Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mr. Briney, the notorious sailor, has a Pokémon named Peeko. What kind of Pokémon is Peeko?

Answer: Female Wingull

Mr. Briney and Peeko live in a small house just west of Petalburg City. Whenever the player wishes to set sail, Mr. Briney says, "Anchors aweigh! Peeko, we're setting sail, my darling!"
2. After the player obtains the ability to use both Surf and Dive, he/she can explore the Abandoned Ship on Route 108. There, the player can find a certain Key Item that can be traded to Captain Stern. What is this item?

Answer: Scanner

By using Dive in a certain location inside the Abandoned Ship, the player can find an underwater passage that leads to a more secluded area of the ship. Here, the player can find the Scanner. Captain Stern is at the Slateport Harbor and will trade either a Deep Sea Tooth or a Deep Sea Scale (player's choice) for the Scanner.

The Blue Orb is something else entirely; it is used to awaken or capture either Groudon or Kyogre, depending on the game.
3. Which of these is not located on an island?

Answer: New Mauville

New Mauville, even though the player can only reach it by using Surf, is in fact on a peninsula underneath the Cycling Road. Mt. Pyre is on a large island on Route 122, while the Battle Tower is on a remote island only reachable by ship or Fly and the Sootopolis Gym is on a small island in the center of the city.
4. Another island question! How many towns/cities in Hoenn are completely surrounded by water?

Answer: Five

The five towns/cities are Dewford Town, Pacifidlog Town, Mossdeep City, Sootopolis City, and Ever Grande City. Technically, Pacifidlog Town isn't on an island, but it is surrounded by water.
5. After beating the Elite Four, the player's father gives him/her a pass to ride on which ferry?

Answer: S.S. Tidal

While all of these ships do exist in the Pokémon games, the S.S. Tidal is the one that takes the player between Slateport City, Lilycove City, and the Battle Tower. The S.S. Cactus is the Abandoned Ship on Route 108, the S.S. Anne is a boat that stops in Vermilion City (Kanto) every year, and the S.S. Aqua takes the player between Kanto and Johto in Generations II and IV (Johto only).
6. Team Magma/Aqua steals a submarine from Lilycove Harbor.

Answer: False

The submarine is actually stolen from Slateport City. After the events at Mt. Pyre, the Team Magma/Aqua takes off for Slateport and after the submarine is hijacked the player must infiltrate the team's hideout in Lilycove City.
7. "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald" also include an interesting water feature: tides! The Shoal Cave, north of Mossdeep City, is the only place in Hoenn affected by the changing tides. Which of these items can only be found at high tide?

Answer: Shoal Shell

The Shoal Salt and Shoal Shell are two items found at low and high tides, respectively. If the player takes four of each to the man standing just inside the cave, he will turn them into a Shell Bell, which restores a Pokémon's HP equal to 1/8 of the damage dealt to the opponent in battle.

The Focus Band is only available during Low Tide - The man who gives it to the player is standing in a cave that is flooded during high tide.
8. Which of these places does NOT require the use of Dive to access the first time?

Answer: Shoal Cave

The submarine stolen by Team Magma/Aqua is the team's way of getting to the Seafloor Cavern, but the player must use Dive to get there. The Sealed Chamber's only entrance is a small Dive area on Route 134, and the only way of getting to Sootopolis City (other than using Fly after the first visit) is by the use of Dive. The Shoal Cave only requires Surf.
9. Thanks to the help of currents in the water, the player can take a very speedy one-way trip from Pacifidlog Town to Slateport City. How many Routes are covered by these currents?

Answer: Three

Between Pacifidlog Town and Slateport City are Routes 132, 133, and 134. Among the currents are several Trainers, a few items, and the entrance to the Sealed Chamber.
10. To prevent the player from traveling to Mossdeep City too early, there is a Team Magma/Aqua grunt training three of a certain Pokémon in the waters east of Lilycove City. What Pokémon is he training?

Answer: Wailmer

The Pokémon are unidentifiable by sight, and just appear as Pokémon using Surf with no Trainer as a passenger. However, if spoken to, the Magma/Aqua grunt training them says, "There! Wailmer! Leap out of the water now!"
11. Which of these Pokémon cannot be found while using Dive?

Answer: Tentacool

Clamperl and Chinchou are both found commonly underwater, while Relicanth is more rare. Tentacool is found by either fishing or using Surf.
12. The Oceanic Museum is in Slateport City.

Answer: True

The Oceanic Museum is where the player must go to find Captain Stern and deliver the Devon Goods on his/her first visit to Slateport City. The entrance fee is 50 Pokémon Dollars, including the first mandatory visit.
13. How many Water-type HM moves are available in "Ruby", "Sapphire", and "Emerald"?

Answer: Three

The three moves are Surf (HM03), Waterfall (HM07), and Dive (HM08). Surf has been an HM since Generation I, Waterfall since Generation II, and Dive replaced Whirlpool (HM06 in "Gold", "Silver", and "Crystal") as the third Water-type HM.
14. What are the two Water-type Pokémon required to find Regirock, Regice, and Registeel?

Answer: Relicanth & Wailord

In "Ruby" and "Sapphire", the Braille translation reads, "First comes Relicanth, last comes Wailord." In "Emerald", the translation reads, "First comes Wailord, last comes Relicanth." The message is instructing the player to put one of the two Pokémon, depending on the game, in the first slot in the player's party and the other in the last slot.
15. The huge ocean on the east side of Hoenn is... well, huge! But somewhere in this vast sea, there is a dive area that will take the player to a certain city that includes the eighth Gym. On what Route is this city located?

Answer: Route 126

In a nutshell: Sootopolis City is on Route 126 on the western side of the ocean, Mossdeep City is in the north, and Route 125 includes the Shoal Cave and is north of Mossdeep. The Seafloor Cavern is about level with Ever Grande City in the east, and Routes 127 and 128 connect Mossdeep, Sootopolis, Ever Grande, and the cavern. Confused yet?
