Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of Leg 5, racers had to construct which of these for their Road Block?

Answer: Bicycle

Starting the fifth leg of the race in Sandton in the north of Johannesburg, South Africa, teams needed to head out from their hotel and proceed by taxi to Lebo's Backpackers in Soweto to find their next clue. There, racers had to open the clue box, rip open their envelopes, and choose one team member to participate in the Road Block. For this challenge, the selected racers (Bam Bam, Steph, Emily, Adam, Oscar, Pete, and Christian) needed to take it up a gear by assembling a bike without any assistance.
2. After visiting the Nelson Mandela House in Leg 5, racers played which instrument with local schoolchildren?

Answer: Drums

Racing out from Lebo's Backpackers on the new bikes, racers were told to proceed to Nelson Mandela's former house in Soweto. There, racers opened their clues to find that they would need to make their way, on foot, to the Umbuyisa School of Arts and Culture.

The clue was simple: spend time with the local schoolchildren of Soweto and learn with them. If racers could play the drums and sing with the kids, they would be able to get their next clue and keep racing.
3. For the 'Burgers' Detour option in Leg 5, did teams need to eat the burgers?

Answer: No

Racers received their Detour clues at the Umbuyisa School, and opening it up they were given a choice of 'Burgers' and 'Beers'. 'Burgers' had teams looking for details as they proceeded to the Onions&All Take-Away Restaurant to serve local kota burgers, street food consisting of mince, cheese, and fried potatoes on a bun. Teams had to take six orders (from memory) from waiting patrons, then cook and serve the orders completely to get their next clue.

Brooke and Adam, Havana and Steph, and Billy and Oscar took orders.
4. For the 'Beers' Detour task in Soweto, racers needed to deliver beer to a party. They were able to use which of these?

Answer: Wheelbarrows

Racers who didn't want to complete 'Burgers' could instead get their hands dirty with 'Beers' for their Detour. Heading to a local shebeen known as Polar's Place, racers had to grab provided wheelbarrows and transport a local beer known as Umqombothi. Once racers delivered a total of thirty litres to a party at 6362 Mashane Street, two kilometres away from their starting point, they could get their next clue from the party host.

Bam Bam and Logan, Thorpie and Christian, Pete and Bridget, and Chloe and Emily made the delivery.
5. Which team was last to check in at the Pit Stop in Soweto in Leg 5?

Answer: Pete and Bridget

As teams left their Detours they were instructed to grab a taxi and check in with Beau at the mat waiting for them at Soweto Theatre. There, Brooke and Adam managed to slip into a first place win (their first) though Beau told them, and the other teams, to keep on racing, handing them another clue and pushing them into Leg 6.

Pete and Bridget, who took a thirty minute penalty for not completing the bike-building Road Block, dropped from fourth to last during their wait here but were, likewise, told to keep on racing. They had only two minutes left to wait before the final team arrived at the mat.
6. Which team completed the 'High Kick' Detour task, performing the Zulu dance in Leg 6?

Answer: Bam Bam and Logan

Racers departed from Soweto altogether when they kept on racing into their sixth leg, and they told their taxis to take them to Mpandlane Village in Magaliesburg, a rural area northwest of Johannesburg. There, racers found a Detour waiting for them. The 'High Kick' option, completed by Brooke and Adam, Bam Bam and Logan, and Havana and Steph, had teams joining tribal warriors to learn a traditional Zulu dance. If they could perform it for the tribe leader, they could get their next clue.
7. Teams completing the 'Paint Slick' Detour task in Mpandlane Village had to paint which of these?

Answer: A clay pot

Racers who did not complete 'High Kick' instead finished 'Paint Slick', a task testing their proficiency in a different art altogether. Joining local craftspeople, racers had to memorize a Ndebele pattern, replicating a traditional design. Then, they had to use paint to decorate a drinking pot, known as a ukhamba, in that design. Completing the paint job would give them their next clue. Chloe and Emily, Thorpie and Christian, Billy and Oscar, and Pete and Bridget completed this task.
8. One team was required to complete a Speed Bump in Leg 6. This meant cleaning out which of these before continuing to race?

Answer: A fire pit

Once racers finished the Detour they were told to proceed, by cab, to the Warthogs Bush Lodge to put their name on a sign-up board, securing a spot on one of two surprise safari rides through the nearby Plumari Private Reserve. Racers could make themselves at home at the lodge (where they'd be staying the night) and enjoy the relaxing ride through the wild with the knowledge that the next day would bring the remainder of the leg.

All other teams headed off first-thing in the morning (in the order they arrived), but Pete and Bridget, for placing last in the previous leg, needed to complete a Speed Bump, cleaning out a fire pit from the previous night and restocking the wood for it. Once this was done they could rejoin the course.
9. At an archaeological dig in Leg 6, Road Blocked racers had to dig around for which of these items?

Answer: Teeth

When teams woke up the morning after their safaris, they opened clues that would force them to complete a Road Block, and for this one, they had to go digging in the Plumari Private Reserve for a winning smile. Steph, Logan, Brooke, Chloe, Christian, Oscar, and Bridget were selected to join an archaeological dig, sifting through a sectioned-off part of the Cradle of Humankind until they found twenty-eight teeth-- enough for a mouthful.

They could trade their smile for their final clue of the leg.
10. Which team was eliminated in Krugersdorp, South Africa at the end of the race's sixth leg?

Answer: Havana and Steph

Once teams completed the Road Block they were sent deeper into the Cradle of Humankind, tasked with self-driving to the Nirox Sculpture Park in Krugersdorp to find Beau and the pit Stop mat (sitting in front of a large set of teeth). Brooke and Adam, who breezed through the early Road Block, landed on the mat first for a second leg in a row, this time winning a luxury stay at the next Pit Stop.

Although Havana and Steph started the day in first, a slow go at the Road Block ultimately dropped them from first to last. When they stepped on the mat at this halfway point in the race, Beau eliminated them in seventh position overall.
