Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
When "Carry On Sergeant" was released in 1958, there was no plan for it to be part of a long-running series of movies. The title of the movie that, if you'll pardon the pun, carried on through to the rest of the series, was based on a common phrase used in the military when handing over command.
"Sergeant" starred Bob Monkhouse in his only appearance in the series as Charlie, one of a number of new recruits called up to do their national service in the army. The film gently lampooned military life with the recruits representing a cross-section of ill-suited characters from British society.
"Carry on Nurse" (1959) follows the nurses at Haven Hospital as they deal with a variety of troublesome patients; a journalist who is writing articles about the hospital; a boxer with a broken hand; a colonel with a gambling habit; and a lothario who is prepared to be operated on by another patient so he doesn't have to cancel a romantic getaway.
"Carry on Teacher" (1959). A headmaster manages a school through an inspection, whilst planning to take a new job. The pupils try their best to sabotage the headmaster's plans.
"Carry On Constable" (1960). A flu epidemic means that a police station has to take on new officers straight out of training. The new recruits try hard but are not quite up to the task.
"Carry On Cruising" (1962). New cabin crew try to impress their captain aboard a cruise ship with disastrous consequences.
"Carry On Cabby" (1963). A wife starts a taxi company with female-only staff to rival her husband's firm after they have a falling out.
"Carry On Jack" (1964). In the 1800s, clumsy and clueless Midshipman Albert Poop-Decker is unwittingly used by his ship-mates to help mutiny against Captain Fearless. Meanwhile, a young woman stows away dressed as a man.
"Carry On Spying" (1964). Incompetent secret agents make a mess of a mission to retrieve a secret formula from a criminal organization.
"Carry On Cleo" (1964). Two British slaves are exported to Rome where they end up as part of Julius Caesar's personal guard. When Cleopatra and Mark Antony fall in love and plot to assassinate Julius Caesar, the Brits step in to save the day.
"Carry On Doctor" (1967). A series of medical mishaps and romantic mix-ups entangle a hospital's staff and its patients.
"Carry On Up the Khyber" (1968). A local tribe in British India plans a rebellion after discovering a soldier in the feared Devils in Skirts regiment does in fact wear underwear under his kilt.
"Carry On Camping" (1969). Two plumbers book a trip to a nudist camp with their girlfriends, only to discover that it is just a standard campsite, and a not very well-appointed one at that. Things look up though when they discover that girls from a finishing school have booked the same site at the same time.
"Carry On Henry" (1971). A historical parody that tells the story of the extra two wives of King Henry VIII that history had forgotten.
"Carry On Abroad" (1972). A group of British tourists face various calamities on a package holiday to a Spanish resort.
"Carry On England" (1976). An army captain is put in charge of an experimental anti-aircraft battery during WWII. The experiment is that half of the soldiers running the battery are women. The captain tries to keep the men and women apart, whilst the soldiers will do everything to come back together again.
Regular actors in the series included; Kenneth Williams, who appeared in 26 movies from "Carry On Sergeant" (1958) to "Carry On Emmanuelle" (1978); Joan Sims (25 movies); Charles Hawtrey (24 movies); and Sid James, who appeared in 20 movies from "Carry On Constable" (1960) to "Carry On Dick" (1974), in which he played the title role of Dick Turpin.
