Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First on my list today is a nice 'Easy listening' track, 'If You Could Read My Mind', which was the first showing on the Billboard 100 charts for Gordon Lightfoot. In what country was Gordon Lightfoot born?

Answer: Canada

Gordon Lightfoot was born in Ontario in 1938. 'If You Could Read My Mind' was Gordon's first entry into the US charts; it was a number one hit in Canada and on the US 'Easy Listening' chart. It was number five on the Billboard Hot 100 but only reached number 30 in the UK.
Bob Dylan once said that when he heard a Gordon Lightfoot song he wished it would last for ever. High praise indeed.

*Useless Information* Gordon Lightfoot is the holder of the 'Order of Ontario' awarded to Ontario residents for 'Conspicuous achievements in any field' and the 'Companion order of Canada', Canada's Highest civilian award, which he was granted in 2003. He has 16 Juno Awards, has been honoured by the Canadian Post Office by having his image on a stamp... The list goes on.
2. The next recording I chose for my listening pleasure was entitled 'Mama Told Me Not To Come'. Which American rock band had a number one hit with this record in 1970?

Answer: Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night were formed in Los Angeles in 1968. The band split up in 1976, reformed in 1981 with the same line up and are still recording today.
'Mama Told Me Not To Come' was their first US number one and their only UK top 10 hit.

*Useless Information* Three Dog Night had three number one records on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, 'Mama Told Me Not To Come', 'Joy to the World' and 'Black and White'; all three recordings had different lead singers who were the three original members of the band.
3. 'Going Up The Country' was an international hit for which American 'Blues Rock' band in 1968 / 1969?

Answer: Canned Heat

'Going up the Country' was a number 11 Billboard Hot 100 hit and attained a number 19 chart position in the UK in 1968.

Canned Heat were formed in 1965 and have been recording and touring in various guises until the present day. As of today (2012) the line up consists of Larry Taylor, Fito de la Parra, Harvey Mandel and Dale Spalding. Three of these were in the band's most successful line up in the late 1960s.

*Useless Information* Canned Heat took their name from a 1928 song entitled 'Canned Heat Blues' - released by Tommy Johnson. - This song related the story of an alcoholic who turned to drinking Sterno. Sterno is an American brand name for a form of jellied alcohol used for warming food in the home and commonly known as canned heat.
4. On we go to 1970 and an English band called Christie who had a UK number one hit with what coloured river in June of that year?

Answer: Yellow

'Yellow River' was written by Jeff Christie, founder of the band, and reached number one in the UK, number 23 in the US and was a top ten hit in other countries around the world.

*Useless Information* 'Yellow River' was offered to another English group, The Tremeloes. The Tremeloes actually recorded the song and then changed their minds about releasing it. The backing track was offered back to Jeff Christie who recorded his own vocals on to the track.

*Bonus Useless Information* 'Yellow River' only reached number 23 in the US, despite this it was in the Hot 100 charts for 23 weeks, more than any other recording for that year.
5. Why oh Why did I choose to listen to this track? An early seventies British recording, 'Sugar Baby Love' reached number one in the UK and number 37 in the US, for which 'Bubblegum' band?

Answer: The Rubettes

A high pitched 'OOOH AAAAH!' a backing group singing 'Bop Shoo Wop, Bop Shoo Waddy Waddy' (for nearly three minutes) and a spoken verse in the middle of the song. What else is there to say?

Despite that it was a very popular song reaching number one in Australia and many European countries. 'Sugar Baby Love' was the only UK number one the Rubettes ever recorded.

*Useless Information* Written by Wayne Bickerton and Tony Waddington, the song was intended to be put forward as an entry to the Eurovision Song Contest. a 'demo' copy was produced and, when Showaddywaddy turned down an offer to record the song, the demo musicians were offered the chance to release the single, on the condition that they formed a group.
6. A bit of 1970s Glam Rock now. 'Teenage Rampage' was a 1974 number two hit for a band called Fox.

Answer: False

'Teenage Rampage' was a hit for (the) Sweet. To my eternal shame I must admit that this was the first single I ever bought (My only excuse is that I was only 14 at the time).

Better known for their earlier number one hits 'Blockbuster' and 'The Ballroom Blitz', Sweet began their career in 1968 under the name The Sweetshop. As they signed a record deal with the Fontana label another UK group released a single using the name Sweetshop forcing the band to change their name to The Sweet; as they progressed they dropped the 'definite article' from the name becoming Sweet.
7. Next, for my listening pleasure, was an American female singing her first UK number one single 'Can the Can'. Probably better known in America as Fonzie's friend Leather Tuscadero from 'Happy Days', who was she?

Answer: Suzi Quatro

Considering that Suzi Quatro was born in Detroit it is surprising that she was relatively unknown in the US achieving only one top ten hit. Luckily the British appreciated this hard rocking young lady with 13 top 50 hits, of which eight hit the top 20, in eight years 1972 - 1980. 'Can the Can' was her second single release and her first UK number one.

*Useless Information* Suzi was awarded six German 'Bravo Otto' awards for excellence in music between 1973 and 1980. She started performing, as bass guitar player, at the age of 14 with her sisters in a group called The Pleasure Seekers.
8. One of the first bands in the UK to top the charts using a 'Moog' synthesizer as the lead instrument was Chicory Tip. They spent three weeks in the number one spot in early 1972 with 'Son of ___ ___' can you complete the title?

Answer: My Father

Chicory Tip (or just Chicory in the US) formed in 1967 in Maidstone, Kent, UK. and split up in 1975. They had limited chart success with only three top 20 singles in that time. 'Son of My Father' was by far their most successful recording selling over one million copies.

*Useless Information* Allegedly the name 'Chicory Tip' was chosen by Barry Mayger (the Bass guitarist) who saw a bottle of liquid coffee containing chicory (probably 'Camp Coffee'). He suggested the name 'Chicory Tip' to the rest of the band who agreed it.
9. The next song I found started with the lyrics: 'Hey Mr Dream seller, where have you been, tell me have you dreams I can see? I came along, just to bring you this song, Can you spare one dream for me?' The song was 'Meet Me on the Corner'; which band recorded this and took it to number five in the UK charts in 1971?

Answer: Lindisfarne

Named after the island of Lindisfarne off of the coast of England, the band formed in 1968 and are probably best known for their number one UK album (and single) 'Fog on the Tyne'.
10. Finally for this session I clicked on a tune entitled 'The Arms of Mary'. This was a 1976 number five UK hit for The Sutherland Brothers. What was the name of their backing band?

Answer: Quiver

Gavin and Iain Sutherland began recording in 1970. Around 1973 they teamed up with a rock band called Quiver to form The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. 'Arms of Mary' was their highest of three charting hits.

*Useless Information* In 1972 the (then) Sutherland Brothers Band, released a single written by Gavin Sutherland called 'Sailing'. This was not a success until, picked up by Rod Stewart three years later, it became a number one hit for the aforementioned Rod Stewart.
