Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Racers were flown to Namibia to start Leg 7. In which city did they commence the leg?

Answer: Walvis Bay

Racers were taken from Johannesburg, South Africa to the bordering nation of Namibia for their next trio of race legs, and the six teams still competing were let out from the airport in Walvis Bay at the start of Leg 7 in the order they arrived at the previous Pit Stop. From here, racers located their vehicles and their first clue for the leg, sending them straight into the Namib Desert. Driving themselves to Dorob National Park, racers had to find Dune 7 to locate their Detour.
2. Leg 7 had a limited station Detour in Dorob National Park. How many teams were able to complete either side?

Answer: Three

After reaching the side of Dune 7, racers had to choose (quickly) between 'Two By Two' and 'Four By Four' since both of them had space for a maximum of three teams. 'Two By Two' had teams climbing up along the top of Dune 7, Namibia's tallest dune, so that they could sandboard to the bottom in Peter's while 'Four By Four' allowed them to stay in their vehicles to drive through Snake Bed Pan, staying on a 12km course through the dunes.

Chloe and Emily, Brooke and Adam, and Billy and Oscar all arrived first and all chose the latter task, leaving the last three teams to take the gruelling hike.
3. At Pelican Point, in Leg 7, racers had to kayak into the waters of Walvis Bay, doing so through a colony of which of the following?

Answer: Fur seals

When racers got through the Detour tasks, they were given a clue that sent them, via private driver, across the salt flats to Pelican Point on the Namibian coast in Walvis Bay. There, teams needed to hop into two-man kayaks and paddle out into the bay's fur seal colony. After navigating through the cape fur seals, they had to locate four buoys in the Atlantic, each outlining different seal facts, and relay the answer to a question to a guide back on the shore.

The only question: 'What was on the border of the information board of the buoys'.
The answer was 'Friends of the Seal'.
4. For their Road Block in Leg 7, racers had to make otjize, a traditional sunscreen that would appear in what colour?

Answer: Red

Finishing the seal task, racers ripped open their Road Block clue, this one asking 'who wants a traditional spa treatment?' For this task, attempted by Chloe, Adam, Pete, Thorpie, Bam Bam, and Billy, racers returned to Walvis Bay and drove to the coastal town of Mondesa to create local sunscreen. Joining members of Namibia's last nomadic tribe, the Himba, racers created otjize, a mix of animal fat and red ochre that they would need to apply to their forearms and faces. Once covered, they would receive their next clue.
5. Although it was at a 'keep on racing' Pit Stop, which of these teams was eliminated at the end of Leg 7 in Dorob National Park?

Answer: Chloe and Emily

Finishing their Road Block, teams needed to drive to the E.S.M. Trading Fashion Shop in Swakopmund for one final task, this time taking a shopping list and purchasing four items of clothing written, for them, in the local Damara Nama language. If they could get the four proper articles (a hat, jacket, shirt, and sleepwear in proper colours), they could proceed to the seventh Pit Stop of the race back in Dorob National Park at Tumas Pan.

It was there that Bam Bam and Logan reclaimed their first place position, winning their third leg of the race thus far. They, along with the other teams checking in, were informed that they would race directly into their eighth leg, receiving a clue. This being said, Chloe and Emily checked in last, having needed to return to an earlier task to collect one of their bags. They were shocked to be eliminated in sixth place despite the keep-on-racing leg.
6. Arriving on the Skeleton Coast in Leg 8, racers had to set up a market stall for which of these?

Answer: Crystals

Heading straight out from the Tumas Pan, racers had to drive themselves up along the Skeleton Coast to the Vierkant Klip Area. There, teams would meet the local crystal sellers and join them by creating a merchant stall, replicating the existing example in both construction and merchandise. If they could properly lash together the rudimentary components and get the hang of the sales tables, they could get their next clue.
7. On the Main Beach in Leg 8, racers had to dig beneath the skeleton of which of these?

Answer: Whale

Finishing their crystal hut, racers needed to head into the coastal town of Swakopmund and use a provided poem to locate their next clue:

"Where the ocean leviathan leaves its mark. Beneath broken spine lie treasures in dark."

If teams could decipher this they'd locate the city's main beach where they could search amongst the hundreds of whale bones there for a piece of whale spine. Digging deep beneath it would help them find a bottle with a message inside, and that would be their next clue.
8. How many teams completed the 'Herero Style' Detour task in Swakopmund, Namibia (in Leg 8)?

Answer: Two

After the whale dig, racers travelled on foot to the Swakopmund Mole to locate their Detour clue for this eighth leg of the race, and both of their options were inspired by German influence in this part of the world. For 'Herero Style', racers had to dive into culture and fashion, travelling to the Artists' Arcade to learn how to fold a traditional headdress meant to mimic bull horns using fabric and pins. Once it was crafted properly they would get their next clue.

Brooke and Adam and Pete and Bridget chose to join the fold.
9. What kind of meat did teams dine on if they completed the 'German Feast' Detour task in Leg 8?

Answer: Pork

Racers who wanted to grab a meal for their Detour could visit Swakopmund's Altstadt Restaurant if they so chose, and this allowed them to be seated for a traditional meal of schweinshaxe and sauerkraut. What teams didn't know was that their plates would be overflowing with four kilograms of the traditional meal (composed, mainly, of pork knuckle). If both team members could finish the plate, they could keep racing.

Billy and Oscar, Bam Bam and Logan, and Thorpie and Christian bit off more than they could chew.
10. Which team was last to land on the Pit Stop mat at the end of Leg 8?

Answer: Thorpie and Christian

As soon as racers completed their Detours, they received one last clue sending them on foot to the Swakopmund Jetty to find Beau and the race's eighth Pit Stop. As the sun set on the day, Pete and Bridget were able to slip ahead in the final task and land on the mat to claim their first win of the race. For their success, Beau granted them an upgraded stay for the Pit Stop.

Thorpie and Christian, who were relegated at the back of the pack due to Thorpie's injured knees, landed on the mat at the end and were informed, after the double-length leg, that they would be spared from elimination. They would, however, face a Speed Bump in Leg 9.
