Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Cornwall, what supernatural creatures are believed to live in the tin mines and cause all sorts of troubles for miners?

Answer: Knockers

Knockers are creatures that cause trouble to Cornish miners. They move or steal equipment. Miners often remark that they hear the knockers working deep in the mine, hence their name. While they can be mischievous, Knockers can also be very destructive.

When agitated, it has been claimed that they will cause the mines to collapse, either killing or trapping the miners within. Sometimes in order to placate the Knockers, a Cornish miner will leave a piece of a Cornish pastie as a snack. It's a tradition that carries on to this day.
2. St Osyth was a 7th-century East Anglian queen who is said to haunt the St Osyth Priory in modern day Essex. What ritual is reported that her ghost performs to this very day?

Answer: She carries her own head from the chopping block to the village church

It is said that St Osyth was killed by Danish invaders who beheaded her. To the shock of the Danes, she picked up her own head, held it out at arms length, and carried it from the spot of her execution to the door of the church. The legend tells that every year on October 7, her ghost repeats this startling ritual that must have terrified her executioners if it indeed happened.
3. In Tower Green of the Tower of London, a ghost of a noble woman who was sentenced to death but refused to kneel for the executioner is often seen haunting this area. Her specter runs from an unseen executioner who literally hacks her to death as he did in real life. Who is the noblewoman who was killed in such a dreadful fashion?

Answer: Countess Margaret Pole

Margaret Pole, the Countess of Salisbury in 1541, was an unfortunate target of King Henry VIII's revenge. Henry was angry with Cardinal Pole, who vilified Henry as the head of the church. The cardinal was safe from Henry in France, so Henry decided to execute his 72 year old mother instead.

When the countess refused to kneel down for execution, the executioner swung his ax at her. Screaming, the Countess ran for her life as the executioner chased her, striking her with the ax over and over.
4. In Ludlow, Shropshire, the Feathers Hotel is said to be haunted by several ghosts. Which of these is one of these reported ghosts?

Answer: A naked woman in clogs dances in the parking lot and can only be seen by men.

The Feathers Hotel is reported to have many hauntings, and the most bizarre one of the dancing naked woman in clogs. She has been reported only by men, sometimes spotted while men have been in the company of women.

In addition, there is a ghost that walks between three rooms. It begins in room 232, walks through the wall in 233 and disappears in room 211. The man has been reported walking his dog through the wall.

It is said that if you look into wells on the field, the ghosts of dead highlanders will call out to you. What is the name of this battle?

Answer: Battle of Culloden

The Battle of Culloden in 1746 is considered to be the last pitched battle fought on British soil, a pitched battle being when both sides choose a place to fight before the battle. It was also the battle that put an end to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745.

The huge, raised army of Bonnie Prince Charlie attempted to return the Stuart Dynasty to the British throne. His army was completely slaughtered by the Duke of Cumberland, Prince William. Many highlanders fought on both sides, explaining why the battleground ghosts are generally reported as highlanders.

Answer: Balgonie Castle

Balgonie Castle was built in Scotland in the 14th century. It is considered by some to be the most haunted residence in all of Scotland. Green Jeanie is the most well known of the reported spirits who claim the castle as their home. In addition to having "pea green" skin, she has been reported wearing a green hood that covers the majority of her face. Green Jeanie is a rather harmless ghost, not attempting to scare anyone and is not regarded fearfully.
7. The A857 road which runs from Galson to the Port of Ness outside Galson, Scotland, is the location of a singular road ghost sighting. A carrier from Galson was walking along this road alone along a stretch where a peddler was murdered. The carrier experience a very odd haunting. What did the ghost of the peddler do?

Answer: He sat the carrier down and told him his story and then melted away

Ghosts along this road have only been reported twice. This ghost of the peddler who told the story of his murder is the more well known. The carrier apprehensively approached a large stone that he had known was a marker of the area where the peddler had been murdered.

When he reached the stone, the ghost appeared and forced him to sit on the stone while he told his story. The carrier, though terrified, simply sat down and listened to the story. The ghost melted away when the sun came up and the rock disappeared shortly after.
8. A well-known hitchhiker ghost haunts a certain area in London. The most famous recounting of the story is that a motorcyclist picked up a hitchhiker and they rode together through a darkened area. When the light returned, the hitchhiker was gone and the motorcyclist thought he had fallen off. Upon arriving at the address he was taking the hitchhiker to, he found out the hitchhiker had died years before. Where does this haunting take place?

Answer: Blackwall Tunnel

There are several tunnels that run under the river Thames in London. Some have historically been dark and that likely adds to the frightening and somewhat supernatural presence felt by people in the area. Blackwall Tunnel runs under the Thames, connecting the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The hitchhiker ghost is a well known story, but its credibility is questionable as many major traits about the hitchhiker change from story to story, including the sex of the hiker.
9. Two bridges in Dartmoor are the location for what is considered one of the scariest hauntings in all of England. Near Two Bridges, a certain event has been happening for centuries that terrifies travelers and causes accidents. What is this event?

Answer: A pair of hairy hands appears out of nowhere and deflects the direction of the vehicle

The hairy hands of Dartmoor have been reported long before motor vehicles were even conceived. Several horse carriage drivers have reported upon crossing the bridge, that a large pair of hairy hands appeared out of nowhere, grabbed the reigns and directed the carriage off the bridge.

Other reports in the early 20th century came from travelers riding motorbikes who would see the hands appear over their own hands on the steering wheel. Other times, they would wake sleeping passengers, resulting in screams.

In any event, they always seem like they are trying to cause an accident.
10. In 1710 outside the village of Laceby, a mild mannered blacksmith named Solomon Fenner asked for the hand in marriage of an upper class woman, only to be denied by the father. Fenner killed the father by bludgeoning him with his blacksmith hammer. Though remorseful, Fenner was executed, crying that he had done such a terrible deed. What is his ghost known to do?

Answer: He appears out of nowhere with his bloody hammer, telling people not to fear but to know that he is punished for his actions

People who have seen his ghost report being immediately frightened since they are approached by a man with a huge and bloody hammer.

But Solomon's ghost is always weeping and always tells those he visits that he will not harm them. He warns them that he suffers the price for murder and that all human life is sacred.
