "Evolution" comics.

Eamon Guerrin was a character from "Dragon Age", a series of high fantasy role-playing games also developed by Bioware.
2. In the first game, the main antagonist turned out to be a Reaper named Sovereign. The Reaper was revered as a god by the synthetic geth race. What name did the geth give Sovereign?

Answer: Nazara

The name "Nazara" was mentioned by the squadmember Legion when talking to Shepard in "Mass Effect 2".

The Thorian was a different life form and minor boss in the first game. Leviathan was the name given to the species that the Reapers were originally modeled after, and were featured in the "Mass Effect 3" DLC, "Leviathan".

Urthemiel was the name of the Archdemon and primary antagonist in "Dragon Age: Origins".
3. All three games in the trilogy had multiple Downloadable Content (DLC) releases. In the "Mass Effect 2" DLC, "Overlord", Cerberus was attempting to create a human-geth interface to control the synthetic species. Who was the human test subject who was tortured for the project?

Answer: David Archer

The Overlord Project was run by Gavin Archer, who used his brother, David, in his experiments. David was a mathematics savant, and was able to communicate directly with the geth.

Kate Bowman and Simon Atwell were both characters in the "Bring Down the Sky" DLC for the first game.

Utha was "Dragon Age" character who was originally a Grey Warden in the novel "The Calling", but was corrupted by the Architect in the expansion game, "Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening".
4. In the comic "Mass Effect: Invasion", Cerberus took control of Omega station from Aria T'Loak. In the "Mass Effect 3" DLC, "Omega", Shepard helped Aria take it back. What was the name of the ranking Cerberus officer on Omega?

Answer: Oleg Petrovski

Oleg was a calculating, goateed villain. He had a chessboard in his private office, and played with it while working against Shepard and Aria. Shepard could get Oleg's chessboard after the DLC, but could not invite Traynor up for a game using it.

Kai Leng was a minor recurring antagonist in "Mass Effect 3". Eva Coré was Jack Harper's (the Illusive Man) partner, who died shortly after the First Contact War, depicted in the "Evolution" comic. Her name was used for the Cerberus AI that infiltrated the Mars research station in "Mass Effect 3", whose body was later commandeered by EDI.

Loghain Mac Tir was an antagonist in "Dragon Age: Origins".
5. Used as a main hub area in all three games, what was the name of the space station that was the centre of galactic politics?

Answer: Citadel

The Citadel was the hub of galactic civilization and politics, and a central node in the mass relay network. All species that discovered the relays and space flight soon found the Citadel, and used it. It was also secretly a large mass relay, and the Reaper's primary entry point to the galaxy. During their extinction cycles, Reapers would be able to arrive right on top of the seat of galactic government and destroy it before any kind of response could be coordinated.

The "Citadel" DLC was also the final DLC for the entire trilogy; a very well received love letter from Bioware to their fans.

Lazarus station was home of the Lazarus Project, which brought Shepard back to life in "Mass Effect 2". Jarrahe was an abandoned space station seen in a "Mass Effect 2" side mission.

Val Royeaux was the capital city of the Orlesian Empire in the "Dragon Age" series.
6. "The Lair of the Shadow Broker" is often considered one of the best DLC packs in the entire series. In this "Mass Effect 2" DLC, Shepard got to work with another Spectre to hunt down the elusive Shadow Broker. What was this Spectre's name?

Answer: Tela Vasir

Tela Vasir was an asari Spectre who worked briefly with Shepard to find Liara T'Soni. Vasir was actually using Shepard to find Liara and kill her. Vasir worked often with the Shadow Broker to do her job, and had a vested interest in keeping him (or her, or them) alive. Going against Shepard did not work out well for her.

Nihlus Kryik was a turian Spectre seen at the beginning of "Mass Effect". He was supposed to evaluate Shepard as a candidate for Spectres, but was gunned down by Saren. Jondum Bau was a salarian Spectre that Shepard could work with on a side mission in "Mass Effect 3".

