VALIS stands for Vast Active Living Intelligence System, and the book of the same name is book one in a trilogy. As all books seen are hints about the nature of the series and its mysteries, this book may hint at the supernatural aspects that inhabit the island.

"My name is John Locke, and I'm responsible for the well-being of this island." Locke forces Miles to open his mouth and bite down on a grenade in an attempt to gather information from Miles. Locke says that Miles will tell him everything that he needs to know and leaves.

As a result of Kate's mother declining to testify against Kate, Melissa defers to Duncan. There will be no additional jail time for Kate. She will also be on probation for ten years and she must remain in the state.
