Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Ears: "Moderately sized, filbert-shaped, set on low, and hanging flat to cheek. Thin and velvety in texture; covered with short fine hair with fringe of whitish silky hair at tip." Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Colour: "Jet black and rich mahogany tan distributed as follows: on head, muzzle tanned to nose, nose and nasal bone jet black. Small tan spot on each cheek and above each eye, under-jaw and throat tanned with distinct tan V. Legs from knee downward tanned with exception of toes which shall be pencilled with black, a distinct black mark (thumbmark) immediately above feet. Inside hindlegs tanned but divided with black at stifle joint. Under tail tanned, vent tanned by marking as narrow as possible so that it is covered by tail. A slight tan mark on each side of chest. Tan outside hindlegs, commonly called breeching, is undesirable. In all cases black should not run into tan or vice versa, but division between colours clearly defined." Hint

Skull nearly flat and cheek bones not protruding. Foreface strongly constructed and deep throughout. Skull and foreface of equal length. Slight but distinct stop between skull and foreface just in front of eye. Nose large and, in profile, line from nose towards chin appears to slope backwards.' Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Head and skull: "Forehead well domed; head covered with very soft, silky hair not confined to mere 'topknot'."

Answer: Dandie Dinmont Terrier

The Dandie Dinmont was bred in the border between Scotland and England. Their name comes from a character in Sir Walter Scott's 'Guy Mannering' who kept the breed. The D.D. is the only breed to be named after a fictional character.
2. Coat: "Soft and silky. Neither woolly nor wiry. Loosely waved or curly, but if curly, curls large, light and loose. The coat should not stand off but flow and fall naturally. Coat abundant all over body and especially profuse on head and legs."

Answer: Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier originated in Ireland. There are four different types of coat - Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English and American. They are considered to be a hypoallergenic breed.
3. Characteristics: "There is a heedless, reckless pluck about the _______ Terrier which is characteristic, and, coupled with the headlong dash, blind to all consequences, with which he rushes at his adversary, has earned for the breed the proud epithet of 'the Daredevils'."

Answer: Irish Terrier

The Irish Terrier is a very active breed and can be hard to train. It is often descibed as 'racy'. Contrary to popular belief, Irish Terriers do not only come in dark red. Although this is by far the mist popular colour red wheaten and wheaten are also acceptable colours.
4. Head and Skull: "Head like that of an otter moderately broad in skull, with short strong muzzle."

Answer: Border Terrier

The Border Terrier is a 'game' little breed. They are very friendly and often excel in agility, flyball and even obedience. My Border pup is a real wee pet. You can check out my quiz about them in the Terrier section.
5. General Appearance: "Largest of the Terriers, a muscular, active, fairly cobby dog, without suspicion of legginess or undue length of body."

Answer: Airedale Terrier

Often known as 'King of the Terriers'. It is the largest terrier. Although there are other terrier types which are larger - the Dobermann Pinscher, Giant Schnauzer and Black Russian Terrier - these breeds are not used as terriers and are not in the Terrier group.
6. Ears: "Moderately sized, filbert-shaped, set on low, and hanging flat to cheek. Thin and velvety in texture; covered with short fine hair with fringe of whitish silky hair at tip."

Answer: Bedlington Terrier

Bedlington Terriers are often described as looking like lambs. They come in blue, sandy and liver.
In all cases black should not run into tan or vice versa, but division between colours clearly defined."

Answer: Manchester Terrier

One of the oldest of terrier breeds, the Manchester Terrier is now becoming quite rare and is now on the British and Irish Vulnerable Native Breeds list. There were 113 registered in the British Kennel Club in 2007.
8. General Appearance: "Medium-sized with medium-length coat, great strength with impression of maximum substance for the size of dog. Body longer than high."

Answer: Glen of Imaal Terrier

The Glen of Imaal is another Vulnerable Native Breed. There were only 36 registered in Britain in 2007. They originated in County Wicklow, Ireland.
9. Head and Skull: 'Long without being out of proportion to size of dog. Length of skull enabling it to be fairly wide and yet retain narrow appearance. Skull nearly flat and cheek bones not protruding. Foreface strongly constructed and deep throughout. Skull and foreface of equal length. Slight but distinct stop between skull and foreface just in front of eye. Nose large and, in profile, line from nose towards chin appears to slope backwards.'

Answer: Scottish Terrier

Scottish terriers are also known as Aberdeen Terriers. Although black is the breeds most popular colour, Scotties can also be wheaten or brindle.
10. Characteristics: 'Traditionally of indomitable courage and tenacity. Highly intelligent and affectionate especially with children.'

Answer: Staffordshire Bull Terrier

The Staffie is often subject to prejudice as many people assume them to be unreliable and vicious. In fact it is one of only two dogs to have 'good with children' or similar, written in the breed standard. The other is the Rough Collie. Staffies are also the only dog to be called 'totally reliable'.
