Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What long-time enemy is the Doctor fighting in "Nightmare in Silver"?

Answer: Cybermen

"Nightmare in Silver" marks the 15th time the Doctor has encountered the Cybermen. "The Tenth Planet" (1966), which was William Hartnell's last episode as the Doctor, was the first appearance of the Cybermen. They come from the planet Mondas, where they converted themselves into cybernetic beings.

The Cybermen have continually evolved over the course of the series. In this episode, they are much faster and can adapt much more quickly. The title could be a reference to "Silver Nemesis", which featured the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy).
2. What are the names of the children that Clara is the nanny for?

Answer: Angie and Artie

Angie and Artie Maitland are Clara's charges. They are in the TARDIS because they blackmail Clara into it after learning the secret about her traveling with the Doctor. They are played by Eve de Leon Allen (Angie) and Kassius Carey Johnson (Artie). While most reviews of the episode were positive, reviews of the child actors were less generous.
Lily and Cyril are the children from the 2011 Christmas Special, "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe". Josh and Ella are Donna's imaginary children from "Forest of the Dead".
3. Where does most of "Nightmare in Silver" take place?

Answer: Amusement park

The Doctor, Clara and the kids find themselves at Hedgewick's Amusement Park - naturally, it is a few years after the park has closed down. Much of the episode takes place inside Natty Longshore's Comical Castle, which has a moat and drawbridge.
4. What does the background of the "Space Zoomer" ride look like?

Answer: The Moon

The Space Zoomer, an anti-gravity ride, appears to be set on Earth's moon. There is even an American flag. Mars is the home of the Ice Warriors, and Mondas is the home planet of the Cybermen. Metebelis 3, a favorite of the Third Doctor, is blue. The moon setting may be a nod to "The Moonbase" (1967) which was a Cyberman adventure with the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton).
5. What is the name of the small man who the Doctor discovers in the chess machine?

Answer: Porridge

Porridge is played by Warwick Davis. The 3 foot, 6 inch actor is huge in science fiction and fantasy circles: He is Wicket the Ewok in "Return of the Jedi", Professor Flitwick in several Harry Potter films and the title character in the "Leprechaun" series. Davis plays a man who is trying to flee his responsibilities.

It turns out he is an Emperor, and his empire encompasses hundreds of planets. He is hiding out after having to destroy an entire galaxy to rid the universe of the Cybermen. In the end, Porridge destroys the amusement park planet, killing three million Cybermen.
6. What does the Doctor use to hinder his enemy in "Nightmare in Silver"?

Answer: Gold

The Cybermen are revealed to be averse to gold in "Revenge of the Cybermen" (1975), in which they attempt to destroy a planet made of gold. In this episode, the gold interferes with the neural circuitry of the Cyberplanner. In past episodes, gold is shown to clog the respiratory systems of Cybermen. Cleaning fluid is also a weakness of the Cybermen in past episodes.
Vinegar is lethal to Raxacoricofallapatorians, because they are made of calcium.
7. What game does the Doctor play in a challenge for control of his brain?

Answer: Chess

The Doctor plays chess against the Cyberplanner. He reminds his opponent that Time Lords invented chess. This is not the first time the Doctor has played chess. He played with electrified pieces in "The Wedding of River Song" (2011). The Seventh Doctor also plays a critical game of chess in "The Curse of Fenric" (1989).
8. What is the nickname the Doctor's opponent chose for himself?

Answer: Mister Clever

The Cyberplanner settles on "Mister Clever" because the Doctor is very clever. "Megamind" is a Dreamworks film from 2010. Braniac is an android nemesis of Superman. Mister Fantastic is the alter-ego of Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four. Richards is also a scientific genius.

The Cyberplanner does have the Doctor say "Fantastic" to mimic the Ninth Doctor. Matt Smith is absolutely brilliant both as the Doctor and Mister Clever.
9. What is NOT one of the things the Doctor criticizes Clara about?

Answer: Bad hair

The Doctor states, "You're too short and bossy and your nose is all funny." He mentions nothing about Clara's hair. The Emperor/Porridge finds Clara beautiful and brilliant, and actually proposes marriage. Clara turns him down. "When someone asks you to be queen of the universe, you say yes," argues Angie.
10. Who wrote "Nightmare in Silver," the penultimate episode of "Doctor Who's" seventh season?

Answer: Neil Gaiman

This was Gaiman's second episode for "Doctor Who". His first, "The Doctor's Wife", won both a Ray Bradbury Award and a Hugo Award. Gaiman is a prolific writer, and one of Britain's most popular children's authors. Wolfenden was the director of "Nightmare in Silver". Aidan Cook once again takes up the monster duties, playing a Cyberman.

He has been the go-to guy for playing monsters in season seven. Moffat has been the Executive Producer of "Doctor Who" since 2009. He has written episodes during the first seven seasons of the revived series. All during season 7B, there have been references to past doctors.

This one had nods to the second, seventh, ninth and tenth Doctors, as well as a montage of all the doctors.
