Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening montage showed Clara meeting the Doctors all along his time lines. Which of the following is not part of that montage?

Answer: The Tenth Doctor fighting Daleks

The Tenth Doctor is seen in this episode, in a scene from "Silence in the Library." The episode is filled with both past footage and past audio of previous incarnations of the Doctor. The opening montage features the first seven Doctors and ends with Matt Smith in "The Snowmen."
2. What is Clara attempting to make in the kitchen?

Answer: Souffle

Clara is trying to be "souffle girl." This is not the first time she has tried to make a souffle. She was making one in "Asylum of the Daleks" to celebrate her Mother's birthday.
Souffles are made with egg yolks and whites, and can be either savory or sweet. Yorkshire Pudding is a batter pudding usually served with meat. In "The Power of Three" the Doctor claims to have invented Yorkshire Pudding. Parkin is oatmeal and treacle cake from Yorkshire. Zabaglione is an Italian dessert made with egg yolks and sugar.
And remember, "The souffle isn't the souffle. The souffle is the recipe."
3. What city is Strax in when we see him brawling?

Answer: Glasgow

The episode sees the return of the Paternoster Gang: Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax. When they are kidnapped, the Doctor goes to rescue them. Strax has some great lines in "Name of the Doctor" and most of the best laugh lines. Strax apologizes to his Scottish companion for not being able to kill him, and then has the Scot hit him over the head with a shovel.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland. In 1893, it was one of the most important cities in the British Empire, a major shipping center. Edinburgh is second, Aberdeen is third and Paisley is fifth.
4. As Madame, Vastra and Jenny sip tea during the "conference call" they are listening to music by what classical composer?

Answer: Vivaldi

Specifically "Spring" from "The Four Seasons", the Doctor knows Bach, as the Sixth Doctor played "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor" in "Attack of the Cybermen," during the era when the TARDIS became an organ. Mozart has been a recurring character in "Doctor Who" prose and audio stories. In "The Lazarus Experiment" the Tenth Doctor claims that Beethoven taught him to play the pipe organ.
5. When Jenny Flint asks River how she manifested the champagne, what is River's one word answer?

Answer: Disgracefully

"Disgracefully." Alex Kingston returns as River, and is fantastic. Everything you love about River is in this episode. Since it is a trans-temporal call between people in several dimensions, creating a champagne flute out of thin air really doesn't seem like that big a trick.
6. What is the Doctor wearing when we first see him at the Maitland house?

Answer: A blindfold

The Doctor is blindfolded. Artie and Angie have convinced him to play "Blind Man's Bluff" so they could sneak off to the movies. For being the smartest person in the universe, there are times when the Doctor can be quite obtuse. No fezzes or Stetsons in this episode, and definitely no neckties. The Eleventh Doctor wears a bowtie; bowties are cool.
7. What does the Doctor turn off to get the TARDIS to Trenzalore?

Answer: The anti-gravity field

The TARDIS realizes where the Doctor is trying to go and fights him. It shuts down, and hovers over the planet of Trenzalore. The Doctor turns off the anti-gravity device, and the TARDIS goes plummeting to the surface. So when Dorian Maldovar speaks of "The Fall of the Eleventh" it isn't a date, it is literally the 11th Doctor falling. Steven Moffat loves using sentences that have multiple meanings in his episodes.
8. What is "the one place the Doctor must never, ever go"?

Answer: His grave

In "Name of the Doctor" the prophecy by Dorian Maldovar made in "The Wedding of River Song" becomes true. The Doctor is forced to go to Trenzalore, the site of his grave - an enormous TARDIS which is expanding as it dies. Upon entering the tomb, they discover an energy vortex, which allows both the Great Intelligence and Clara to travel to every moment of the Doctor's life.
9. Whose grave does the Doctor stumble across on Trenzalore?

Answer: River Song

He finds the grave of River, which turns out to be the secret entrance to a series of catacombs. It is when he discovers the grave that the Doctor identifies River as "my wife." Amy's grave is in New York City. The fate of Susan remains a mystery, she could have died on Gallifrey or been on a future Earth. Sara Jane, companion of the Third and Fourth Doctors, was on her own spinoff, "The Sarah Jane Adventures" (2007-2011). Arguably the most popular companion of all time, Sara Jane was played by Elisabeth Sladen, who died in April 2011.
10. Who actually speaks the name of the Doctor to open his tomb?

Answer: River Song

It is River who says the name of the Doctor, although viewers do not actually hear it. It was established in "Silence in the Library" that River knew the Doctor's real name. During the meeting with the Paternoster Gang, River states that she does know it, and that it took a great deal of persuading to get him to reveal his name. Just for the record, the Great Intelligence asks "Doctor Who" three times, mirroring Dorian Maldovar and Clara.
11. What is the name of the villainous henchmen in "The Name of the Doctor?"

Answer: The Whispermen

A psychotic murderer, Clarence DeMarco, names them as The Whispermen. The Silence featured heavily in season six and the prophecy of Dorian Maldovar, but were nowhere to be seen in the season finale. Unless the silence Dorian was speaking of was the silence of the Doctor, his refusal to answer. The Whispermen are working for the Great Intelligence, who appears in the form of Doctor Simeon (Richard E Grant).
The Gentlemen were similar ghouls from the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episode "Hush," They had the power to steal people's voices. "The Whisperer" was a radio crime drama in 1951.
12. When the Great Intelligence calls the Doctor "bloodsoaked", what is not one of the people he mentions?

Answer: The Jagrafess

The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe appear in "The Long Game." It is a giant monster controlling humanity through news television. The Ninth Doctor kills it by shutting of the air conditioning.
In "The Christmas Invasion," the Tenth Doctor kills the Sycorax Leader with a satsuma, a small orange. The Eleventh Doctor kills Solomon the Trader in "Dinoasurs on a Spaceship" with missiles. And, so many versions of the Doctor have killed so many Daleks over the years it is hard to keep count.
13. What is the last word River says to the Doctor?

Answer: Sweetie

"Goodbye, Sweetie." She did say "spoilers" right before that. "Run" may be the single most commonly used word in "Doctor Who" history, other than "Doctor" itself. The working title for "Forest of the Dead" actually was "River's Run"
For most of the episode, it seemed that River was simply a mental projection of Clara. Yet after Clara died, the Doctor made physical contact with River, including a spectacular kiss.
14. What does the Doctor send to Clara to rescue her?

Answer: A leaf

The Doctor sends Clara the maple leaf we saw in "Bells of Saint Johns" and "Rings of Akhaten." He manages to save Clara by steeping into his own time stream, which can't possibly be good. Jammy Dodgers are cookies. Clara did receive a candle from Madame Vastra.
15. In the final reveal, what distinguished British actor is named as "The Doctor"?

Answer: John Hurt

John Hurt is revealed to be an incarnation of the Doctor. Speculation is that he is a past incarnation, as he told the Eleventh Doctor "What I did, I had no choice" and Matt Smith states "I know." The Eleventh Doctor could not possibly know what motivated the actions of a future self, so it is possible Hurt is who he became between the Eighth Doctor and the Ninth Doctor - the person responsible for destroying Gallifrey in the Time War. Which would make Matt Smith the twelfth regeneration. John Hurt began acting in the early 1960s on British television.

He has appeared in numerous films and television shows, including "Alien" (1979), Winston Smith in "1984" (1984) and Chancellor Sutler in "V for Vendetta" (2005).
