Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is November of 1982, and you play as the passport control officer for a fictional dictatorial country. What is the name of this country?

Answer: Arstotzka

Arstotzka has just decided to allow limited entry into its previously-closed borders, and you've been selected to man the position of passport checker. All you ever see of your country is the little grey piece of land which serves as the border checkpoint between Arstotzka and Kolechia. Your job is to check as many people at the border as possible each day, ensure that they have the proper documentation as dictated at the start of that day, and admit as many as possible without breaking any of the rules.

This is way harder than it sounds, not only because the day flies by really fast, but because of the people and situations you will meet while manning this checkpost.
2. Fill in the blank: The border checkpoint is an opening in the tall concrete wall separating East and West _____.

Answer: Grestin

This wall symbolizes the Berlin Wall, which separated East and West Berlin for over two decades before finally being torn down in 1989. And as in Berlin, people will frequently attempt to cross the wall illegally, often leading to them being shot by the guards.

However, some of these people will actually try (and often succeed) in making terrorist attacks against the guards on the Arstotzkan side of the border. This is grave news, primarily because it tends to cut the working day short and thus prevent you from getting any more money from processing entrants.
3. What class of apartment are you given at the start of the game?

Answer: Class 8

Each day, you will need to pay rent, heating and food bills for your entire family, which comes right out of the budget you've earned that day. If you can't afford to pay, you must decide whether to cut the heating or food bills - potentially leading to family members starving or freezing to death. Your objective, of course, is to keep everyone alive, but this can be very hard to manage on your first go at the game.

Occasionally, you will get the opportunity to upgrade your apartment from Class 8 to Class 7 and so on until Class 5. Unfortunately, all this does is raise your rent! (also, getting to Class 5 awards you an achievement badge. Yipee.)
4. What is the name of the old man who repeatedly attempts to cross the border with all sorts of combinations of documentation - often illegally?

Answer: Jorji Costava

Jorji will first arrive with no papers at all, and will later show up with a passport that couldn't possibly look faker. If you keep denying his entry, he will eventually arrive with proper documentation. However, by that point it should already be obvious that he probably shouldn't enter the country - and in fact he repeatedly uses this documentation to try and smuggle things in. Even if he is arrested every time, he will keep coming back (talking about how easy it is to bribe the guards).

Eventually, Jorji may be able to set you up with a forger who can make Obristani passports. Hmmm, I wonder what that could be useful for.
5. What is the name of the organization committed to overthrowing the government?

Answer: EZIC

EZIC is an organization of patriotic Arstotzkans who are displeased with the dictatorship and wish to overthrow it. They are not nearly as violent as the terrorists from Kolechia who will often attack the checkpoint, choosing instead to covertly manipulate the checkpoint (by enlisting your help) to have agents and equipment infiltrated into the country.

Helping EZIC is somewhat difficult and quite dangerous to you and your family, but if you can avoid the danger, there might be a reward somewhere along the line...
6. At the start of the game, you have two stamps labeled "DENY" and "APPROVE". At some point in the game, a third stamp is added. What is its label?

Answer: REASON

The "Reason of Denial" must be used together with the "DENY" stamp whenever an entrant has provided faulty documentation or has failed to provide explanations for non-obvious discrepancies. Failure to stamp a passport properly will net you a citation (costing you $5 per failure) just like a wrongful denial or approval would.

This stamp only appears partway through the game, making your bureaucratic work just that tad bit harder than it already was.
7. Which of these reasons is sufficient - without any further checks required - to deny someone entry during the later parts of the game?

Answer: Different passport numbers on two documents.

Even if things don't seem to match between the documentation and the entrant him/herself (or what they said), it is always necessary to double-check before approving or denying entry. Failure to do so may get you a citation (and a deduction in pay) if you guessed wrong.

However, if an entrant's passport number is listed incorrectly on any document, you may deny that entrant immediately. Note however that you will always still need to correlate the inconsistently with your inspection tool first, since you need to stamp a "REASON" on the passport.
8. Which weapon is unlocked first?

Answer: Tranquilizer gun

The tranquilizer gun is handed to you after terrorist attacks against the checkpoint become a serious problem. You are tasked with actually shooting anyone who tries to get over the wall, and will need to do so very quickly (unlocking the gun cabinet first, then pulling out the tranquilizer gun, aiming carefully, and shooting the man down). If you fire accurately, you get a nice bonus to your paycheck. Fail to stop a terrorist, and he WILL kill one or more guards - which could have a serious negative effect on your game later on.
9. On day 30, a man will want you to confiscate another man's passport. He wants to infiltrate the country using that passport, so that he could kill that other man. Why?

Answer: The other man killed his daughter.

The game contains a whole lot of morally questionable situations presented to you by the people who pass through the checkpoint (as well as some other characters who visit your booth). You'll need to decide for yourself whether to go along with anything, and each such event could have serious ramifications (for good or for bad) later in the game.

The effects are rarely immediately noticeable, but the story will develop based on your decisions!
10. How many different endings does "Papers, Please" have?

Answer: Twenty

"Papers, Please" has no fewer than twenty different possible endings, which are determined by the actions you take during the game. Allowing certain people in that you should not otherwise, accepting items and/or bribes, collaborating with various ploys, these could all affect your end-game.

There are, however, at least two "favorable" end-games to strive for which are exceptionally hard to attain. If you're not happy with your ending, why not play the game once more?