Zevran Arainai was a elf and companion in "Dragon Age: Origins". He was a professional assassin known as an Antivan Crow.
7. When creating a new Shepard, you have to select a history and a psych profile. Which psych profile had Shepard in a devastating fight against the batarians on Torfan, and also granted ten Renegade points when starting the game?

Answer: Ruthless

The Ruthless profile is the "Renegade" profile, and the War Hero is the "Paragon" profile, granting bonus Paragon points. The Sole Survivor profile is neutral, granting an equal number starting Paragon and Renegade points.

The three pre-service histories are similar, with Earthborn being Renegade, Spacer being Paragon, and Colonist being neutral.
8. In "Mass Effect 3", players finally got to set foot on a number of alien homeworlds, but not all. Players could go to the Volus homeworld and scan it, but not land. What was the name of the Volus homeworld?

Answer: Irune

The volus were short species who had to wear pressure suits when they left their homeworld. They often used trade and diplomacy to settle disputes, rather than violence. They were responsible for establishing the galactic credit as a common currency, and were a client race of the turians for military protection. It was a bit of a laugh and a shock when playable volus characters were introduced to the "Mass Effect 3" multiplayer with the "Retaliation" DLC.

Dekuuna was the homeworld of the elcor, and Kahje was the homeworld of the hanar, and adopted by many drell. Seheron was an island from the "Dragon Age" series.
9. In the "Mass Effect" series, Shepard only saw one gender of each species. It was not until the "Omega" DLC for "Mass Effect 3" that players finally got to see a female turian. What was her name?

Answer: Nyreen Kandros

In the first game, with the exception of humans, each species was represented by only one gender. The developers said this was because it would take too many resources for two versions of each species. This was partially hand-waved away for the salairans and krogan, whose women tended to stay on their home planets for social reason. Women of those species were seen in the base "Mass Effect 3" game. Tali was the only quarian at all in the first game, but in the second, male quarians were seen. The turians seemed to have a very egalitarian social system, so it's a bit of a mystery why a female turian was not seen until the penultimate "Mass Effect 3" DLC.

Nyreen Kandros was a biotic/tech user, and temporary squad member. Vetra Nyx was a female turian squad member for Ryder in "Mass Effect: Andromeda".

Rasaan was the first female Qunari seen in the "Dragon Age" series. She appeared in the comic "Those Who Speak".
10. In the the DLC "Arrival" for "Mass Effect 2", Shepard had to meet up with Admiral Hackett's old friend and stop the Reaper's imminent access to the mass relay network. What was the name of project leader and Hackett's friend?

Answer: Amanda Kenson

Dr. Amanda Kenson was a scientist, and leader of a operation simply called "the Project". She was captured by batarians, so Shepard's first objective was to free her, in one of the trilogy's rare stealth sections (arguably the only one). Dr. Kenson had discovered that the Reapers were about to arrive in the Viper system by studying an alien object called Object Rho. When she showed it to Shepard, the Commander realised that Dr. Kenson and her staff had already been influenced by the Reapers, which is why they had not executed their plan to destroy the mass relay in the system.

Gavin Archer was the lead scientist for Project Overlord, in a different "Mass Effect 2" DLC. Balak was the batarian antagonist of the "Bring Down the Sky" DLC for "Mass Effect".

Tallis was character from the "Mark of the Assassin" DLC for "Dragon Age 2". She was voiced by Felecia Day, who also provided her likeness for the character.
11. The first homeworld to be visited in the trilogy, even before Earth, was the krogan homeworld. What was the name of this desolate planet suffering the effects of a long-forgotten nuclear war?

Answer: Tuchanka

Tuchanka was the first homeworld seen in the trilogy, and the only one visited in "Mass Effect 2". Grunt and Mordin both had Loyalty Missions on Tuchanka, and it was where Shepard could meet Wrex again, if he survived the first game.

