Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these 'Fire Emblem' games was the first to be released in countries outside Japan (as well as in Japan itself)?

Answer: Fire Emblem / Fire Emblem: The Sword of Flame

Prior to 'Fire Emblem', the games were exclusive to Japan. It wasn't until the Nintendo GameCube game 'Super Smash Bros. Melee', which featured 'Fire Emblem' characters Marth and Roy, that Nintendo realised its popularity outside Japan and decided to localise the series for international release. 'Fire Emblem' was released between 2003 and 2004 across the world for the Game Boy Advance.

The success of this tactical-RPG series has since grown immensely, with previously Japanese-only games getting localised and released via Nintendo's Virtual Console.
2. 'Pokemon FireRed', a remake of the original 'Pokemon Red' game, followed 'Ruby', 'Sapphire' and 'Emerald' in which 'Pokemon' game generation?

Answer: Generation III

While the original Game Boy 'Pokemon' games were played in black and white, the 'FireRed' and 'LeafGreen' remakes reimagined the region of Kanto using Generation III's Game Boy Advance assets, injecting a much-needed dose of colour. The mechanics stayed pretty much the same (then again, they haven't really changed drastically through the series) but opened up the ability for Generation I Pokemon to be added to 'Ruby' and 'Sapphire' Pokedexes via 'Emerald'. 'FireRed' and 'LeafGreen' paved the way for more remade games - Generation IV on the Nintendo DS saw the Game Boy Color games 'Gold' and 'Silver' get an updated look for 'HeartGold' and 'SoulSilver', respectively.
3. Which downloadable indie video game puts players in front of a fireplace and lets them buy items from a catalogue so they can be burnt?

Answer: Little Inferno

'Little Inferno' is a quirky game where the only real objective is, as I mentioned before, burning things. For the most part, you'll be sat in front of a fireplace with a catalogue. Purchased items from the catalogue are delivered straight to you to chuck into the fireplace, which will then produce coins or other goodies upon their incineration.

More coins means you can buy more things to burn to get more coins. Chucking in special combinations of items will yield bigger rewards, but it's up to you to determine what these combinations are.

A loose narrative ties the game together, suggesting that 'Little Inferno' is a metaphor for repetition and wasting time.
4. Located atop Death Mountain, the Fire Temple is home to the fiery dragon Volvagia in which 'Legend of Zelda' game for the Nintendo 64?

Answer: Ocarina of Time

When Link becomes an adult and returns to Death Mountain, home of the Gorons, he is able to access the crater at the top of the mountain and, subsequently, the Fire Temple. This dungeon's key item is the Megaton Hammer, used primarily to activate switches and break open rocks.

As always, the key item plays a key role in the dungeon's boss fight, and Volvagia needs to be stunned with the Megaton Hammer before Link can damage him. The Bolero of Fire, taught to Link when he first enters the Death Mountain Crater, will warp him to the entrance of the Fire Temple whenever he plays it.
5. In which video game do bonfires allow players to rest, replenish their health, level up their attributes and act as checkpoints for players to return to when they are almost inevitably killed by monsters?

Answer: Dark Souls

Undoubtedly one of the seventh generation's hardest games, 'Dark Souls' is an action-RPG whereby players control a cursed human who can switch between different states of existence (ie, between hollow and human) by consuming humanity. Being human allows you to bring forth allies to aid you, but, if you're playing online, will also give your world the chance to be invaded by other human players. Bonfires are important features of the world of Lordran, as they will act as checkpoints for you to respawn at when you're killed. You can also rest, recover your health, refill your estus flasks, repair your armour and assign your skill points at a bonfire, but this will cause all the enemies in the area that you had previously defeated to come back to life.
6. Hailfire Peaks, a half-ice, half-lava world, featured in which Nintendo 64 video game?

Answer: Banjo-Tooie

As its name suggests, Hailfire Peaks is a world made of two distinct halves - a fiery, lava side and a wintry, icy side. The fire side was once destined to be part of 'Banjo-Kazooie' in the form of Mount Fire Eyes, but when the developers realised they didn't have time to include it, it was reimagined as Hailfire Peaks in the sequel.

A pair of dragons, Chilly Willy and Chilli Billi, guard the very highest peaks on their respective sides. Past characters from 'Banjo-Kazooie' can be found in this world, including Boggy the polar bear (who first appeared in Freezeezy Peaks) and Gobi the camel (who had a few unfortunate run-ins with the bear and bird in Gobi's Valley and Click Clock Wood).
7. Ragefire Chasm is one of the earliest dungeon instances in which popular MMORPG?

Answer: World of Warcraft

Accessible from the orc city of Orgrimmar, Ragefire Chasm is a straightforward, linear instance. RFC (a common abbreviation used by players) underwent changes after the 'Cataclysm' expansion. Before this, the instance was filled with aggressive orc and trogg forces and was relatively simple, particularly for new or low-level players. Post-'Cataclysm', the dungeon level was raised, while in 'Mists of Pandaria', it was lowered again and different foes were introduced to the instance.
8. Typically, 'Pokemon' games feature three starter Pokemon - one Grass-type, one Water-type and one Fire-type. Which of these Pokemon is definitely not a Fire-type starter Pokemon?

Answer: Pikachu

Pikachu, despite being a starter Pokemon in 'Pokemon Yellow', is an Electric-type. Charmander was featured in Generation I, evolving into Charmeleon an Charizard. Tepig first appeared in Generation V, becoming Pignite and Emboar when reaching certain levels. Fennekin debuted in Generation VI and evolves into Braixen and Delphox.

While these starter Pokemon all start as a Fire-type, they almost always end up with a different dual-type when they reach their final evolution like Charizard being Fire/Flying (though it can mega-evolve into Fire/Dragon), Emboar being Fire/Fighting (just like Generation III's Blaziken) and Delphox being Fire/Psychic.
9. Mario, of 'Super Mario' fame (obviously), can throw fireballs at his enemies by collecting which botanical item?

Answer: Fire Flower

Fire Flowers feature frequently in the 2D 'Mario' platformers but didn't appear in a 3D game until 'Super Mario Galaxy' in 2007. A simple enough power-up, the Fire Flower allows Mario to chuck balls of fire at his foes. This can be particularly useful against spiny enemies or during underwater segments where it's not convenient or safe or even possible to simply bonk them on the head with a swift jump.
10. Din's Fire is a divine spell given to the protagonist in 'The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword'.

Answer: False

Din's Fire's first appearance was in the Nintendo 64 title 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time'. When used, it surrounds Link with fire, allowing him to damage foes, burn away webs, or perform any other action that requires the use of fire or fire arrows. Din's Fire, along with Nayru's Love and Farore's Wind, are given to Link by the Great Fairy of Magic when he visits various Fairy Fountains across Hyrule.
