Eugene Field was born in 1850 in St. Louis, MO. He started writing poetry at age 9 and continued throughout his lifetime. He never graduated from college, but made a living for his wife and six children working as a journalist for various newspapers. "The Gingham Dog and The Calico Cat" was penned in the late 1800's.

He also wrote "Wynken, Blynken and Nod" and "The Sugar Plum Tree". The house where he was born has been preserved as a museum and is located near the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.
