Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Leg 1, in Buenos Aires, if teams didn't complete the 'National Dance' task for their Detour, they could instead completed which alternative task?

Answer: 'National Sandwich'

An early choice between two tasks awaited teams as they passed through Buenos Aires, and this involved either dancing or cooking. In 'National Dance', racers had to learn the Argentine tango from instructors at the Casal de Catalunya theatre, but in 'National Sandwich', they joined the staff working the stalls at Plaza Dorrego.

Here, they had to put their serving skills to the test by making twenty-four choripánes, asado sandwiches consisting of chorizo, chimichurri, salsa, and bread. Six teams attempted the sandwich task while five went for the dance (and one team, Luke and Julie, took a penalty instead of completing the tango, resulting in their elimination).
2. Racers who elected to complete the 'Strong Stomach' Detour option in Salta, Argentina had to eat which of these parts of a cow?

Answer: Head

Racers had to join the gauchos outside of Salta, Argentina in Leg 2 for one of two Detour choices, and while some teams chose the 'Soft Touch' Detour to collect goats milk straight from the source, others were stuck dining on local cuisine, specifically cabeza guateada (or roasted cow head, including eyes, tongue, and cheeks). Only when they finished all the provided meat could they get their next clue and keep on racing.

Because this was a limited station Detour, several teams were stuck eating. Bam Bam and Logan, Billy and Oscar, Pete and Bridget, Havana and Steph, and Jett and Lily took their seats while Jett and Lily elected to take a one hour penalty, leaving the challenge incompleted.
3. Teams completing the Detour in Purmamarca, Argentina in Leg 3 could wither 'Walk' or 'Dress Like' which regional civilization?

Answer: An Incan

Racers headed to the far northwest of Argentina for their third leg and it had them situated along the Inca Trail for the bulk of their tasks, sending them to high altitudes and rugged mountain landscapes. The Detour was themed around this, forcing teams to select either 'Walk Like an Incan' or 'Dress Like an Incan'.

While the 'Walk' Detour had teams scaling and descending a mountain trail on foot, the 'Dress' option sent them to the market to properly adorn an ekeko statue to get their next clue. Five teams completed the latter task; four finished the walk.
4. Both the 'Healer' and 'Styler' Detour options, which were encountered by teams in Johannesburg in Leg 4, were completed by equal numbers of teams.

Answer: True

Racing into South Africa in Leg 4, racers had to deal with the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg, selecting a task to take them into the old ways of Africa or the new, cosmopolitan side of the city. In 'Healer', teams went old school heading to a traditional market to set up a stall for a nganga while in 'Styler', teams joined a local fashion house to make their own dashikis and tote bags. Most of the teams from the first train into the city took the 'Healer' task while most of the teams in the back went with 'Styler'.
5. After completing the Detour in Magaliesburg, South Africa (in Leg 6), teams were treated to which of these?

Answer: A safari tour

In Leg 6, racers headed out into the South African countryside to join locals in cultural activities. Arriving in Magaliesburg, teams could select either 'High Kick' or 'Paint Slick'. In the former task, racers learned a Zulu warrior dance with a group of locals, executing the moves to perfection with a local tribe leader.

In the latter, teams got out the paints to decorate a clay ukhamba with a provided traditional pattern. Most teams completed the painting task, opting for the slow and steady, less physical option.
6. If teams didn't go off-roading in the Namib Desert for their Detour in Leg 7, they could instead find their clue by reaching the bottom of a dune. How would they get there?

Answer: By surfing down it

Racers visited the tallest dune in Namibia, Dune 7 in Dorob National Park, to start their seventh leg of the race, and there they had to select one of two Detour options with limited spaces. The earliest teams chose the 'Four By Four' option, allowing them to drive a 12km course through the sand dunes, but the remaining three were tasked with taking a gruelling hike up Dune 7 to sandboard from the top to the basin of Peter's Pan.
7. One of the Detour tasks encountered by teams in Swakopmund, Namibia in Leg 8 pertained to which of these cultures, who notably colonized the region?

Answer: German

Racers, if they so chose, were able to embark on the 'German Feast' Detour task in Leg 8 and it had them taking a seat at a Namibian restaurant serving German cuisine to stomach four kilograms of schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and sauerkraut to get their next clue.

The alternative, 'Herero Style', had teams learning how to pin and form a complicated traditional headdress. The majority of teams (specifically the all-male teams) completed the 'German Feast'...though not without difficulty.
8. Racers who chose to 'Raise It' for their Detour in Leg 10 had to navigate through shops in which of these unique locations?

Answer: Floating village

Racers headed to the south of Thailand in Leg 10 and travelled through the unique coastline found north of Phuket, stopping off at the floating village of Koh Panyi for their Detour task, a choice between 'Raise It' and 'Kick It' (both of which were completed by an equal number of teams). 'Raise It' had teams searching the shops of the village for flags and bamboo poles before delivering them and setting them up at a local restaurant while 'Kick It' had teams completing soccer drills on the floating field at the edge of town.
9. Teams completed the race's final Detour in which Thai city?

Answer: Phuket

The penultimate leg of the race held the teams' last Detour, and it was a choice between 'Fame' and 'Frame', both of which too teams deep into Phuket's Old Town, and both of which had limited stations for participants. Brooke and Adam and Bam Bam and Logan were first to choose, and they took the spots at 'Frame', which had them searching along Thalang Road to match photos to unique building facades. Billy and Oscar and Pete and Bridget joined a local cabaret for 'Fame', reconstructing a dancer's lavish costume to get their final clue.
10. How many twelve legs of "The Amazing Race Australia 8" featured a Detour?

Answer: 11

The only leg of the race that did not see teams selecting one of two tasks for a Detour was the final leg wherein teams raced from one Route Info clue to the next en route to the Finish Line in Bangkok. Notably, this season did not feature any U-Turns of any sort, however racers were confronted with a new rule that remained unspoken on the broadcast of the show.

This year, when a team selected a Detour option, they could not switch to another; they either had to remain at their existing Detour to finish it, or they had to take a penalty.

This resulted in the notable penalties in the first two legs of the race.