Sur'Kesh was the salarian homeworld, and Rannoch was the quarian homeworld, from which they had been driven away. Both were seen in "Mass Effect 3".

The Anderfels was a region on Thedas in the "Dragon Age" series.
12. In the "Pinnacle Station" DLC for the first game, Shepard competed in a series of simulated challenges. If Shepard managed to beat the final challenge offered by Ahern, the Admiral gave Shepard his retirement apartment on which planet?

Answer: Intai'sai

Ahern's final challenge was a recreation of a difficult battle he survived during the First Contact War against the turians. Shepard asked that all the simulator's safeties be turned off for the added realism.

After winning the scenario, Ahern gave Shepard his retirement home on the planet Intai'sai. It was a calm, quiet, lonely place for Shepard to get away to. Gameplay-wise, the only practical value was the ability to purchase high-quality items from passing freighters, but it would always be random, with chances of duplicates. It was one of the few ways to get quality omni-tools, bio-amps, and quarian armor. Shepard would get a much nicer apartment in the "Citadel" DLC for "Mass Effect 3".

Horizon was a human colony world seen in "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3". Amaranthine was an optional planet in "Mass Effect", and also the name of a city in "Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening".
13. Between the different games, the combat, biotic, and tech abilities were all reworked to change the flow of fights. Which tech ability was present in all three games, and remained largely unchanged, being an excellent way to remove shields from enemies?

Answer: Overload

Overload was one of the more offensive tech abilities in "Mass Effect", letting users inflict immediate damage to enemies' shields. It remained mostly unchanged in "Mass Effect 2", but its level 4 variant could bounce to a second target. In "Mass Effect 3", the ability to temporarily stun weaker enemies, and the possibility of a second bounce made it a very versatile power of any tech class.

Cryo Blast was cold based tech power in "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3". It could freeze enemies solid, and frozen enemies would take extra damage from weapons. Shockwave was a biotic power from "Mass Effect 2" and "Mass Effect 3" that could be used to control larger groups of weaker enemies.

Entropic Cloud was a magic spell from the "Dragon Age" series.
14. All three "Mass Effect" games were galaxy-spanning adventures. To get about, Shepard needed a ship. The first incarnation was destroyed, but when they built the bigger and better replacement, they still gave it the same name. What was the name of Commander Shepard's iconic ships?

Answer: Normandy

The Normandy was the first of her class of stealth frigates. Frigates in the Systems Alliance navy were named after famous battles, such as Hastings, and Iwo Jima.

The Serenity was the ship from the "Firefly" TV series, and its sequel, the movie "Serenity". The Millennium Falcon was the famous ship owned by Han Solo in the "Star Wars" series.

An Eluvian was an ancient elven device in the "Dragon Age" series.
15. Use the first letter of the previous fourteen questions to spell a key concept in the "Mass Effect" trilogy.

Answer: Indoctrination

One of the most interesting and important concepts in the "Mass Effect" series was indoctrination. It was a passive ability of the Reapers to bend the minds of those near it to become servants. The longer the subject was near the Reaper, the stronger the influence.

Indoctrination was introduced in the first game. Saren knew that the more a mind was indoctrinated, the less useful the subject became, eventually becoming a mindless husk. Saren thought he could stop Sovereign's indoctrination effects by proving himself more useful tool without it. He was mistaken, and succumbed to the Reaper's will.

Indoctrination was explored further in "Mass Effect 2", with a derelict (dead) Reaper having strange effects on the scientists who studied it too long. The scientists remarked that, "Even a dead god can dream."

In the last game, during the Reaper war, individuals who were once thought to be friendly would suddenly become hostile, or commit sabotage. It made for a very tense atmosphere.

Fans of the series were famously angry at the original ending of the trilogy, and a tenacious fan theory began to circulate. The Indoctrination Theory postulated that Shepard, the player character, was actually themselves indoctrinated for a large portion of the final installment.
