Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let us hearken back to the very beginning. Of course, Mario started off as Jumpman in the "Donkey Kong Arcade" in 1981. Many moons later, the original "Donkey Kong Arcade" appeared in a later Nintendo game. It was required to beat the original arcade to beat this game. Which game have I described?

Answer: "Donkey Kong 64"

Trying to beat "Donkey Kong 64" with 100% completion could drive some players bananas. As gamers have known since 1999, however, in order to beat the game at all, it was required to obtain the Rareware Coin (from defeating "Jetpac" in Cranky's Hut) and the Nintendo Coin(from defeating the original "Super Mario Bros." in Frantic Factory. "Donkey Kong 64" was a true collectathon.

In fact, it had more items to collect than any game in history. Despite this fact, the game seemed to go really easy on the little kids, requiring you to collect only 100 out of the games 201 Golden Bananas. Nevertheless, the game was a challenge exclusively for the true blue video-gaming enthusiast who was willing to go the extra mile and get 101% completion. And the game rewarded you for this achievement, granting you a nice secret ending; a wonderful reward for video gamers in those carefree days of the pre-9/11 world.
2. What color were the large, impenetrable bubbles that attacked Mario in the Ghost Houses of "Super Mario World"?

Answer: Green

These bubbles could not be defeated. Mario could not hurt them, but they could hurt him. Touching one meant instant death. His only option, therefore, was to simply avoid them. Even the power of invincibility could not deter them. Other frights Mario encountered in these Ghost Houses included Eeries, Boos, Big Boos, and Fishin' Boos.
3. How many Warp Zones are in the game "Mario Bros."?

Answer: None

In "Mario Bros." (1983), there aren't any. "Super Mario Bros." (1985), however, introduced them. "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels" contains Warp Zones that returns Mario to early Worlds in which he already completed. Mario is sometimes given the ultimatum to jump into a pit to his demise (and just lose a life) in lieu of jumping down into such a pipe.
4. From "Mario Party", how many Stars must the player collect to open up the "Eternal Star" board?

Answer: One hundred

The amount of Stars needed is one hundred to play on this unique board. Bowser has split up a star, and that is the playing field. It is the only board in any Mario game where the player must role a die and outroll a Koopa Kid to win a star. When gathering the hundred stars needed to unlock this board, a good idea is to play on the "Yoshi's Tropical Island" board with four players.

After the player beats "Eternal Star", the end credits will roll. At the end of these, all the characters stand on a star and the narrator yells, "We are the Superstar!".

This indicates that they are all the Superstar in their own special ways.
5. Hi! I am the cloud who grew very large when I was fed a red apple and bounced Mario or one of his friends into orbit. What's my name?

Answer: Cyrrus

In "Super Paper Mario", I was the baby cloud who lived in the Overthere. Back when I so wanted to grow, I recalled to you stories I had heard of a man who grew just be eating a mushroom. When I was fed a red apple, I bounced the character you were playing as all the way into the cosmos.

He or she then fell back down to a red door high up above me. If you did not have an apple in your inventory, there was a blue block to the left of me which would quickly give you access back to the fruit-rich area of Overthere Stair.

In the area I bounced you to, Luigi could collect a Zombie Schroom card. You went a little ways east, and chapter 7-3 came to an end.
6. What are the names of Wigglers who have gone through metamorphosis?

Answer: Flutters

The correct answer is "Flutters." Originally, they appeared in "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" in the level "GO! GO! MARIO!". Normal jumping on them or tossing an egg at them merely angered them. They turned red and swooped down on Yoshi. Yoshi could defeat them for good, however, by swallowing or Ground Pounding them.

When they first appeared many moons ago, they were called Wiggler Flies. It was not until the "Mario Party" series their names were changed to "Flutters". They appeared in capsules in "Mario Party 5" through "Mario Party 7".

They had the ability to fly the player to the Star, making them most valuable commodities. They were also in "Mario Party Advance". Finally, in "Mario Power Tennis", Wiggler transformed into a Flutter after winning a match.
7. While we're on Wigglers, Fuzzy Wigglers appeared in one game and one game only (and even then, in only one level). Which game was this?

Answer: "Yoshi's Story"

Fuzzy Wigglers are from "Yoshi's Story". They are seen only in the very early stage, "Surprise!". Fuzzy Wigglers are covered in green fur and, as opposed to regular Wigglers who have flowers on their heads, they have mushrooms. They can be defeated if Yoshi jumps on all five of its segments. Jumping on them does not enrage them, they just walk on as usual.

When beaten, they sink into the earth and leave melons behind.
8. What accent did O'Chunks speak with in "Super Paper Mario"?

