Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of the game you can select a homeport controlled by a governor, which who you can initially communicate with to gain missions. Which of the following nations has the most governors?

Answer: Spain

Spain has five governor-controlled ports: Cartagena, Margarita, Vera Cruz, Havana and Belize. England, Holland and France only have one port controlled by a governor. This mirrors the dominance Spain had over the Caribbean at the time the game is set as they also have the most towns as well on the game's map.
2. At the start of the game, you can select a starting asset that involves some money and a ship. Which of the following is NOT a starting asset you can select?

Answer: Corvette / 10,000 gold pieces

At the start of the game, you have a choice of three ships you can select. The Pinnace is the smallest ship with only eight cannons, a small cargo capacity and crew, but comes with the most gold pieces to equip the ship and pay for goods to be traded at other ports.

The next starting asset is the sloop, with 14 cannons, a slightly larger crew and cargo capacity. With this ship, you only get 40,000 gold pieces. The final ship you can select is a brig, with 16 cannons, a bigger crew and cargo capacity, but only comes with 30,000 gold pieces as a starting asset.
3. Which of the following does NOT provide a5% boost to your captain's performance?

Answer: Navigation

There are four different features in the free play mode that you can give your captain as a boost. Charisma gives your captain a boost in crew morale and reputation in battle. Swordsmanship gives your captain a boost in the damage he can inflict in duels with other captains, pirates and town commanders. Accuracy increases the amount of damage your ship can cause to another in battle. Finally, Trading Experience gives you a better deal when trading goods you have either captured or brought.
4. As you guide your ship around the map, you will find military convoys belonging to each nation. These convoys hunt pirates, attack other military convoys in times of war and will even attack your convoy if it is weak. Which nation, though, has the biggest ship, with the most crew and cannons?

Answer: England / Ship of the Line

England has the most powerful ship in the Ship of The Line, though other military conveys may also obtain this ship by capturing it. The Ship of the Line has a crew of 200 and 50 cannons. It always has the fast speed in a straight line with the wind behind it. However, it is slow in shallow water and is not as manoeuvrable as other ships.
5. You can obtain missions from the governor of the homeport you have selected and other governors, depending on your relationship with them. Who gives you permission to capture enemy towns at times of war?

Answer: The viceroy

In times of war, if you weaken an enemy's strength by destroying or capturing their military convoys, you can approach the viceroy of the nation who has issued you with a mission to capture an enemy town for his country. However, you need to be on friendly terms with the nation you are fighting for and hold the rank of boson or higher.

Once you have captured two towns for the viceroy he will give you a town and some land of your own. The amount of land you own in the town grows until you have captured eight towns for the viceroy. In total, you can gain 16 towns by fighting for various nations, though this involves changing sides and capturing/recapturing towns for these nations.
6. Many of the goods that can be bought, sold or captured can be found in the various towns on the maps where they are produced. Which goods have to be brought in via transport convoys?

Answer: Tools, wine, spices

Transport convoys bring in goods from Europe along with some settlers. The goods that are imported are tools, wine (portrayed in the trade icon as grapes) and spices. Once they have unloaded their cargo at the various governor/viceroy towns, they pick up dyes, tobacco, coffee and cocoa to take back to Europe.

In times of war, you can attack these convoys to capture ships, goods and settlers. Other goods are produced at the various towns found on the map, with garments, rope, rum and meat produced at the governor and viceroy towns.
7. In times of war, you can obtain a document from the governor of your homeport (or other governors depending on your relations with that nation) to attack enemy ships and towns. What is the name of this document?

Answer: A Letter of Marque

Letters of Marque (and reprisal) could often be obtained from various governments or, in the case of "Port Royale 2", from the various governors to capture enemy ships and their goods on behalf of a country. In essence, it was a form of legalised piracy, issued on behalf of country from where the letter was obtained.

Privateers carrying a Letter of Marque were granted certain immunities if caught, such as being immune from being hanged for piracy, though this was not always the case if the letter was not recognised as being issued by a legitimate government or monarchy.

Surprisingly, the United States of America can still issue Letters of Marque to individuals if it is in the best interest of the country, though in practice the Letter of Marque was discontinued after the 1859 Paris Declaration, ending the practice of individuals attacking property belonging to another country.
8. Whilst travelling around the map, players may encounter pirates, with names of real pirates that roamed the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Which of the following pirates in the game is the odd one out?

Answer: Andrew Anne Bonny

The odd one out is Andrew Anne Bonny. However, there was a female pirate called Anne Bonny. When ahe was captured, she was spared from being hanged because she was pregnant. Henry Morgan was one of the most successful of pirates who actually lived to retirement; this was mainly due to the fact he worked with the British. Edward Teach was better known as the notorious pirate Blackbeard. Teach finally met his end when he was killed by a Royal Navy crew led by Lieutenant Maynard who attacked his ship.
9. In each governor town there is a number of people you can visit. Which one will you not find in the viceroy or other towns not belonging to governors?

Answer: The governor's daughter

The governors daughter can only be found at the governor's mansion, and even then only if your relationship with a particular country is friendly. Initially you can visit her, but after a few visits, you will receive a marriage proposal. The governor's daughter will give you certain information about prices for goods and pirates. Should you not visit her often, she will either be abducted or try to leave you. This then involves having to rescue her.

The treasurer will provide funds or request funds when a player has sufficient wealth. The general will request funds for harbour defence and soldiers.
The priest will bless your crew, ask for a donation or allow prayer.
10. When attacking another ship, what is NOT a type of ammunition you can use?

Answer: Artillery shells

There are three types of ammunition that can used to attack other ships.
Bar shot destroys rigging and sails, slowing down a ship and causing minor damage.
Grape shot kills the ship's crew, allowing a ship to be boarded more easily, and also causing minor damage. Cannon balls cause major damage to a ship and are best used for sinking ships or attacking town defences. However, capturing a ship has greater rewards since the ship, cannons and any goods on board can be sold.
