Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. AMERICAN FOOTBALL- Crowned with a fake chunk of cheese on their hats, these 'cheese heads' are the fans of which NFL team?

Answer: Green Bay Packers

Wisconsin is America's dairyland, and their team the Green Bay Packers have fans who wear hats with a (pretend) chunk of cheese on the top. This is not unique to American football fans. Bears fans wear bear heads, and Minnesota Viking fans wear horns to name just two others.

2. BASKETBALL - Born in Shanghai, who played with the Houston Rockets and was the tallest player in the NBA at seven feet six inches (2.29 m) when he retired in 2011?

Answer: Yao Ming

Yao Ming was born in 1980 in Shanghai, China. At the time his parents were said to be the tallest couple in China. As a teen Ming (Yao is the family name) played with the Shanghai Sharks. Unfortunately he suffered injuries and retired in 2011, but as the richest celebrity in China for several years running, that worked out all right.

3. BASKETBALL - The name of the Toronto Raptors of the NBA was inspired by what movie that came out just before they were established?

The team name was inspired by the raptor dinosaurs that were prominent in "Jurassic Park", a hugely successful movie that came out in 1993. Toronto were admitted to the NBA in 1995 as an expansion team, along with the Vancouver Grizzlies; they were the first Canadian teams admitted to the NBA.

4. BASEBALL - To participate in the World Baseball Classic for a specific country, which of these is a valid connection to be able to represent that country?

Answer: At least one parent was a citizen

Countries like UK and Israel which don't have a vibrant baseball following, have relied on the liberal eligibility rules to choose a player to represent their country. For many players, however, the choice is based on the player's birth country.

5. TENNIS - Novak Djokovic claimed the Number 1 Ranking during 2011, with an emphatic win over Rafael Nadal, in the final of which tournament?

Answer: Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon in 2011 with a 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3 victory over Rafael Nadal. His appearance in the final ensured that, following the tournament, he would take over the Number 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal. Nadal had held the top spot since 7th July 2010.

6. CRICKET - In which city and when was the first Test match played? The opponents were the English team.

Answer: Melbourne 1877

The first officially recognised Test Match was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from 15th to 19th March 1877. Australia defeated England by 45 runs. Amazingly, the centenary test match at the same venue in 1977 yielded exactly the same result, an Australian victory by 45 runs. Charles Bannerman faced the first ball in test cricket in that 1877 match - his score of 165 retired hurt is still the highest score on debut by an Australian batsman.

The Philadelphia cricket club, the oldest in the USA, was founded in 1854.

8. NAME THE SPORT - Fine leg, point and third man are all fielding positions in which sport?

Answer: Cricket

There are nine fielders in a cricket team, in addition to the bowler and wicket keeper. Fielding positions are not fixed and are adjusted frequently for tactical advantage. Many regular fielding positions are named according to the angle and distance from the batsman.

The adjective "silly" in a fielding position means very close to the batsman--perhaps too close if you want to avoid being hit hard by the ball in flight.

9. NAME THE SPORT - The "penholder" and "shakehands" grips are used in which sport?

Answer: Table tennis

The penholder grip has the advantage of putting a lot of spin on the serve. As the name implies, the paddle is held like you would grip a pen. The shakehands grip is popular with players who rotate forehand and backhand return shots. The paddle is grasped as if shaking hands.

The shakehands grip is used more with European and American players, while the penholder grip was made popular with Japanese table tennis professionals.