Answer: Irish

His name, "O'Chunks", ought to give this one away. He is a bearded Irish monster and one of Count Bleck's minions. Mario fights the buff brute four times throughout the events of "Super Paper Mario".
9. "Luigi's Purple Coins" is widely considered the hardest level in "Super Mario Galaxy". Which Galaxy contained this infamous level?

Answer: The Toy Time Galaxy

"Luigi's Purple Coins" the level in which Mario needs to collect 100/150 Prple Coins on an 8-bit Luigi-looking platform. Mario has three minutes to do so. Flip Tiles, Dark Matter, and Shrinking Platforms are the obstacles that make this Star be considered the hardest one to collect in the history of Mario.

As an expert platformer with a lifetime of experience, it only took me four tries. So I really didn't understand a lot of these "near impossible" rants I read. However, when I played the level again as Luigi, it took me over a dozen tries.

This is almost certainly due to Luigi's lackluster stopping power. Therefore, "Luigi's Purple Coins" as Luigi is indeed an indelible challenge.
10. In "Paper Mario", Mario was given the following riddle: "Truth lies not only in the eyes; sometimes even walls may lie." The understanding of this riddle was absolutely imperative to finding me. Who am I?

Answer: Madam Merlar

Merle, the son of Merlon, gives Mario the riddle. After giving Mario the scarf (which Mario used along with the bucket to gain access to Shiver Mountain), he gives him the riddle. Mario discovered the meaning of the riddle when he reached Shiver Mountain. One of the walls inside was just an illusion. Mario walked right through the wall in the freezing, icy area and met Madam Merlar.

She is merely a spirit, a deceased ancestor of the fortune tellers Mario meets during his quest. After a long winded story à la Merlon, she gives Mario the Star Stone. Mario uses it to access the Crystal Palace atop the mountains summit and get closer to his goal of defeating the Crystal King and rescuing Kalmar.
11. From "Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars", who was the star warrior that took the form of a wooden doll?

Answer: Geno

"Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" is a bonafide classic beyond reproach. Geno's real name is impossible to pronounce, so he gives Mario a pronounceable one. No one to this day know who the "higher authority" was who sent him to aid Mario in restoring peace to the world.
12. After "Paper Mario", Jr. Troopa is never seen in another game.

Answer: False

Jr. Troopa was a nasty little brat. He used to bully Goomba kids out of the park in Goomba village. He fought Mario a total of six times throughout the events of "Paper Mario", in Goomba Village, Pleasant Path, Forever Forest, Toad Town Harbor, Shiver Snowfield, and last of all, Bowser's Castle. Before the final battle commences, he takes care of the Koopa Bros. for Mario.

He is seen very briefly in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door". The movie star Zip Toad, whom Mario met on the excess express, send Mario an e-mail If you look close enough, you will notice Jr. Troopa with his spike and wings flying in the background.
13. "Super Mario 64" actually was not the first 3D Mario game with Mario as the main protagonist. Which game was the first?

Answer: "Mario Clash"

"Mario Clash" is a very good game to me. It was one of the few titles released for the Virtual Boy. It was a vast improvement over the original game "Mario Bros." (not "Super Mario Bros."). Mario threw Koopa Shells to knock enemies off their perch.

Despite having good titles, such as this, "Mario Tennis", "Virtual Boy Wario Land", the Virtual Boy was a miserable flop. Wario/Gameboy Gunpei Yokoi was undeservedly disgraced as a result.
14. Of the original three games in the "Mario & Luigi" series, which title was Fawful absent from?

Answer: Fawful appeared in all three original titles of the "Mario & Luigi" series

Fawful, the eccentric Beanish nutcase, appeared in all three games of the series, which are as hilarious as they are to play. He was the evil cackling with Cackletta's assistant in the original "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga" from 2003. His smallest role in any game he was ever in was in "Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time".

In that game, he ran "Fawful's Bean 'n' Badge", but not without warnings of his imminent return. And of course, he was the main antagonist of "Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story". Mario faced a Sammer Guy in "Super Paper Mario" by the name of "Mustard of Doom", referencing his most famous quote.
15. We would have every reason to believe that Merlon from "Paper Mario" is the same Merlon in "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door" as well as "Super Paper Mario." However, a secret I told you in one of the games from the "Paper Mario" series casts grave doubt on this. Who am I?

Answer: Wonky

"Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door"'s Wonky imparted the following secret to Mario for a price: "About Merlon on the east side of Rogueport and Merluvlee underground... Ol' Wonky hears they're from a strange tribe that names people by profession. So, for example, if someone did the same work as Merlon, they'd have the same name... So there could be Merlons all over. Don't you find that strange? Wonky does!" Wonky resides in the Rogueport Sewers.

He is a funny looking plump creature with swirling glasses and a blue vest.
