Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is special about Ascension Day in Germany?

Answer: All of these

The Ascension is the celebration of Jesus ascent to Heaven, on the 39th day after Easter. Because it's a holiday, you can see fathers on their special day walking around, pushing little carts or baby carriages all decorated full of beer (no babies!) and having a good time!
2. Soup is the last course of a meal in what country?

Answer: China

If you are hungry for soup in China, you will have to wait until the end of the meal, or have it for breakfast, when it is also served.
3. What is "sannakji"?

Answer: A Korean octopus delicacy

In Korea, they serve live octopus, with its tentacles chopped up, but still wriggling and squirming on the plate. No doubts about the seafood being fresh!
4. In what country you can see people attending mass standing outside the doors of the church?

Answer: Poland

Under Communist rule, churches were so crowded that people were left outside, hearing the service on loudspeakers. Now it is no longer necessary, but the habit persists.
5. Which one of the following is NOT a common behavior in a Japanese home?

Answer: To go barefoot

When you enter a Japanese home, you leave your shoes just inside the door and switch to house slippers. But when entering the bathroom, you change into bathroom slippers. And on the tatami (straw floor mats) only socks are allowed.
Hygienically it makes sense, but to a newcomer it is frustrating to discover you are always forgetting to switch to the proper footwear, and it takes time to get adjusted.
6. In rural Turkey, you might spot a clay pot balanced on the corner of the roof of a house. What does it mean?

Answer: There is a marriageable daughter in the house.

This was before Facebook. Maybe now they do not do it anymore!
7. Because of their wardrobe, chimney sweeps are a showy group in what country?

Answer: Germany

They are supposed to bring good luck, and you can see them sometimes on their bicycles around town, all dressed in black with brass buttons and wearing a black top hat.

Until recently, they enjoyed a monopoly, but last year the European Union changed the rules, and now they will have to face competition.
8. Why will you never be invited at a sit down dinner for 13 in Italy?

Answer: It is a reminder of the Last Supper.

This is mostly true in Southern Italy. The number 13 is actually considered lucky there, number 17 is the unlucky one. There were 13 people at the table for the Last Supper, and you know what happened then!
9. How do French people feel about sending Christmas cards?

Answer: They don't send any.

In France it is very common to exchange New Year's cards and wishes instead of Christmas ones, and they have the whole month of January to do it. Maybe it takes some of the stress away from the holidays!
10. What is the "proper" way to eat peas in England?

Answer: Mashed with a fork

If you follow etiquette, you mash the peas with the back of your fork and eat them with the fork held upside down, tines pointing downward. It seems like a good idea, so next time you are having dinner at Buckingham Palace, you will not have to chase the little devils around your plate or even under the table in front of the Queen!
