Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which series connects these four words and precedes all of them to form the names of games?

Answer: Wii

Arguably the best-selling game for the Nintendo Wii, the success of "Wii Sports" can be attributed to it being bundled with almost every console sold. It contains five different sports (boxing, bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball), each utilising the Wii's motion controls. "Wii Play" was the second game to be released, featuring nine different minigames. "Wii Fit" was next, and came bundled with the Balance Board peripheral.

This particular game is more fitness-focused, using the Balance Board to measure the player's weight and balance. "Wii Music", as its name suggests, allows the player to play a variety of musical instruments to create music.
2. What is the connection between these four developers?

Answer: They've all been based in Bellevue, Washington

5th Cell is the company behind the "Scribblenauts" series of games. Sucker Punch made a name for themselves with the "Sly Cooper" series and continued the success with the "InFamous" games. MMORPG enthusiasts may recognise ArenaNet, the studio behind the popular "Guild Wars" series. Bungie solidified their position as masters of the FPS genre with their hugely popular and influential "Halo" series on Xbox consoles. All these companies have or have had bases in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue in Washington, USA.
3. What, with regard to the "Halo" universe, connects these four names?

Answer: They're all names of vehicles

The Banshee (specifically the Type-26 ground-based model) is favoured by Covenant troops for its speed and agility, while the Ghost is their "rapid attack vehicle" armed with some fairly impressive weaponry. UNSC troops favours the M12 Force Application Vehicle, or Warthog, for its adaptability, giving rise to a number of M12 variants for different purposes.

The Scorpion, designated M808, is a force to be reckoned with, thanks to its superior firepower and strong armour plating.
4. What word connects these four words, and can follow each of them in titles of various video games?

Answer: Island

Commonly abbreviated to "Monkey Island", "The Secret of Monkey Island" is amongst the most popular point-and-click video games thanks to its fun gameplay and humourous story. "Dead Island" is the first in a series of survival horror video games centring around a zombie outbreak.

The Robert Louis Stevenson novel "Treasure Island" has spawned a few video game adaptations, most notably for the ZX Spectrum and PC. "Yoshi's Island" is the subtitle to the SNES game "Super Mario World 2" and puts players in control of Yoshi, who needs to escort a baby Mario to safety at the end of each level.
5. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Aperture Science

These are the (immortal) lyrics to "Still Alive", the end credits song in "Portal".

Written by Jonathan Coulton and performed by Ellen McLain as the AI overseer GLaDOS, "Still Alive" became an instant classic in the video game music scene. The song is essentially based around GLaDOS lamenting the success of her test subject, Chell, who completed all the test chambers and incinerated the robotic AI.
6. Which of these, with regard to the "Splinter Cell" series, would you expect to come fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Sixth: Exclude

These are definitions of titles of successive main games in the "Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell" series. 'Randomness has order' refers to the third game, "Chaos Theory", 'Undercover spy' refers to the fourth game, "Double Agent", and 'Strong belief' refers to the fifth game, "Conviction". The clue for the sixth game in the series, "Blacklist", would therefore be 'Exclude'.
7. What word would come fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Mask

These are the last words in successive "Professor Layton" games. Starting with the second game, "The Diabolical Box"/"Pandora's Box", and moving through the third, "The Unwound Future"/"The Lost Future", and the fourth, "The Last Specter"/"Spectre's Call", the fifth in the series and fourth in this sequence would be "The Miracle Mask".

The "Professor Layton" games are unique in the sense that the characters of the world seem to have a fascination with puzzles of all sorts. In order to proceed in the games, players need to solve puzzles posed by other characters, and other puzzles can be found hidden in the scenery.
8. What comes fourth in this sequence?

Answer: Left, right

This is the famous Konami code. The full sequence is: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A.

The code was first used in "Gradius" where it unlocks almost all the power-ups, but its popularity spread when it was included in "Contra" where it granted the player 30 lives. It has since been used to unlock secrets and hidden extras in a plethora of games, even ones not belonging to Konami.
9. These three quotes have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: which series connects these three items? (Spaces in the clues are not necessarily indicative of multiple words, nor do they necessarily indicate where a word ends or begins.)

Answer: Star Fox

These are all lines spoken by Peppy Hare throughout the "Star Fox" series. The lines in full are "Everybody, stay alert", "Use the boost to get through" and, perhaps the most memorable line, "Do a barrel roll".
10. These four names have each had their vowels removed and the consonants squashed up. If you can work out what each one is, you can answer this: which of these answers, also missing its vowels, would fit with these four names?

Answer: NGRD

These are the names of animal buddies in the original SNES "Donkey Kong Country" trilogy. The buddies listed in this question are RMB (Rambi, the rhinoceros), XPRSS (Expresso, the ostrich), LL (Ellie, the elephant), and SQWKS (Squawks, the parrot). The answer that fits this group is NGRD (Enguarde, the swordfish).
